DIY Custom Curtain Rod - Steel Pipe - 15 FEET LONG

  • We needed a very long, custom curtain rod (15 feet) for our space. We decided to make our own out of 3/4" black steel pipe which can be found at the hardware store. We broke it down into 3 sections (over each window) so we could work with it in our space. This DIY curtain rod is very sturdy, beautiful, and easy to put together. It gives the room an industrial, modern feel.

    Neat! Thanks for the video. Here's another option: I purchased the longest curtain rod kit from Bed Bath and Beyond Cambria Premier 88-144 inches and joined them together. The kit comes with two outer rods and one inner rod. They are easy to cut with a standard tubing cutter (for conduits and copper pipes). Cut the outer rods using the tubing cutter so the seams join where the rod supports will go. Use the inner rod to join two outer rods (wrap the inner rod in packaging tape so it is a snug fit inside the outer rods). Using this method will require 2 kits to cover your French doors and windows.

    Very well done! I'm hanging patio grommet-ed drapes and believe this may work for me, but am not sure how this will look on the wood beams I'm hanging the curtain between. I'm using chain inside the bottom seam to weigh the curtains down - the steel pipe will definitely hold up on each 11 feet span. Thanks for posting (oh, and the pup outside brought a smile to my face)

      I'm going to try making a curtain rod this week. Below is the parts she described in the video. I also searched online and found out that 1/4 inch diameter screws are needed to mount the flanges to the wall. I'm purchasing #14 x 1-1/2 in. pan head screws for my project. Hope this helps!
      3/4 in. Black Steel Pipe (Custom cut but can be purchased in pre-cut lengths.)
      3/4" FNPT Black Malleable Iron Cap
      1/2" FNPT Black Malleable Iron Floor Flange
      1" x 1/2" Black Malleable Reducing Tee with Female Threaded Fitting (1' x 1" x 1/2" - Left, Right, Top)
      1/2" x 2" NPT Threaded Black Pipe Nipple Sch 40
      1/2" FNPT Black Malleable Iron Floor Flange
      3/4" FNPT Black Malleable Iron Coupling

    Cool idea! I'm sick of my old 1960's curtain rods but the gap between windows are too narrow. So I'm thinking about running one contentious rod about all three windows...but the rod would need to be 19' long. Hard to find something that long.

      @@stephisimms thats great. I used anchors on my curtains, about 13 feet, and they continued to fail, even got the ones the ones that hold a ton of weight...I am currently making a pipe curtain rod like yours and going to mount with screws into the header!

    Love this! Looks great. My only question is that when I went to look at the black iron pipes at HD there was white numbers all down the side...does the acetone take that off, or did you place it so that wouldnt be seen? Thanks so much!

    • @DoItYourselfDivasMegSteph
      @DoItYourselfDivasMegSteph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jen Herbert oh interesting! Is there a way you can test that out before you buy it all? I don’t remember ours having white numbers. You could perhaps rotate the pipe so that the writing faces the wall.

    Also there seems to be some endings on each side that were also not mentioned. What was used for this?

    • @stephisimms
      @stephisimms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marisela Ruiz each house is different and will want couplings placed in specific locations depending on your windows. It’s all preference and custom so this was just showing you what was possible.
