    this channel is underrated.

    Extremely well put points:
    - how games are usually power fantasies
    - Alien Isolation is the best example you could give at that point
    - How Outlast is connected to cinema via the camcorder.
    - The evolutionary alliance with darkness
    - how losing the camera feels worse than losing ones fingers
    - how opening doors in Amnesia feels like actually doing it yourself
    - death as the main unknowable
    - the point of Lovecraft is that humans are insignificant
    I am really glad I'm subscribed. Excellent content. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

      @@GameologicalDig keep in mind that the spongebob skin theory video had like 2k views for a year and then suddenly got 500k despite the uploader not doing anything. Views seem to come in recommendations, which tend to happen on a delay for some reason. I just rediscovered your channel for this reason, youtube started recommending me your videos

      I just want you to know that my Friend and I watched all of your SOMA videos after playing the game - they were fantastic. Please, keep doing what you are doing. I imagine that it's extremely taxing, but you put out fantastic content.

    Not only did I subscribe because you made lore videos about my favorite video game of all time Bioshock and not only because you make lore videos about games but because of your vocabulary. English is my second language and I wish I could use words the way you do (mostly cause I don't know how to use them properly!). You articulate words marvelously and I'm over here all googoo gaga! Great channel, I look forward to more!

    Amnesia: The Dark Descent was one of the hardest damn games I've ever forced myself to play. It scared the everloving shit out of me, for all of the reasons you've said here.
    Have yet to play Outlast, but I'm sure I'll force myself to play it...sometime...before I die...
    Excellent video, sir. As always.

      @GameologicalDig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Karinabob. Haven’t seen you in a while. How’s life?
      Amnesia was one of the few horror games I had to play in short sessions. It’s emotional draining and super effective.
      I do recommend Outlast and it’s DLC. They’re funhouse scares, but very fun funhouse scares. Thanks btw.

    • @KarinTheDragon
      @KarinTheDragon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm doing well! Just a busy bee with school and work and life.
      I had to do the same with Amnesia the first time I played it. The second time I played it I managed like, 2-3 hour sessions without too much trouble since I knew more of what to expect.
      And FINE I guess I'll play Outlast. I own the games, I just haven't touched them yet because they scaaaaaare meeeeee

    Absolutely amazing video, very detailed and professional. Both Outlast 1 and Amnesia happen to be some of my all-time favorite horror games. They were both good as well as terrifying for a variety of reasons. I very much agree on the whole H.P. Lovecraft bit. Amnesia always made me dread the darkness so much, especially the dungeon that you enter about halfway through. It is a place of absolute darkness, very limited sources of light - and many creatures lurking everywhere. Amnesia taught me to cherish the light, but also how dangerous it can be. Balancing the two was always a complicated thing. But above that was the classic fear of the unknown. Not knowing what to expect, treating every corridor like a monster waiting to jump out. I hated descending further and further into the castle, but learned to overcome the fear.
    Outlast on the other hand wasn't as scary (though the sewers in particular certainly felt a little like the dungeon from Amnesia), primarily because of the opposition consisting mostly of human life. I personally fear the supernatural / cosmic much more than "ordinary" dangers. The human mind can comprehend human enemies, analyze them, understand them. It makes a pursuing madman such as a random inmate of the asylum less scary than say a monstrous gatherer from the castle. But the fear was still there naturally, any time spent within the darkness felt tense. The camcorder gave light, but just like the lantern of Amnesia it would only serve a limited amount of time. However in Outlast you would often need to act fast, using that advantage over your enemies to make it from one area to the next. Another balance to find basically. So easily betraying you.
    Like I said, a great video. I made a Let's Play of Outlast 1 back in 2013, and this sure brought back some sweet memories, about Amnesia as well. Loved it.

    BLOODBORNE DETECTED! Are you gonna delve into the SoulsBourne series some day? I'd love to see you dig into the thematics of those games. Although the amount to sift through would probably take up your entire channel.

    I do have one question for you though...what type of microphone do you use for your voice-overs? It gives your voice stellar clarity, quality, and resonance. (I'm shopping around for microphones and I'm just asking for varied opinions. Thank you!)

      Ororo aka ‘ That Girl in the Bow Ties’ Munroe Thanks so very much! Truly appreciate the kind words. I’ve been using a Heil PR-40, which is quite good but very pricey. I got it on sale for about $360. I really like it, so if you’re in the market and have the $$$ don’t hesitate.

    The shadow isn't an unfortunate placeholder name, I know this line was a joke, but in the storys themes of succumbing to immorality, the shadow represents the protagonist being chased by his own jungian shadow, the monster of himself, that he's guilty of and tries to resolve, his motivation is his guilt at his own shadows potential for evil. It's a shame they really got good at writing with soma because I really like the themes amnesia works with but doesn't pursue very much.

      love your insights and though i abandoned Outlast because of the gore focus (i prefer my horrors more on the psychological side) it was great to hear you explain how it worked and the game design choices which were indeed quite intriguing. Btw, in case you're curious where it ends up also, reposted this on my little games as art blog artsygamer.com/darkness-used-as-a-game-design-element/

    Amnesia is one of the very few games that was ultra praised and recommended that I hated, everyone claimed how good and scary it was. The only thing that damn game gave to me.. was severe motion sickness with its distortion effects.

      Morrigon VR Think of Outlast like a fun house or haunted house attraction. I promise, it’ll make it less tense (not really ;-). Amnesia, on the other hand...
