Kimiko was tooo good to be true. But I cannot deny Queen Venus’s comeback from 5-1 to 6-5 was nothing short of legendary! One of my 2 favorite WTA matches EVER!

Crazy how well Kimiko was able to do against someone vastly stronger than her and younger!!

Venus was in big trouble this day because of her disease I think, her movements and timing were quite bad for her. But yes, Kimiko was just so good.

Venus was clearly struggling physically with her illness, this was right before her diagnosis. She won with fight and grit alone. Amazing

Thank Goodness someone else noticed. It was a good match, no doubt. But Venus was struggling with her shots- both in terms of feeling the ball, and penetration which led to so many uncharacteristic errors (even for Venus)! This was especially on the backhand side. She won the match but went on to lose to Pironkova in such dire fashion.

@@KadeKempson yeah those pironkova losses are still head scratching….I think that tight 8-6 loss in 2006 AO gave her a mental block against her and this type of player that matches well against Venus.

Women's tennis these days, lacks the all court game that these girls had in their days. Venus was and is a prodigy. She's a tennis school in her own rights. If I have to make my daughter a tennis player I will teach her about this iconic American woman.

Kimiko's shots were so disguised and unpredictable especially the backhand, no wonder he comeback despite the old age, was such a success

There were many great players in the WTA back in the 90s.
90s was only one of them, not even among the 10 best of that decade.

Kimiko surprised Venus especially in the first set. After that Venus knew better not to extend the point and finish the point ASAP. Kimiko gave one hell of a fight in the 3rd set but Venus experience and that champion mentality gave her the edge.

Kimiko Date beat Sharapova, Stosur, Li in 2010 and Penetta, Muguruza in 2014.
All five Slam winners in the early/mid-2010s.
Plus Date lost many tough 3-set matches against other top players of that time.
Kimiko was 39-43 years old then.
And there are people out there who really think women‘s tennis improved from the 1990s…
    😜

    • @Ttjam1

There must have been some improvement otherwise Kimiko would have returned to her previous ranking (unless she was better in her twenties)

@@Ttjam1 You think Kimiko Date might have been better as a 25-year-old than as a 40-year-old....?

@@carrerau7138 well I was watching some of the 1996 Wimbledon semi and she seemed more erratic there than in this match

@@Ttjam1 There has never lived a female pro who was a better player at 40 than at 25.
      Don't be delusional.
The point is that a 43-year-old Kimiko Date in 2014 beat two slam winners of that era.
Proving that those fans who call the 2008-17 era a "clown era" are right.

Love this match. There is nothing more remarkable than Venus and grass. Also Kimiko is one of those players who could have won a slam, really. Always had to play either the world 1 or 2 in the semi-finals. Just didn't have the edge to push past them.

    • @carrerau7138
      @carrerau7138 ปีที่แล้ว

Kimiko was in her prime when Navratilova, Graf, Sanchez, Seles ruled.
Almost impossible for good but not great players to win slams back then.
Today even the Schiavones, Stosurs, Pennettas, Ostapenkos, Stephenses, Andreescus, Raducanus have their slam trophy they can polish at home.

0:19 that ball bounced *before* the chalk line.. even at 0:20 it has already bounced and still has not crossed the line. Probably it's the angle but doubt it.
