I enjoyed this series. When you have an unorganized leader or manager it makes work difficult. But if you have a manager or leader who get their hands dirty and helps employees with tasks it can show that they are dedicated and inspires better work ethic with their employees.
As a customer service manager, I’ve started to see the benefit of all five of these! It makes a very cohesive team comprised of individuals that know a specific goal and accept the chance to help every valued customer through their role. Grateful to play a part and see this
I am a personal manager myself. This video was eye opening to tasks I already do on a daily basis that you mentioned in the video. Very enlightening topics.
I just started studying HRM and your video helped me a lot to understand and motivated me to learn more about HRM and how to be a leadership. Thank you!
I agree that anyone can be a manager, in their profession. No matter what job they are doing, if they are doing the five "steps" such as Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, and Controlling, they are managing in their aspect.
Thank you for the helpful info. The function I focus on most is directing.because motivating and supporting my employees helps morale and keeps them engaged. I have enjoyed listening to your videos. Thank you.
I appreciate that you focus on fundamentals in your video series. It allows listeners to apply what we’ve learned to different areas of our lives. This series seems targeted toward businesses, but I’m glad you’re not limiting these principles only to businesses. Being a good leader and manager is important in personal relationships, too- in our households, arranging birthday parties, or even going to the beach with friends. Something that I’m interested in hearing you talk about is how “authority” applies to leadership and management. Obviously, your friends aren’t going to consider you a revered “authority” of which hamburger buns should be brought to the backyard BBQ (unless you’re some sort of buns connoisseur), but someone DOES need to be in charge of logistics, to ensure that someone’s bringing the soda and chips, too!
You really get what I'm trying to convey. All too often when we think of leadership and management we get stuck thinking about the workplace. We don't see ourselves as leaders and managers, and in so doing miss a great opportunity to exercise more influence in our lives and make meaningful things come to pass.
I enjoy having the steps mapped out like this. I see how I go about using these steps in my day to day to manage my own life like housework or dealing with my children. Great content! very informative. thank you!
I appreciate how these 5 skills tract to personal management. I wouldn't call it a perfect preparation because you aren't including other people, but anyone can begin by apply these principles to their lives. If we were more proactive about managing our own lives, and then putting ourselves out there in groups that we are already a part of (including family groups), then maybe being a manager wouldn't be out last stop with the Peter Principle. ^.^
Going along with the previous video of the differences between a leader and a manager, I agree that the best managers/leaders know how to unlock and channel the potential of others through the 5 functions of management that you have discussed in this video.
I think this video shows the needs of these functions especially in business today due to COVID-19 we must be constantly changing. I personally have struggled with these in the past as a manager and have fallen because i didn't know them. I will take this to future jobs and remember there importance.
I like the term “people managers” as opposed to just managers. I feel that this creates a larger outlook and it feels more applicable to other real world situations, not just in the workplace. I also liked how you mentioned that the best managers know how to motivate and inspire their people. When employees, or followers feel appreciated and understood, they will perform better.
It was nice to see the functions of management mapped out! There are a lot of ways that management functions relate to how we as individuals function and manage our personal tasks! This video helped me to understands management a lot better! Thanks Professor.
First off great Moustache, really mad the video :). I really liked how you explained about how each of us are all managers. Knowing that, it puts into perspective for me that we each are able to change the outcomes but evaluating our inputs
Anyone can be a manager in their own lives or at work. It's all abut how you plan, organize, staff, control, and direct the resources at your disposal.
I'm very glad to hear that. I have an entire series on People Management if you re looking for ways to increase your skillsets in this area, so check it out.
I feel like my manager at the moment is severely lacking in #4 - Directing. He never holds meetings or communicates with us, the team, about what short term goals are to be expected from the firm.
You're right. There are many different interpretations of the functions of management. If you Google four functions you see another take. It doesn't matter what descriptors we use, so long as we exercise the right discipline. So yes, your descriptors work great!
The graphics made me so engaged in what I was learning!
For those in a class rn,
The five elements of management are Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Implementing, and Controlling.
Good point. I should put time codes in the description so people can find them more easily.
@@NutshellBrainery that would be great.
I agree with Claire...one of the most valuable points noted is that each are positions are important for totality.
I enjoyed this series. When you have an unorganized leader or manager it makes work difficult. But if you have a manager or leader who get their hands dirty and helps employees with tasks it can show that they are dedicated and inspires better work ethic with their employees.
i wish more managers understood these functions! great video!
I really like the point that Courtney brought up. The best manager help their team by going above and beyond.
As a customer service manager, I’ve started to see the benefit of all five of these! It makes a very cohesive team comprised of individuals that know a specific goal and accept the chance to help every valued customer through their role. Grateful to play a part and see this
You're so right. A good manager uses all of these skills, no matter what sort of manager you are.
I am a personal manager myself. This video was eye opening to tasks I already do on a daily basis that you mentioned in the video. Very enlightening topics.
It's always interesting to me how often I end up thinking about thinks I already know in a new way, making them feel new.

I like all the steps
I personally really enjoyed these five functions. How every individual is responsible for each task .
A video worth watching as it brings many questions in my head on my day to day life.

The nice things is how the overall idea can be applied to different areas, not specifically if you manage people, cool content!

Could not agree more! And yes, we are all managers, in our own but no less significant way.
I strive to improve as a manager and these were awesome tips
It was nice to see these functions mapped out. This is an interesting video. This video had good advice and perspectives.
We are a class learning about the 5 functions, you did did a good job of explaining each one. One student has requested more action!!
My original.plan was to make more videos going into more detail on each function. Need to get on to that!
This was indeed an eye opener to other perspectives to consider!

This was an interesting video as well!
I’ve never been a manager, but I would have to agree with the 5 steps of management
This is so interesting! I have always had an interest in management.
My husband was an IT manager for years. It definitely has peaks and valleys.
great video
The tutorial is so inspiring

I am very impressive with your video
I feel like my manager at the moment is severely lacking in #4 - Directing. He never holds meetings or communicates with us, the team, about what short term goals are to be expected from the firm.
That's normally the one managers do too much. But now you know where to hit the sweet spot for your own people

How does this 5 functions of mangement help you?
By realizing that all of my limited resources need careful management.
So being a manager doesn't necessarily mean you are managing people?
Exactly! You're a manager--you manage your time, your resources, your relationships, your goals, your priorities. You, Maddie, are a manager.
Great Video, but I thought the five funcions were
Planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, controlling
You're right. There are many different interpretations of the functions of management. If you Google four functions you see another take. It doesn't matter what descriptors we use, so long as we exercise the right discipline. So yes, your descriptors work great!
