Above all China is pragmatic. Russia is a declining power, thus China has no reason to bail Russia out, when China itself is more economically entangled with the EU and the US. China has a lot of debt to deal with and it would be insanity to help Russia out.

actually why doesnt China help out Russia?i mean China can make a stand and come out and say they are doing trade with Russia purely out of business and economic interests and has nothing to do with the war or current political situation, and pouring billions into Russia because they are interested in opening up more investment opportunities in Russia....and if USA continue sticking to their narrative of trying to make Russia a global pariah,China can say USA has gone mad and is the global pariah and dictator who decides what is right or wrong.....after all who appointed america as the judge and the redeemer of the world?and not only that accuse her of overstepping her boundaries and throwing her economic weight and might around especially against another superpower by imposing such grave and undue economic sanctions and blockades and freezing of her assets worldwide which tantamounts to a declaration of war as u are not only threathening their livelihoods and security but putting millions at risk.....and this is none of ur business.u are undermining the trust and stability of global financial systems.why should the 3 to 4 billion people in middle east, china and ex ussr and all the countries US invaded in the past trust ur garbage when u can literally turn those systems around and use it as a weapon against anyone whom u did is a political or economic enemy?
and not only that call america out for her blatant hypocrisy and ask why did none of nato or UN countries sanctioned or declare a economic blackout or boycott of american companies and services for all her wars and invasions?
this may be a proxy war,but China does not necessarily have to participate in it directly.....just 5 percent of China's economic might behind Russia would
dont worry Russia we are behind u all the way!!!!!!!!the truth will prevail!!!!and may the hypocrites will burn in hell!!!!!

In some ways China and Russia seem natural allies, but in other ways they don’t. China prizes international stability. Putin is arguably the greatest source of international instability. Fair point, but I think it's important to also remember what happened during the Cold War. While the communist countries were on allies at least on paper, they were never as close to each other as the western nations were.
Whether Xi and Putin view each other the same way today as the nations did back then is up for debate, but I can guarantee you Xi is not happy to have such a larger, dangerous, and noisy neighbor, not to mention one who doesn't respect property lines.
I imagine that after several years of being portrayed as the international boogeyman, China is very happy to let Russia have the limelight, and hopefully gain some karma as a neutral 3rd party promoting peace.

China is in a dilemma. On the one hand all the calculations point to a loss if they try to prop up Russia. It is in China's economic interest to cut ties with Russia, let it sink, and commit to trade relations with the EU and US. BUT... also in China's calculation is that Russia is their strongest (militarily) ally. They have compatible (if not exactly similar) ideologies, and are (ideologically) arrayed against "western democracies". If Russia falls or is diminished, then China stands alone... against the US, NATO, AUKUS, and the QUAD.
Yes, China can't afford to bail out Russia... but it doesn't want to lose its only (ideological) friend. That is their dilemma.

Under Bismark and Kaiser Wilhelm I Germany was careful to avoid entanglements with problems Austria-Hungary had in the Balkans. As Bismark said "The next war will start because of some damn fool thing in the Balkans". With Bismark gone and Kaiser Wilhelm I nephew Wilhelm II on the throne Bismark's careful treaties were let to expire.
-Nevertheless although Germany was prone to supporting Austria it was not unlimited. When Austria made demands upon Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand the Germans asked to see the demands and the Austrians flat out lied and said they hadn't written them yet. when they had already come back from Serbia agreed to except for 1 harsh point. The Germans would never have backed this bar Austrian lies. Note Wilhelm II loved Princess Sofie and Archduke Ferdinand and would drop everything when they were passing through Germany. When they were both assassinated it hit him very hard personally.
-Note also the huge effort the Danish Royal Family put in to causing a war with Germany. In 1846 they went insane and tried to gain territory by having a war with Prussia. They lost but spent the next 60 years seeking revenge.

A French economist Jacques Sapir stated that we measure economies the wrong way. Russia economy based on gdp ppp before the sanctions was over 5 trillion dollars. Meaning Russia represent about 5 percent of the global gdp. Russia is also a commodity giant. Commodities like oils, metal, food products etc are exported from Russia into the global market. The ramifications of the sanctions will not only be felt by Russians but countries that import commodities from Russia. He also stated that western countries and their allies have an exaggerated economy. The service sector of EU countries and the USA are inflated. The west have been able to fool the world into believing that a large service sectors are the indicators of a developed economy. Industries and commodities are also needed to keep the world going. Without the inflated economies, China and Russia already have an economic output that rival both EUROPE and USA combined.
The shift of industries from Europe and USA to China haven’t made a large impact on an average European and American but an average Chinese have become significantly richer. This will be detrimental to USA and Europe in the long run because their economies are surviving on debt.
Commodities exporting countries are becoming smarter especially those in Africa. Countries like Dr Congo are banning cobalt export which will affect electric vehicles production. Ghana and Ivory Coast are reducing export of their Cocoa bean to Europe and now producing final products. Guinea have the largest bauxite reserves in the world. When the country had a coup, the price of bauxite and aluminum skyrocketed. The new military leader have given mining companies till May to open refineries and factories for bauxite processing in the country. The idea that commodities are insignificant in the world economy is flawed. Russians might not be able to access Netflix and McDonald’s, but commodity importing countries can’t do without Russian oil, gas, wheat, metals etc even if there are other sources for these commodities, it will be more than you are willing to pay.

You clearly don't know Europe and the tremendous industrial output of countries like the Netherlands, Germany or Italy, otherwise you would not be talking about "services" as if it was the only source of wealth for Europe.
I do agree that the GDP measurements are inaccurate, but china's services value added to GDP already represents 55% of GDP and it grows almost 1 pp every year, in less than 10 years the Chinese GDP will be more dependent on services than Germany or Italy both at 63% and 66% respectively, as you can see, China is not what you think it is. China is a Service base Economy, it has been since 2015.
Europe needs commodities/raw materials just as much as the rest of the world needs the finished goods that are made from those raw materials. Africa, Russia and everyone else can hold raw materials if they wish to do so, however, the consequence is not targeted to only one country, the consequence is global paralysis of the industrial system at a planetary scale and consequent global economic depression, or in case of non essential raw materials like cocoa, the death of the chocolate industry, at a global scale. good luck selling cocoa when the consumers have already been convinced to buy 10x cheaper corn-based artificial chocolate...

@@pedrolopes3542 Ok so I googled about Netherlands, Germany and Italy’s export. Netherlands export products are mainly machinery and transport equipments ( Which is not specified), chemicals and fuels ( which is imported from poorer countries and converted to finished products), foodstuffs( Agriculture can easily be substituted), clothing( I don’t even know what that is). Most of Netherlands export goes into the EU. Services represents 81% of Netherlands economy.
Germany export products are mainly machinery and computers. Germany also imports most of its export products, so I am guessing Germany is a reexport economy because it seems like it. Most of Germany export go to USA and EU countries not third world countries where Germany gets it natural resources from. Services represent 74.3% of the German economy.
Italy exports are mainly Engineering products, textiles and clothing, production machinery, motor vehicles, transport equipment, chemicals; foodstuffs, beverages, and tobacco; minerals, nonferrous metals. Italy basically export similar things to other European countries. I am starting to think most EU countries are reexport economy that survives on the value of euro. Italy services sector represents 73.9 percent of its gdp.
Mind you, you said Africa and Russia can keep their resources, but the EU have gone to Nigeria for gas, Italy ran to Congo and Angola for gas import. Africa have to demand their gas to be paid in Naira, rand or their own currencies not euro. Euro have been propped up because Russia sells their resources to Europe in euro.

In fact Chinese investment into Russia besides the energy sector had steadily shrinking during the years. Russia is really not very welcoming to Chinese investments.
Many organized crime groups target Chinese businessman there for robbery, ransom, kidnapping, you name it. A lot of small Chinese merchants selling cheap clothes there got their shopes set on fired by logal gangs. Not to mention rasicim against ordinary Chinese people, even the tourists, by some xenophobic Russians.
All in all, despite heavy government propaganda and cencership, the chinese people who had being working in Russia or studied in Russia, generally recommend their friends to stay away from it. Now, it is only the government doing the investments due to political reasons. And some brainwashed Chinese who had never being to Russia would buy some russian candies now as a guesture of support, being lead by the propaganda machine.

Everyone going by some line of pragmaticism on China's part because it has to be spoken of in the characteristics of a villain. But even if it was, I think what people who grew up with China only framed as the villain often miss is China's character. In China's perspective, it never condones offensive wars, and each of it's own conflicts is framed squarely in the idea that it's theirs. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang/Uighur, Diayutai/Senkaku are, whatever anyone thinks, squarely within historicity of its claims. China is consistent on this even when its not in China's favor: Bhutan, weaker and easier than Tibet, not claimed. Mongolia, was part of the Qing and the ROC, but the PRC gave it independence. North Korea, could have easily been claimed or even puppeted, but China didn't stay. Various interests in Africa threatened by Boko Haram/ISWAP, no foreign expeditions. Terrorist attack linkable to Pakistan, ask Pakistan, no foreign expeditions.
Modern Russia has made no claim that Ukraine should belong to it. Russia taking a chunk out of another sovereign Nation it has no claim to does not fit within China's rules. If anything, this is something China itself fears the most, its entire history is prevailing in the face of invaders and its trauma is being torn apart by outside powers. Even if you consider Xi evil enough to condone Russia, and he does have an iron grip on the parliament as well as hardline supporters, China itself cannot beyond the usual tankies who still confuse Russia for the USSR.
Voices of support are more in the spirit of loyalty, which is another characteristic China has to stick to. North Korea and Pakistan are not convenient allies, but they are brothers. So is Russia, so for better or for worse, the character of China has to walk this tightrope.
On a more pragmatic scale, China has much of its wealth dependent on the World economy. This is by design, things like having wealth in US debt or the success of developing countries is China's unspoken guarantee that it's acting within a global accord. Russia does have its own excuses what with Special Military Operations for just enough deniability that China will do the usual "consider Russia's perspective, we should all be calm and not get drastic of condemning people" talk out of loyalty, as honor demands, but it won't stray into condoning foreign invasion.
