According to my personal experience vocabulary list works in very early part of language learning. Fruits, vegetables, things that we use in our daily life can be learned by vocabulary list. However, abstract notions and ideas can not be learned properly without context.
I recently reached an advanced level in Icelandic after focusing mostly on it for a few months, so now my Icelandic is around the level of my Norwegian, and in Dutch I am upper advanced level, and upper intermediate level in Norse and German, and mid intermediate level in Welsh and Swedish and Portuguese and French and Italian etc, and I am learning 25+ of my target languages, while focusing on the prettiest languages the most, so learning languages is super enjoyable, because my target languages have super gorgeous words, and pretty words are naturally enjoyable and fun to learn, plus they are naturally easy to memorize, as one’s hern naturally learns the prettier and more distinctive words faster, so pretty words requires less repetition, and, pretty languages are also naturally motivating because pretty words naturally bring true joy to the eye and ear, as one naturally wants to see things that are pretty and hear sounds that sound good and cool, even when one doesn’t consciously admit it or when one doesn’t consciously realize it, the hern subconsciously wants to learn pretty words, which is why pretty words are naturally easier to memorize and learn and remember, whereas words that aren’t pretty require a lot more repetitions because the hern subconsciously tries to forget them or to not learn them because non-pretty words do not bring joy to the eye and ear, which is why it’s so important to only choose pretty languages aka languages that have mostly or almost only pretty words that have pretty word endings and good or great letter combinations (combinations of letters that go well 2gether and that aren’t random) and that have modern ‘n’ cool sound and organized aspect and that look and sound professional and serious! By the way, to memorize the words, one must learn pretty words only that are naturally enjoyable and that the hern naturally wants to remember such as the Icelandic / Norse / Dutch etc words which are so gorgeous and easy to memorize, and the repetitions must be on different days, not on the same day, so the vocab videos should be watched at least 3 times in a row on the first three sessions at normal speed, and then once every three days or once a week etc, over the course of the first year of learning, and they can be watched on maximum speed most of the times, because if a video is like ten hours long with thousands of words, it will only be five hours long if watched on maximum speed! For example, when I first started watching a ten-hour long video with Icelandic words, I first watched it on normal speed to see and hear the words well, but most other times when I rewatched it I watched it on maximum speed, and I learned almost all the Icelandic words from those videos with hundreds and thousands of words after watching them about ten times or more, over the course of a few months, and I also learned thousands of new words from G translate and from subs and from lyrics, so now I know over 6.500 words, probably even more than that, because there are usually only ten new words per video in every new video, so I know a lot of Icelandic words now, and I recently reached an advanced, and I also noticed that I can read very fast now, and it’s way easier to read the sentences and words! I always notice fast progress as I focus mostly on actively learning and revising hundreds and thousands of new words as well as previously learnt words every few days or every week, and I can tell when I get to an advanced level because I notice that I can understand almost every word in every new video and there are usually only a few new words per video, for example, now that I am advanced level in Icelandic, I only see about ten new words in each new video that’s shorter and about 20 new words in videos that are longer than twenty minutes, and I can read pretty fast now, especially the words that I know and the words that I know automatically, and, I know that a word has become part of my permanent and automatic memory when I can instantly process it and automatically remember it whenever I want to! Besides, I only learn pretty and easy languages, so the learning process is naturally very enjoyable, and, the only way to truly enjoy language learning is by always choosing wisely (only choosing the pretty and easy languages) and especially the prettiest languages ever Norse and Icelandic and Dutch and English and Norwegian and Gothic and Faroese and Danish and Welsh and Breton and Cornish which are the most gorgeous languages ever that are the most fun to learn and speak and hear and see etc and the easiest to learn, which is key to being a successful polyglot and to reaching true fluency, and it is also very important to always revise a lot and to focus mostly on vocab, so I highly recommend learning at least three hundred to one thousand new words every few days or every week and at the same time constantly revising previously learnt words, many times, over a longer period of time, as one must actively see and hear and revise each word at least 30 times over the course of two or three years for each word to become automatic, and I recommend watching every video with subs in the target languages, because, the more one sees the words, the more automatic they become!

I needed these tips. I’ve watched this video two times already. I’ve had the same list of 100 Russian Verbs I could NOT memorize, no matter how hard I tried. I will be making a phrase notebook for them now. I really hope it works because learning them will help my comprehension A LOT I think…and then I can start understanding native videos again 🤩. Спс))

I’m so glad that I’ve seen this video today. I’ve never felt okay about vocabulary notebooks since I learn how human brain works. But also writing down the things you learn can be pretty useful so I had a notebook to write phrases from songs I listen, movies, random youtube videos, english learning shorts etc. And to be honest when I don’t learn how to use them they just pass away even tho I know that they are gonna be helpful in the future. So it’s important to interact with the language anyways. Our brain needs to feel that we’re using it and we’re gonna need it :)

At my B1 Turkish level, watching Turkish series on TH-cam with subtitles has proven to be surprisingly useful. As you said, of course I don't understand everything, but I can follow the plot without big problems and it really gives me the opportunity to learn the language in its natural entourage.

Hi Iclal, I’m a French native speaker and I’m currently watching your video. I find this way of learning new words absolutely functional, it definitely works. I did it as I got the B1-B2 level of German and it was really helpful to have deeper conversations with native speakers of that of language. I didn’t do that from A1 to B1 levels but I should do it in other languages… I admire you because my dream is to become polyglot. You’re so smart! Very cool tips , specially about writting sentences and not just words. After you have written sentences, how do you review the sentence notebook? For example at some point when its almost full, do you really go back and review sentence by sentence ? Or do you have a method for that?

Your recommendation, which is about learning language through writing down some vocabulary in a notebook, hasn't been offered by some experts. However, specifically, both in our conventional education system and all around the world, this sort of acquisition is highlighted. As an ESL teacher, I agree with you on the basis of obtaining the basics of language via reiterating or scripting phrases; so that one could get the fundamentals of the target language in which s/he's practicing. Wow, this video is what I needed to hear. I often start something at A2 and then listen to full movies or fluent youtubers in the language. As expected, I get completely lost. You said that listening in the level you are at will help and it's so obvious but I never really did it. It is also a great tip to say 'learn in context'. Writing sentences using the words is a lot better than just writing a ton of words on a page. In Chinese this is very difficult though because you need to learn a lot of new symbols that are unlike other written languages. However, Chinese listening and talking isn't very complicated at all. Only tones are the hardest part. Thank you for this!

Up until very recently I did vocabulary notebooks but then it disn't help me as much as it supposed to. Mainly because it was a mess and didn't remember where I wrote the word I was looking for. I think your approach is much more useful and efficient. I will try it.

Şimdi seviyeme uygun bir kitabı okurken anlamını bilmediğim kelimeleri quizlet uygulamasına ekliyorum (bağlamını zaten okurken gördüğüm için bağlam konusunda sıkıntı olmuyor ve dönüp ara ara tekrar okuyorum zaten aynı metni) oradan da tekrar yapmış olmakla birlikte kelimenin dinleme alıştırmasını da yapmış oluyorum.Aynı kelimelere okuma sırasında sürekli denk geldiğim için pekişiyor zaten. Bu şekilde en azından sürdürülebilirlik konusunda sorun yaşamıyorum.Kelimenin eş anlamlısı, zıt anlamlısı vs. zamanla, okudukça oturur zaten. Siz bu yöntem hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz? Hi Iclal 💖 I have a question. Do you separate phrases by their first letter as you’d do with words list? Lets say I want to memorize the word ‘immense’ and I find a phrase with that word. Do I need to separate immense in the section “I” or just randomly write down all the phrases I want to learn? I am a little confused. After watching your video, I felt an immense urge to get back to studying again, and I have written some phrases down already, but I have done them randomly. After write words annotate their meanings I write sentence with that word and it works a lot And i have a question I use Cambridge dictionary for English but I cant find any dictionary for Russian like Cambridge where can i find these dictionaries?

I'm struggling with the learning vocabulary in any languages i learn. at the end i learn it more or less the same way. it is more natural because i can't get stick on flash cards for time it needs. Очень тяжело на начальной стадии, когда контекст еще не понимаешь толком и сложно найти то, что интересно. Когда ты погружаешся забывая о времени, о том, что это другой язык усвоение идет намного лучше или точнее глубже.

I interested in Slavic languages. Their pronunciations sound nice. If I learn one of them, can I understand the other. Can you understand Bosnian as a person knowing Russian when you listen a conversation or read a text. You had said in your old videos that a person who know Spanish can learn İtalian easily. if school doesn't have any contribution to that, you should start focusing on your speaking skills by yourself. you can find online language exchange partners or just try speaking to yourself in your daily life

According to my personal experience vocabulary list works in very early part of language learning. Fruits, vegetables, things that we use in our daily life can be learned by vocabulary list. However, abstract notions and ideas can not be learned properly without context.

I recently reached an advanced level in Icelandic after focusing mostly on it for a few months, so now my Icelandic is around the level of my Norwegian, and in Dutch I am upper advanced level, and upper intermediate level in Norse and German, and mid intermediate level in Welsh and Swedish and Portuguese and French and Italian etc, and I am learning 25+ of my target languages, while focusing on the prettiest languages the most, so learning languages is super enjoyable, because my target languages have super gorgeous words, and pretty words are naturally enjoyable and fun to learn, plus they are naturally easy to memorize, as one’s hern naturally learns the prettier and more distinctive words faster, so pretty words requires less repetition, and, pretty languages are also naturally motivating because pretty words naturally bring true joy to the eye and ear, as one naturally wants to see things that are pretty and hear sounds that sound good and cool, even when one doesn’t consciously admit it or when one doesn’t consciously realize it, the hern subconsciously wants to learn pretty words, which is why pretty words are naturally easier to memorize and learn and remember, whereas words that aren’t pretty require a lot more repetitions because the hern subconsciously tries to forget them or to not learn them because non-pretty words do not bring joy to the eye and ear, which is why it’s so important to only choose pretty languages aka languages that have mostly or almost only pretty words that have pretty word endings and good or great letter combinations (combinations of letters that go well 2gether and that aren’t random) and that have modern ‘n’ cool sound and organized aspect and that look and sound professional and serious!
By the way, to memorize the words, one must learn pretty words only that are naturally enjoyable and that the hern naturally wants to remember such as the Icelandic / Norse / Dutch etc words which are so gorgeous and easy to memorize, and the repetitions must be on different days, not on the same day, so the vocab videos should be watched at least 3 times in a row on the first three sessions at normal speed, and then once every three days or once a week etc, over the course of the first year of learning, and they can be watched on maximum speed most of the times, because if a video is like ten hours long with thousands of words, it will only be five hours long if watched on maximum speed!
For example, when I first started watching a ten-hour long video with Icelandic words, I first watched it on normal speed to see and hear the words well, but most other times when I rewatched it I watched it on maximum speed, and I learned almost all the Icelandic words from those videos with hundreds and thousands of words after watching them about ten times or more, over the course of a few months, and I also learned thousands of new words from G translate and from subs and from lyrics, so now I know over 6.500 words, probably even more than that, because there are usually only ten new words per video in every new video, so I know a lot of Icelandic words now, and I recently reached an advanced, and I also noticed that I can read very fast now, and it’s way easier to read the sentences and words!
I always notice fast progress as I focus mostly on actively learning and revising hundreds and thousands of new words as well as previously learnt words every few days or every week, and I can tell when I get to an advanced level because I notice that I can understand almost every word in every new video and there are usually only a few new words per video, for example, now that I am advanced level in Icelandic, I only see about ten new words in each new video that’s shorter and about 20 new words in videos that are longer than twenty minutes, and I can read pretty fast now, especially the words that I know and the words that I know automatically, and, I know that a word has become part of my permanent and automatic memory when I can instantly process it and automatically remember it whenever I want to!

I needed these tips. I’ve watched this video two times already. I’ve had the same list of 100 Russian Verbs I could NOT memorize, no matter how hard I tried. I will be making a phrase notebook for them now. I really hope it works because learning them will help my comprehension A LOT I think…and then I can start understanding native videos again 🤩. Спс))

I’m so glad that I’ve seen this video today. I’ve never felt okay about vocabulary notebooks since I learn how human brain works. But also writing down the things you learn can be pretty useful so I had a notebook to write phrases from songs I listen, movies, random youtube videos, english learning shorts etc. And to be honest when I don’t learn how to use them they just pass away even tho I know that they are gonna be helpful in the future. So it’s important to interact with the language anyways. Our brain needs to feel that we’re using it and we’re gonna need it :)

At my B1 Turkish level, watching Turkish series on TH-cam with subtitles has proven to be surprisingly useful. As you said, of course I don't understand everything, but I can follow the plot without big problems and it really gives me the opportunity to learn the language in its natural entourage.

I did it as I got the B1-B2 level of German and it was really helpful to have deeper conversations with native speakers of that of language. I didn’t do that from A1 to B1 levels but I should do it in other languages… I admire you because my dream is to become polyglot. You’re so smart! Your recommendation, which is about learning language through writing down some vocabulary in a notebook, hasn't been offered by some experts. However, specifically, both in our conventional education system and all around the world, this sort of acquisition is highlighted. As an ESL teacher, I agree with you on the basis of obtaining the basics of language via reiterating or scripting phrases; so that one could get the fundamentals of the target language in which s/he's practicing. Wow, this video is what I needed to hear. I often start something at A2 and then listen to full movies or fluent youtubers in the language. As expected, I get completely lost. You said that listening in the level you are at will help and it's so obvious but I never really did it. It is also a great tip to say 'learn in context'. Writing sentences using the words is a lot better than just writing a ton of words on a page. In Chinese this is very difficult though because you need to learn a lot of new symbols that are unlike other written languages. However, Chinese listening and talking isn't very complicated at all. Only tones are the hardest part. Thank you for this!

Memorising words doesn't make you speak so learning phrases is much more useful.
you can't do anything without words. Don't forget that phrases consist of words. words are like bricks. the fundamental point.

Up until very recently I did vocabulary notebooks but then it disn't help me as much as it supposed to. Mainly because it was a mess and didn't remember where I wrote the word I was looking for. I think your approach is much more useful and efficient. I will try it.

he/she wants to knowledge about the languages maybe , or just like the pronuncation/verbs the learning languages? it either can be for fun.
I really want to learn languages. I want to be limited to one language because a new language means a new person.
I've been learning russian for a year, no solid reason, just for fun lol and I managed to advance a lot

This is her own way. İ use linguee or reverso apps to read the new word in a context and then write the phrase also to have a muscle memory🙂

Ben önceden kelime defteri tutuyordum ve nesne alıp almaması, örnek cümle, eş anlamlısı, benzer kelimeler,zıt anlamlısı vs. ne varsa yazardım örnek cümle olduğu için de bağlamında da öğrenmiş olurdum ama sürdürülebilirlik konusunda sıkıntı yaşadım. Şimdi seviyeme uygun bir kitabı okurken anlamını bilmediğim kelimeleri quizlet uygulamasına ekliyorum (bağlamını zaten okurken gördüğüm için bağlam konusunda sıkıntı olmuyor ve dönüp ara ara tekrar okuyorum zaten aynı metni) oradan da tekrar yapmış olmakla birlikte kelimenin dinleme alıştırmasını da yapmış oluyorum.Aynı kelimelere okuma sırasında sürekli denk geldiğim için pekişiyor zaten. Bu şekilde en azından sürdürülebilirlik konusunda sorun yaşamıyorum.Kelimenin eş anlamlısı, zıt anlamlısı vs. zamanla, okudukça oturur zaten. Siz bu yöntem hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz? I have a question. Do you separate phrases by their first letter as you’d do with words list? Lets say I want to memorize the word ‘immense’ and I find a phrase with that word. Do I need to separate immense in the section “I” or just randomly write down all the phrases I want to learn?

Personally speaking, I like to make vocabulary flashcards so that when I listen to audiobooks, it sticks.
I've been using this method and it really works I just write words and annotate their meanings. After write words annotate their meanings I write sentence with that word and it works a lot And i have a question I use Cambridge dictionary for English but I cant find any dictionary for Russian like Cambridge where can i find these dictionaries?

I'm struggling with the learning vocabulary in any languages i learn. at the end i learn it more or less the same way. it is more natural because i can't get stick on flash cards for time it needs.

Поэтому я ищу способы, которые работают для меня, то, что я на практике могу делать регулярно.. И по большей части это пересматривать, перечитывать, то, что интересно. Очень тяжело на начальной стадии, когда контекст еще не понимаешь толком и сложно найти то, что интересно. Когда ты погружаешся забывая о времени, о том, что это другой язык усвоение идет намного лучше или точнее глубже.
Hello İclal! Above all your videos are motivating us. I wonder one thing. But it is not related with your video. I can't decide that which language can ı learn? Russian or Bosnian. I interested in Slavic languages. Their pronunciations sound nice. If I learn one of them, can I understand the other. Can you understand Bosnian as a person knowing Russian when you listen a conversation or read a text. You had said in your old videos that a person who know Spanish can learn İtalian easily. İs there the same thing in Russian and Bosnian. If I learn one of them, can it help me to learn another? I'm waiting for your opinions. Thanks!
hi idk about her but as a person who speaks bosnian i cant actually understand russian but there are similar words and giving context you may understand a little russian and polish sometimes. hope this info helps

Iclal sister I want to ask you some questions. I'm in the Language section and we have been learning grammer since school started and so far i Haven't been able to speak well. Our teacher does not do any practice like listening speaking etc. We always dive into grammer and i don't know what to do. At first i told my teacher to do some exercises but she didn't accept what i've said. I never imagined it would be like this. I am so bad at speaking . Can you give me some advices? hope you'll see my comment (by the way i didn't use any translation to write this.)
if school doesn't have any contribution to that, you should start focusing on your speaking skills by yourself. you can find online language exchange partners or just try speaking to yourself in your daily life
