  • Anton (Antonín, Antoine) Reicha (Rejcha) (26 February 1770 - 28 May 1836) was a Czech-born, later naturalized French composer. A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven, he is now best remembered for his substantial early contributions to the wind quintet literature and his role as teacher of pupils including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz and César Franck.
The young composer ran away from home when only ten years old, and was raised and educated in music by his paternal uncle Josef Reicha. When they moved to Bonn, Josef secured for his nephew a place playing violin in the Hofkapelle electoral orchestra alongside the young Beethoven on viola, but for Reicha this was not enough. He studied composition secretly, against his uncle's wishes, and entered the University of Bonn in 1789.
Between 1799 and 1801 he lived in Paris, trying to gain recognition as an opera composer, without success. In 1801 he moved on to Vienna, where he studied with Salieri and Albrechtsberger and produced his first important works. As he wrote in his memoirs, "The number of works I finished in Vienna is astonishing. Once started, my verve and imagination were indefatigable. Ideas came to me so rapidly it was often difficult to set them down without losing some of them. I always had a great penchant for doing the unusual in composition. When writing in an original vein, my creative faculties and spirit seemed keener than when following the precepts of my predecessors. "
In 1808 Reicha decided to move back to Paris. His fame as theorist and teacher increased steadily, and by 1817 most of his pupils became professors at the Conservatoire de Paris. Reicha stayed in Paris for the rest of his life. He became a naturalized citizen of his adopted country in 1829.
Much of Reicha's music remained unpublished and/or unperformed during the his life, and virtually all of it fell into obscurity after his death. This is partly explained by Reicha's own decisions he reflected on in his autobiography: "Many of my works have never been heard because of my aversion to seeking performances [...] I counted the time spent in such efforts as lost, and preferred to remain at my desk." Gracias! 🙏🏻⚜️

Thanks for this comment! Classical music has a so vastly wide range of dynamics, emotions, harmonic language, structural organization, orchestration... After you understand and appreciate classical music there is no going back, is there? 🙂
I am very glad that you like Antoine Reicha's music. I also like the music of his uncle, Josef Reicha.
If you want to know more about the two composers and other composers from that era, you can read "Antoine Reicha redécouvert"/"Catalogue de l'exposition", a laborious work edited by Jana Franková & François-Pierre Goy, Brno, 2021 , available in downloadable electronic edition.

Listening to Music of Antonin Reicha I imbibe its incredibly beautiful and healing assonances so that they become as if "mine". What an indescribable Bliss !!! (In addition - rarely-rarely one can find such a Face,as Antonin Reicha has, Face full of Human Noble Dignity !!! ) Tepper Michael.

This is so refreshing. It is so pleasurable to hear works for the very first time. Good music cannot remain obscure forever - the same thing almost befell Bach, Vivaldi, and Zelenka among so many others. Thank you so much 101.

Nice symphony, sounds like an earlier work from the 18th century.

Sounds like a student work by Beethoven, obviously to me Beethoven was influenced by Reicha. I think it is the emphasis on the rhythmic aspect of the themes or motifs.

Você está a confundir Beethoven com o Haydn do Sturm und Drang.
