- Bali gusto kong gumawa ng series of kwentuhan na sumasagot sa mga tanong na “Paano mo ginawa yon?” “Paano mo naisip yon” and etc.
Curious lang ako kung paano tumakbo ang isip ng isang artist sa mga bagay na magaling sila.
Last week before namin ni-record ni miyuki ang cover namin ng Cry Baby, pinag usapan namin kung paano nya tinranslate ang kantang "Kahit Ayaw Mo Na" by This Band.

Curious lang po ako, did you have to be N2/N1 level before you attempted translating/adapting the song to Japanese? And were there moments/lines ba na gumamit kayo ng Google translate to help guide/give idea sa translation or purely from your head lang (with help sa from dictionary)?

Bigay na rin ako ng background sa tanong ko. right now kasi N4 ako. Nung nakuha ko yan nung 2016, hindi ko tinuloy na iimprove Japanese ko, pero ngayon I'm trying to improve again para hopefully maging N2/N1 soon (maybe by Dec this year?)
Minsan, pag gumagawa ako ng covers, naglalagay ako ng lyrics sa video, in Romaji, Kanji and English... pero minsan mapapansin ko na parang hindi tama/walang sense yung English translation based sa kung paano ko nagegets yung Japanese, or worse, walang available na English translation online. So minsan, dahil nga hindi pa naman ako super duper fluent sa Japanese, chinecheck ko rin sa Google Translate and dictionary.
In a way, kahit na minsan feeling ko hindi naman sya pinapansin ng mga nakikinig ng cover ko, ginagawa ko pa rin sya kasi it helps me learn Japanese more na rin.

To answer your question, it's a given that you understand the language of the song you want to translate (Filipino), but I believe it's more important to have a good grasp of the language you're translating/adapting the song in to (Japanese) to do it well. Of course, the higher the level of your understanding/proficiency, the better. I took N1 years ago but tbh I'm still not 100% confident if I did justice to the song I've translated/adapted😅 (sometimes i think it's bec i'm not a native speaker but i also think its just my excuse bec i lack serious studying…💦)
I write the translations/translyrics on my own but I also get occasional help from google (search function) to check words if I used it in the correct context by looking up its synonyms or sample sentences in japanese. Google translate can be used as reference but I definitely do not suggest relying on it most esp. if you're trying to translate a song, a piece of art that is so delicate as you need to interpret its message, emotions, context and artistry in it as much as you can.
There may be some translators who makes mistakes in translating but there are also those who understand the language/song deeply that they cannot interpret it well in the language they're trying to translate it to (as I mentioned in the video, I truly believe there are limitations in translating as sometimes you can't just summarize it in a word or two🥲). Because of that, they try rephrase it in order deliver the exact (or close) meaning of the lyrics.
Doing your own research, trying to look up meanings of the lyrics in english can definitely help in learning! But I also suggest looking up the definition and sample sentences of the words/expressions in japanese too. Also, reading a lot (may it be manga/novels) would certainly help you a lot as well!
The original song lyrics is absolutely not mine and the effort I put into translating/adapting may not be comparable to the artists who create from total nothing but I still consider it as a form of art as well. Yung hard work and time na nilalaan ko for it is di din biro, halata naman ata na sa sobrang passionate ko about this napahaba ang aking reply.🤣🤣
