I love Michael's voice and have seen many vids on YT that feature him. My, he certainly has entertained many different looks over the years. Maybe, good naturedly of course, he should be called "The Chameleon of Tenors". 😁
Yes the is the most fantastic performance with Angela mead, Dimitri Korchak, Marie angeHubeaux, Enea Scala at tce in Paris with Alberto Zedda, i was at this performance and i watched it again and again Balena in man del figlio...He is still amazing.My big regret last year barbiere senza michael in Orange, my 2 gran son came for the first time to hear an opera in France and they were extremly ☹️, i hope a next time ....

Here's the kicker: Michael is naturally a baritone, but he learned how to sing tenor through tons of hard work. Look up Michael Spyre vocal range. You should see a thumb nail with him sitting in front of a piano. (I forgot the title of the video lol)

OMG! Best performance of Cessa today! I'm listening to all modern tenors and Michael still is the best in this repertoire! All these Anduaga, Sekgapane, Rocha, Angelini, Hotea, Gatell and others are not even near to this level of Rossinian style and technique. Just compare, their versions of Cessa are also available on TH-cam.
Yes, Spyres is wonderful and perhaps much better than all the others you name. But he still has nowhere near the agility, authority, or charisma of Juan Diego Flórez, Lawrence Brownlee, or Javier Camarena. In my view the Big Three are in another league.
@@jamesnickoloff6692 You say this, and it might well be true, but Spyres can also do things that the three of them cannot - whn it comes to Rossini especially, he fills a diffeent niche to your 'big three'
@@ollybowes7542 Thanks, Oliver. Could you point me to an example of such a Spyres performance, one where he surpasses those three? I am not wedded to my favorites and would be happy to add a Fourth!
Angelini is excellent vocally and stylistically. Spyres is just a different type of voice, and also does it very well.

He made his debut at the Met in 2020. In the 2022-2023 season he will star in Idomeneo and Norma.

@@nicolimperi9758 , se non hai mai sentito dal vivo Spyres non ti rendi conto. Blake era bravo ma con un timbro orribile. Flore sembra una bambina isterica. Catarina bellissimo timbro e dal vivo mi fece molto effetto. Ma Spires ha bel timbro, estensione enorme, grande volume e grande classe e puo' interpretare e cantare tutto. Blake oltre al Rossini pirotecnico e un po di Mozart non poteva andare. Poco adatto a Bellini, per nulla a Donizetti. Verdi e Puccini non ne parliamo.

Simple, Spyers use head voice in the upper part of the register, a valid and historical technique in belcanto. But, sometimes, when he sings to much faster or an abrupt change of register, his wonderful and so many times smooth and melted shift from one register to another is near to a dangerous break, as one can hear here.
Poor unfortunately, might even be worse than Florez which I didn’t think was possible

@@Bumblebeebeebee Zweifel, weil Sie es nicht hören, oder Zweifel, weil ich für Ihren Geschmack ein wenig direkt daher schreibe? Sollte es ersteres sein, empfehle ich, mal für ein Jahr täglich für einige Stunden Aufnahmen von Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Max Lorenz, Völker, Rosvaenge und den zahlreichen anderen großen Tenören zu studieren. Dann kommen die Zweifel an Spyres Tenor-Qualität von ganz allein ;-) Sollte es letzteres sein, möchte ich mich in aller Form für den barschen Umgangston entschuldigen, stehe jedoch inhaltlich weiter hinter dem Kommentar.

Ich bin es tatsächlich etwas müde, dass bei vielen gegenwärtigen Opernsängern immer wieder die "Sänger der Vergangenheit waren viel besser"-Karte gespielt wird. In manchen Fällen war das sicher so, aber eben nicht in allen und vor allem ist das keine Rechtfertigung, verdienten und anerkannten Künstlern die Daseinsberechtigung abzusprechen. Insbesondere finde ich es schwierig, auch noch fachübergreifend zu verdammen. Tatsächlich möchte ich weder Völker noch DelMonaco in diesem Fach hören. Ich bin wahrlich kein Tenorfetischist, die meisten finde ich uninteressant, damals wie heute. Aber Spyres konnte ich zum Beispiel live hören und musste die Leistung und Kunstfertigkeit einfach neidlos anerkennen. Die Stimme ist groß, die Höhe mühelos und durchdringend, dazu kommt eine hohe Musikalität und interpretatorische Intelligenz. Das war als Gesamtpaket enorm beeindruckend. Ich für meinen Teil kann absolut gar nicht mit DelMonaco oder DiStefano anfangen, ich finde die Aufnahmen uninteressant bis kitschig. Deswegen würde ich den beiden aber nicht absprechen, Opernsänger zu sein. Man sollte sich bei der Bewertung von Künstlern sehr bewusst sein, wo der Grat zwischen Geschmackssache und Fakt verläuft. Nichts für ungut und einen angenehmen Tag!
Papa Geno auch ich bedanke mich für die ausführliche und anregende Antwort. Es liegt offenbar ein Missverständnis vor, wenn meine Kritik auf eine Frage des Geschmacks heruntergebrochen wird.
Die aufgelisteten Tenöre haben alle eins gemeinsam: sie singen Vokal, ganz egal ob lyrisches, dramatisches Fach, große Stimme, kleine Stimme, Piano Register, Skandier Register. Das erklingen eines großen und klaren Vokals im Raum (nicht Sprech-Level Vokal wie heute vor allem im Liedgesang generell Usus, sondern der echte Gesangs-Vokal, der aus dem offenen Hals kommt), ist Grundlage jeglichen klassischen Gesanges. Das ist ein Fakt und keine Frage des Geschmacks, denn die Komponisten bis einschließlich Richard Strauss haben ihre Werke für Sänger dieser (italienischen) Gesangstechnik komponiert.
Die professionellen Sänger, die heutzutage „im Vokal“ singen, sind leider an einer Hand abzuzählen (im Tenorfach wäre z.B. Martin Muehle zu nennen, Sopran Saioa Hernandez). Spyres gehört nicht dazu. Er mag Sie durch Äußerlichkeiten wie Lautstärke, Tonhöhen etc. beeindrucken, der Laut, der zu hören ist, entspricht allerdings eher einem Schwa, auch Zentralvokal genannt. Stellen Sie sich einen 100-Meter Sprinter vor, der, anstatt normal zu sprinten, die Strecke auf einem Bein hüpft. Er mag die tollste einbeinige Hüpftechnik der Welt entwickeln, die sogar Zuschauer begeistert, doch er wird auf diesem Wege nie ein professioneller 100-Meter Sprinter sein. Ebenso erreicht Spyres seine Tenortöne (Vergleich: das Ziel) durch abklemmen des Stimmbandes. Er ist damit heutzutage natürlich nicht der einzige und mag das Ganze auch besser kaschieren als andere, es ändert aber nichts daran, dass dies keine legitime Tenorstimme im Opernfach ist.
Ich habe keine Freude daran, heutige Opernsänger zu diffamieren. Mir geht es darum, dass die Menschen wieder ein geschulteres Ohr für klassischen Gesang entwickeln.
Um nochmal auf das Thema Geschmack zurückzukommen: der Geschmack, der wirklich Gewicht hat, ist der des Komponisten. Wir haben Aufnahmen von den Sängern, die Verdis und Puccinis Uraufführungen gesungen haben und die von ihnen geschätzt wurden. Sie alle singen nach italienischer Technik Vokal. Del Monaco wurde von Umberto Giordano als „mein Chenier“ bezeichnet. Es ist Ihr gutes Recht ihn uninteressant zu finden, aber hat das dann noch etwas mit ihm zu tun, oder haben Sie vielleicht ein generelles Problem mit italienischem Verismo, so wie er von seinen Komponisten gedacht ist? Very nicely done, even polished, great breath control. Still I can’t help but notice that the voice in a part of the range is manufactured, it looses all volume from time to time. For all uniqueness of his voice, the timbre is not special. Emotional impact for me was zero. Overall, not even close to Florez, he owns Rossini, period.
