Hey Rebecca, do us ALL a solid by telling the manufacturers of the world's curtains and drapes who sell stuff to Walmart and Target and TJMaxx and every other store that THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND 84 INCH WINDOWS!!! I believe THAT is the real problem. No matter where I go, and I mean EVERYWHERE I go, all of the drapes and curtains are only 84" long. I know that's "industry standard" but they've got to stop thinking that all of us in customer land WANT 84" window treatments....I know I sure don't!! I have bypassed some really cute curtains strictly because they were only 84". Like you, I like to take mine up to the ceiling - including my shower curtain! - because it just makes it look better. For 8 foot ceilings folks, that's 96 inches, for 9 foot ceilings, it's 108 inches. Makes a world of difference!

You are absolutely right a 100%. But Rebecca has been given us a solution. Buy an extra panel and add a band to them. Is going to take time for the curtains industry to take a leap. A lot of people are used to the standard size.

Rebecca, I don't follow you assiduously, but I really admire you. I like the contrast between you, a successful and capable businesswoman, who has chosen a certain level of sophistication in her life and her clientele, while at the same time, you haven't forgotten your humble origins and you are really compassionate and kind with your viewers. When drapes are almost pooling on floor, they get very dirty. I think an inch above the ground is more practical for real life family with kids, pets and open windows.

Great teacher! I've made that mistake - buying a darker panel against a white wall. I thought it would look rich and tie in with other fabrics in the room - but it makes the whole room dark. I also like those short rods that go sides of window as then no one is opening/closing them. They're just for decor/adding softness to the window. The window itself needs a shade/blinds that actually function for light control...and in the south, we NEED light control during summer days!....so funny ...as I continued to watch ....you said exactly THAT! Love that you said...panels are for your WALLS...not your WINDOWS!!!!

My husband and I worked to pay off our very dated home and now we have the budget to update things like curtains. Thanks for the wisdom. I replaced window treatments in two rooms that are open to each other, one was orange and gold and the other was brown and blue (came with the house) with a white sheers and light tan drapes all the way across, wow what a difference it made! Thank you kindly :)

Rebecca you inspired me! I signed up for design sessions a couple years ago when I did a first pass update on my home and I put roller shades on all my windows and floor to ceiling curtains on the WALLS😂 I really enjoyed the look but I didn't have the funds to do a fuller more luxurious pleated curtain... and I never got around to hemming what I had so I had a puddle 😂 plus my kids had their hands all over the linen curtains making them quite wrinkled. Well. You inspired me to launder all my linens, and buy some luxurious triple pleated ones for my main living space, using the old ones to add fullness in my bedroom treatments since they are the same fabric and color. My home already looks so much better!! Curtains MAKE the room.

Love the visual of the images and suggested corrections. Thanks for making the screen image of your computer larger in OUR screen image. That greatly helps. You might also consider using a pointer (even a pencil) instead of your hands so we can see the areas you're pointing out. That's not a comment on your hands!, but is a comment on being able to see more of the image itself. You might also consider putting pieces of paper to cover areas you want our eyes to "disregard." I've always loved the "draw on the photos" technique, too. Thanks for bringing that back in a few cases. All very interesting...

One of my main complaints about TV design shows, especially in the early days, were the skimpy cheap looking window treatments! Or no treatments at all! It hasn’t gotten much better, so it’s wonderful to see someone who is teaching others about the importance and benefits of proper window treatments!
My mom, a home economics teacher, let me contribute to the decorating of my room in our new home when I was eight. I choose lilac as the main color. We chose a pretty solid color bedspread, and managed to find fabric in 1 inch gingham checks which matched perfectly! This was used for the pinched pleat draperies which she made , and lined for stability, accent pillows, and as a skirt for her childhood desk, which became my dressing table. It was adorable, my favorite childhood bedroom, and done on budget! Even my much wealthier friends didn’t have rooms as cute as mine! This is when she taught me about “training” the pleats. You are the first designer/influencer I’ve seen who has mentioned this technique! It makes such a difference!
You would have liked what my mom did in their final home. My parents condo had a very large and long LR/DR with only one window, a slider, on the LR
end. She chose custom draperies made in pale blue silky slubbed fabric which were mounted on a simple brass contemporary rod placed at the ceiling, and the drapes went ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR! They covered the entire wall and looked very elegant at night when closed. During the day when opened, they fully stacked on both sides of the window, SYMETRICALLY! When we were dividing up my parent’s things, my siblings wanted to throw them out🤦🏼‍♀️😳, but I saved them, and hopefully will be able to use them in my next home, probably re-fashioned into panels. I’m very happy they’re so long!
I’m very happy to see that pinch pleated draperies are making a comeback, either as stationary panels, or full window coverings. Let’s hope that people follow your great advice on how to use and hang
them! They really do add the polish and finish to a great room!

Often people forget the importance of drapery lining. I have always preferred neutral slubbed linen drapes that were lined. The added weight offers elegant draping, privacy and an element of insulation in cooler or hotter weather. Of course I think pinch pleated drapes never go out of style. Another secret to fine window treatment is the use of weights in the lining of the drape. Thank you for continuing to inspire indoor decor designing!

Rebecca, you are a recent discovery and I am having so much fun and learning a lot. However, you are commenting on the fact that windowtreatments are often too short. I apoligize upfront for sounding like a Suzy Homemaker but they catch dust and are a pain to hoover up. And a lot of people have a pet, those hairs are so tricky to remove from curtain hems. This way ( the too short way ) is so much
    faster and easier to clean.

However not making them a functional piece was not part of my plan. I’m glad I watched this video. I’m in the process of updating a guest room. I now know the drapes and blinds are independent. What do you think about big louver Shutters. I live in CO and have them on every window in our house. I combine them with drapes. I have hung drapes almost to the ceiling and they "frame" the shutters so I can open and close the shutters. I also had hubby install dimmer switches recently for our pot lights so they really look nice with the shutters/drapes in the evening! With the cold weather here the shutters work as a great thermal barrier in the winter and with our high elevation they also work to keep the house cooler in the summer when I shut the south side of the house. They are UV and so far they have not faded. They were costly but we love them!

    Rebecca,
What I have found is many people where I live have 8" ceilings so 84" curtains are to short when you raise your rod higher (which I do) and the next size available are 94-96" which are to long. Custom curtains to some is to expensive. I would love for a manufacture to make 90"length curtains for those of us who have 8' ceilings. Sewing for me is not an option but I am going to try the stich witch so I can get better quality curtains.
I love watching you and Sharrah I have learned so so much. Thanks for sharing all your tips. I'm sorry about your dream house but I just love your house in Tulsa an oh that back yard is stunning.

Just discovered your site Rebecca. Love that you have actual photos that you can point out the mistakes and how to fix them! So many designers I see on TH-cam have the camera basically focused on them and you see very little if not fleeting photos of the design. I will be tuning in for more tutorials!

The first video I got to from this channel and it's funtastic! You do such a great thing taking real people's homes photos and explain what is wrong and telling how to fix it. You give great solutions for quite unique interiors. That is so much more then majority of bloggers do!
P.S.: my husband is one of those who thinks curtains should be moved around, we ended up me telling - you don't touch curtains, just don't

This came at the perfect time!! I have a very small 1920’s house. I have no option but to push my sofa against the wall with my front window. I never knew curtains shouldn’t be pulled back and forth!! We need privacy at night. My husband and I have been bickering about the curtains, he wants to have them above the couch!!! God, no!!! The answer is to get blinds. Thank you for helping my cause!

I signed up for the free trial of the Design Sessions thinking I could just get through it all and then cancel. I’m on a budget. But there’s so much there! You really go in-depth on these concepts, many sessions are two hours long. So, fine, I can afford $10 a month to learn how to make my house a home. Plus, I will be saving money buying things that won’t really look good any way or last long!

Thanks so much for the window treatment advice. Perfect timing in that we are having windows replaced this week and all treatments must be removed. Will be moving rod up, placing panels to the sides of the window and changing color to coordinate more with the walls. After that, will modify the patio door treatment (in kitchen to the left in picture) to obtain the need for cohesiveness with the living room window as pointed out. Thanks again! 10:49

The key is be ready to sew extra material because most curtains are 84 in height. Not let it be high waters. If you got great windows then you don’t need curtains. Great lesson and this was my first time watching.

Hi Rebecca, can you please advise us on how to properly design living room bay windows? Thanks so much for all your helpful tips!

  • @joansnively
    @joansnively 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I appreciate and agree with all your window treatment
ideas and comments. We have a large home with a generous size master bedroom. The bay window has lovely custom warm white sheer fabric blinds. As the room overlooks a nice pond, I have just allowed the blinds to be enough at the windows. There are no other windows in the room. As I am doing a few updates I would like to add stationary drapes and looking for the best way to accomplish that. And do I match the blinds or the walls (warm taupe) or…? I usually prefer neutral colors for things that have long life and pops of color with things that are more transient (pillows, decor etc,). Thank you very much for your suggestions! Joanie

There are great ideas to fix the issue area in the customer's home. It's hard to grasp the customers before and afters on the computer pictures.
Seeing the after picture completed in the home is more visually satisfying & inspiring along with the rearranging of the customer's wall pictures & furniture pieces as a room make over.

Another great video! For those of us who 8 ft from floor to ceiling it would be so nice if more manufacturers made panels at 90” rather than 84” which are too short or 96” which are too long. 90” gives enough space for a rod, header and for the panels to “kiss” the floor. Over the past few years I have changed up all my window treatments and what a difference it made! Linen or linen like is my best friend! I love your trick about “training” them. I also use paper towel or toilet paper tubes cut to 2” behind grommet type panels. Perfectly spaced and you can’t see them! 😊

Great timing on your video about window treatments. Our living/dining room combo had to get new curtains since the ones that were up were disintegrating. That's from years of east west sun damage. I had the hardest time finding curtains that provided a tie in with my gold/beige-y furniture. White, black and black white combo curtains made my furniture look dirty. I finally found a white curtain shot with a gold/beige-y subtle pattern that works. Now I'm trying to tie in the black in the room. And yes, all of my curtains except for one room go to the ceiling. I have had shades, blinds, and vertical window covers. I much prefer functioning sun blocking and room darkening curtains. They really cut the heat gain in our rooms. I am okay if they don't look perfect all of the time. They do what I want and need them to do. I appreciate seeing examples and hearing how to correct so something looks better.

The section on hidden storage brought back happy memories. My grandparent's farmhouse, which was built in the late 19th century had hidden storage under the staircase. It could be accessed two ways. One was by removing the second step. The other was through my grandparent's bedroom closet. We were rarely allowed to enter that way. I used to bump down those stairs on my bottom for fun. All of the curtains were lace. After washing and starching my grandmother would stretch them on a wooden frame with lots of nails to dry. Wicked thing that. The old farmhouse is still located about four miles southwest of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Welcome to Sooner Land.

Heat registers under window treatments are an issue here. The rising popularity of heat pumps has helped eliminate the use of baseboards under windows, which is great. Of course it created a whole 'nother problem with the indoor air handler units looking awful and breaking up the wall decor. Northerner problems. 😃 Enjoyed this video!

Thanks for this one, Rebecca. My home is MCM and i was planning out the living room for future renos. Now all i need is Lutron roller shades for privacy.
I think sometimes individuals get companies to install window treatments for their homes and 'deal' is for every window to be covered. Windows are so expensive, so why cover up the edges with treatments?!?
