Thank you for making this video!! I have done that border overland one way or another 6 times in my life & STILL been scammed on more than one occasion. Back in the day I searched the web for a good video like this to guide me with no luck so this one will come in handy for travelers to come for sure!
+TL Travel Yeah I hope it will help people! I felt so bad for the people on my bus that got scammed. Sorry to hear it's happened to you! They make it so easy to be confused, if someone didn't tell me about it, I wouldn't have known!
They really do. Especially when you don't realize how far you have to walk to get stamped in and out of each country. The first time I was there they got me with the Visa scam (rookie! lol) & then the first time I did the border going the other way by bus I had to change buses and they gave me no info. on where to go so some guy just spotted me and yelled that he his bus was the right bus & we were all on and moving they made us buy tickets again. Needless to say NOT the right bus lol
You are doing SUCH an awesome job at documenting your experience! This is literally my nightmare, being lost and confused in a foreign country! You handle it with such grace, which is why you are so fun to watch! Happy travels for sure! Love you
+Alyssa Anderson Thanks Billy! I mean, I do get a little freaked out sometimes, but I just remind myself that even though these things are new for me, this is normal life for other people, and so many other people are doing and have done the same thing as me! Thanks for your support as always. xoxoxo
i do recommend any of the dozens of 6 hour bus trips around Thailand from Mo Chit. They stop halfway for lunch as she did here. Sukhothai is pretty and peaceful. Great countryside out the window
Thank you for your video! Great job on documenting your travel experience. I think I will take the plane to save time when I do go to Cambodia t o Thailand this year..
Whenever I hear Cambodia I think of the Killing Grounds of the 70's. Flying would have been much more convenient but I don't ever see myself traveling to Asia. I hope to see what modern Cambodia is like in your videos. Its interesting to see how much the locals try to take advantage of tourist visiting their country. Bangkok looked more friendlier.
+Red Salmon I'm going to go to the killing fields tomorrow, looking forward to seeing more of the country. That whole part of Cambodia's history is so devastating and unfortunately still affects many people today.
We took that bus! The bathroom smell is true for all those buses, pick a seat towards the front for sure. The thing I liked most about the direct bus over the segments is that the direct bus keeps your luggage so you don't have to carry everything. You can read all our details and tips here: everythingbrisa.blogspot.com/2013/12/bangkok-to-siem-reap-overland-crossing.html
You are very aware. If i was there i would not be as aware, this video helped me a lot. It gave me so much knowledge on what sneaky things they can do. Thanks a lot !
Hi, Mari As I saw this video, I just realised that you are a very brave woman, I wish I have the strong motivation like you. :) I must say I really respect for what you decided and didn't wait to do it. Life is too short, do every thing you want is the best. So I will continue see your vlogs and support you as always. Cheer! Give Like 1,000 times!
This is so interesting, thanks for vlogging this part of your journey. I took a similar bus ride -- from KL to Singapore -- where we also had to get off the bus for passport control, but your experience looks a lot more complicated and (dare I say) shady. Good going, though! Looking forward to future vlogs.
I'm Mari obsessed lately have WATCHED stamped on all the recent videos, keep em' coming! Cambodia is high up on my list, unfortunately they don't have many international flight connections so the only option is almost to do as you did and go through Bangkok. Buses and people trying to rip you off goes hand in hand in Asia unfortunately, good to see you're on tour toes.
You're so brave to do all this alone! The whole bus trip seemed a bit dodgy (other than the food! Pretty good deal for how much the trip cost) and I wonder why they don't help you out with the border part of it. How confusing and scary when you're in a new country. Glad you made it! :)
+Kalliste I know the food seems like such a bonus because I feel like no bus I'm used to in the US would ever have that. It was weird that the people working on the bus just let it all happen, it makes me wonder if they were in on it too...
wow you're brave I would of freaked out and panicked going through the border how confusing plus it looked like no one there speaks any English . I love Your videos and it makes me want to go to a Thailand but not that whole bus thing lol
Glad you made it safely, I have done the Thai to Cambodia thing about 8 times. Much better to fly! But you do have to deal with the Bangkok airports which can be time consuming as well. I taught in Cambodia for about a year and a half, looking forward to your vlogs on it.
Love the video. I am planning the same trip this coming January England to Bangkok then onto cambodia by bus. Do I need a visa pror to the boarder crossing? Regards
Notice at 1:00 the bare feet of the passenger next to her. I have taken many Thai buses around Thailand and done several border runs to Cambodia for visa stamps. You should be prepared for some things
you haven't mentioned the 2 different visas 1 is a 30$ tourists visa 2 on is a ordinary visa is 35 to 50 $ it can be existed to 3_ 6 _ 12 months . the ordinary visa has a big E in the middle of it. the tourists visa has a big T in the middle of it
Hi Mari, do you know if you can extend you visa at the time of purchase? For instance, could I at the border crossing purchase an E class Cambodian visa that is valid for one month, and then immediately extend it for 3 months while I'm there to save me the hassle of doing it elsewhere? Please do respond if you read this, I would appreciate it a lot!
That's so awesome all of the various experiences you're having. I wonder do you ever get worried you'll need a bathroom and not be able to find one? Or that you'll need directions and no one will help you? Those would be my biggest conferns
+Brittney Lyn Those are things I think about, my not my biggest worries. As for bathrooms, I try to plan accordingly (and just hope for the best!) and I find there is always someone around who will help out if needed.
are you going back to Thailand after Cambodia? If, do you get the visa permission for 30 days for thailand again? The visa stuff is really confusing to me.. I'm glad that you let us be a part of your travels!
+GoBunt I know, the visa stuff is one of the most confusing thing about traveling! Yes, if I go back to Thailand, my visa will renew. Expats who live here will do border crossings for a day, just to extend their stay.
Aww I didn't know your name was short for Mariko, that's such a cute name! So scary how people try to scam you...good thing you did your research. I probably would've fallen for it haha. Quick question, do you already have your whole trip planned out (like the countries and hotels you're staying at)? Or do you just kind of plan it as you go?
+Here & Air Travels Aw thanks! It's Japanese. I just plan as I go. Once I book my transportation somewhere then I'll book a place to stay, at least for the first night. I find that I always get recommendations along the way, so it's good to talk to people to see what's best!
Thank you for this video!! Here is my question : so you can just go to Cambodia without a visa or anything and you can just buy it at the border?? How about if I flew there and didnt have a visa yet? Thaaaaanks!!
+Blanca Flores It completely depends on what type of travel you want to do, but I would say around $30 a day minimum is what you should budget. Some places in Southeast Asia could be much cheaper than that, and some could be more and it depends if you want to do a lot of activities, etc. Hope that helps!
yes. Never put anything of value down below. And, I recommend you "seal" or tape up your pack so that you don't get things put into it. I am aware of several foreigners getting nabbed and scammed with drug plants. No fantasy. I have been to thailand a dozen times and into cambodia a handful of times
Apparently, this is your first time border crossing. ''Taxi', ''Hotel'', ''Visa'', ''Where are you going'' get a simple answer ''NO''. Everyone has to make living. It's just the system is not well organized as in the Western nations. Mind you some western nations systems are also inscrutable. All you have to do is to pay what you have to legally. Even extra bits is pittance when you convert the amount into your own currency. You travel to these areas of the world where the cost of living is cheaper than your own country. Why do you have to be so money-minded? Your extra paying to the locals help their livelihood.
I love videos like this! I hate when people skip over the confusing parts of travels and it always leaves me wondering! Safe travels! X
+Living Lynsey So happy to help! I know, I'm always so interested in seeing this sort of stuff too!

Will be doing this trip very soon . Great Adventure !!! Thanks for sharing your experiences Mari 😊
Cheers! Enjoy your travels!
Going to be doing a lot of that! Thanks for showing us your experience!
+JP Goes Global You're welcome! So where's your first stop?
Chiang Mai. 11 days left!
+JP Goes Global Woo!! Chiang Mai is awesome!
i do recommend any of the dozens of 6 hour bus trips around Thailand from Mo Chit. They stop halfway for lunch as she did here. Sukhothai is pretty and peaceful. Great countryside out the window
Great video! Thinking I might go to Cambodia in December now. I'm looking forward to your videos from there.
Awesome! Yeah they should be up soon!

+Golden Wanderlust I did some research beforehand so I knew what to look for, otherwise I probably wouldn't have known either!
Hi, Mari

+Bo Stark Haha glad I can offer some good entertainment! Well at least Bangkok is a good city to visit as well!
You're so brave to do all this alone! The whole bus trip seemed a bit dodgy (other than the food! Pretty good deal for how much the trip cost) and I wonder why they don't help you out with the border part of it. How confusing and scary when you're in a new country. Glad you made it! :)

Love the video. I am planning the same trip this coming January England to Bangkok then onto cambodia by bus. Do I need a visa pror to the boarder crossing? Regards
Smart travel always Captain Mari!!!!!!
+A. Olaer Ahoy!
We "chickened out" and flew from Bangkok to Phnom Penh in order to avoid border confusion. Great vlog, Mari!
+frappuccino68 haha saved yourself many hours too! Thanks!
Notice at 1:00 the bare feet of the passenger next to her. I have taken many Thai buses around Thailand and done several border runs to Cambodia for visa stamps. You should be prepared for some things
The road was so bad from the Border to Siem Reap, also at the Border it was sketchy.
you haven't mentioned the 2 different visas
1 is a 30$ tourists visa

Good vids, plain and simple

Hi Mari, do you know if you can extend you visa at the time of purchase?

hi! planning to do the same route as you soon. how did you book your bus booking? online or is there an office in bangkok?
I booked it online. The link is in the description.
thank you! :)
Thank you for this video!! Here is my question : so you can just go to Cambodia without a visa or anything and you can just buy it at the border?? How about if I flew there and didnt have a visa yet? Thaaaaanks!!
Depends on your citizenship.
Driving left driving right.
about how much money would you think ill have to budget to take a 2month trip down there, based on your expirence ?
+Blanca Flores It completely depends on what type of travel you want to do, but I would say around $30 a day minimum is what you should budget. Some places in Southeast Asia could be much cheaper than that, and some could be more and it depends if you want to do a lot of activities, etc. Hope that helps!
are big backpack bags safe in the luggage compartments underneath the bus?
Yeah, they should be. But I'd recommend keeping all of your valuables with you inside the bus. And if you're worried, but a lock on your other bag.
yes. Never put anything of value down below. And, I recommend you "seal" or tape up your pack so that you don't get things put into it. I am aware of several foreigners getting nabbed and scammed with drug plants. No fantasy. I have been to thailand a dozen times and into cambodia a handful of times
+Mari Johnson thank good video.
good luck.mari around the world.

Where are you from ??
agree
I think I would pay the extra and fly instead of deal with that border nonsense.
As is I am a Cambodian I'm so sorry about tuk tuk 😅. We're poor our educated is not good as Thailand or VN and some other country 🙏🏼
មិនដឹងថាVietnam and Thai វាល្អត្រង់ណា
