I came from your Void Stranger video, but it's honestly this video that's sold me on your channel. I hope this video and your other ones also get the attention they deserve.
I love your analysis, such a great breakdown of a cinematic I've always loved without ever knowing what made it special. That said: your choice to stretch the 4:3 cinematic and gameplay footage to 16:9 is really jarring.
Tim Schafer also worked on "Day of the Tentacle" (1993). Its wonderful 4-minute long opening credit sequence was animated by CalArts intern Kyle Balda, who went on to work for ILM, Pixar and Illumination.
Good work. Grim fandango is one of my favorite games ever and it's really hard to get across how good it is to people. This video gives a good glimpse of how well put together the game is.
This video is great! Grim Fandango is also one of my favorites and I've always loved how organic this is compared to so many game openings, you're really on the same level as Celso in a way who just arrived in the land of the dead and needs Manny to explain to him how the game's world works, like the player who just booted up the game :)
Man, having gotten into storytelling during covid and now re-visiting this game as I'm studying how to make games this video is really making my day. Was watching the making of the remaster yesterday and I'm listening to the commentary going through the game, the depth, passion and ammount of work that was put into it is astonishing. I was just a stupid kid when I tried playing it for the first time, me and my friends could never figure out the puzzles since they were quite complex and not really made for non English native kids. Btw lol at GOW:Ragnarök, I haven't played it yet since I'm not getting a PS5 so waiting for the PC version, sounds like yet another button-smashing week for me without thinking once it arrives.
This was a nice video, looking forward to more! Great style, easy to listen to and interesting. I've never played Grim Fandango but I'm all the more interested now. Cool to get here while the channels warming up. Saw you chatting on YGA and was interested in the scripted content. You got my support bud! 😊
Oh, so that's why people talk about this game. Heard about it for years but, honestly, now I'm interested in it. One of my personal favorite openings in games is Planescape: Torment. It seems simple, even kinda cliche, with a body being rolled in on a slab, a bunch of snippets that show the major plots in the game with no explination, and then the body getting up. And that's kinda genius because the character has no idea what's going on because he has no memory. The player and character are starting with a mystery... and then that smartass floating skull comes over and adds both answers and mystery and potentially more mysteries depending on how you play it. Also Mechwarrior 4 because, while being very straightforward, there's a ton of details over radio chatter that get drowned out that makes it feel like an actual battle situation. And the doomed hero always gets empathy.
Great video about a great game! Have you seen an audition material for grim fandango? It has a slightly different dialogue between Manny and Celso in the beginning, interesting how a few changed sentences can elevate the whole scene
One big part of this is the soundtrack. I can't really smart-person-analyse it, but it really helps to set the tone and mood at every turn. Edit: You already mentioned that. Oops. :P
@@thegammelier Hey, atleast you're honest about it :P Great video, by the way! Grim Fandango became one of my favourite games recently and you explained the whole thing really well!
The 1998 trailer has those two beautiful lines: - Guess they couldn't save me, eh? - No, but there's still a chance you could save me. th-cam.com/video/hV1NBHL9Fa4/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for watching my first (and worst) video! GF's an excellent game everyone should play at least once
This game is one of my favourites
It's one of the best!
What a lovely ode to a wonderful game.
Look forward to seeing what else you have in store 👍

Thanks for the feedback! This was my first video so there’ll be some kinks to work out for the next one.
@@thegammelier This was your first video?!? It's quite good! I'm excited to see what other games you explore

I may also do a video on the entire first act, since it all ties together so well.

Thanks! Just put my new video up and already have my next one in mind
You earned a sub great job man
Thanks! I appreciate it
This video makes me want to go on vacation.
Hopefully not to the Land of the Dead…

I haven’t but I’ll have to check that out! Yeah, even the smallest changes to dialogue can have huge impacts.

Great to hear! Give the other Lucasarts classics a try if you haven’t, Monkey Island 2 & 3, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle- all excellent games!
@@thegammelier Full Throttle is the next one in line for me! I've been thinking of getting back to finishing Sam & Max later down the line too.

This intro is so good, the whole game is amazing. Another good intro is Far Cry 5!
Haven’t played a FC since 3, which I loved and ALSO has a great intro!
0:54 Totally agree, never realized and imagined that I will see that scene again on the end screen.🥲
