It’s so funny to me that in the 80s and 90s, men found big, curly hair super sexy… but now it’s not “trendy” so it’s a turn off somehow 🙄🤷‍♀️😂 I have naturally curly hair but it’s been straightened - heat tools and/or chemical straightening - since I was about 14 (I’m 31). I still straighten it purely because it’s easier to manage HOWEVER, over lockdown I did my best to bring out what’s left of the curl pattern.
The response was polar opposites lol. Women LOVED it and wanted me to keep it. All the men in my life (and judging by social media reaction too) hated it 🙄😂🤦🏼‍♀️
It’s just more proof that what we find sexy and attractive is absolutely decided by trends: we’re told what to like 🤦🏼‍♀️

I agree we should bring it back, and I really like that look on some of those women, such as Nicole Kidman.
But I think the way it should be done is for those who influence and shape the way we see beauty as a culture to feature a variety of different natural hair types. It's fun to do a drastically different kind of look with your hair if you want to. It's different when it feels like you have to in order to be accepted.
Also, it's very damaging to your hair to go through perming or straightening. To get it done right without destroying your hair is very expensive. For example, in the 1990s, there was a kind of perm called a spiral perm. Even then, it cost easily $500 if you had a decently long, thick head of hair. So, it becomes a class issue as well.
The amount of time those with the unfavored hair types have to spend to get themselves looking like whatever is the accepted way to look at that moment is itself a problem.
The chemicals needed and damage to the environment are a problem as well.

Perms were really popular, a lot of them didn't have natural curls. I have noticed perms coming back, I think they have improved over time. I feel like almost every woman in her fifties has a perm horror story from the eighties. They used to look so bad for the first few weeks, until they relaxed a little, and then by the time you knew how to manage your new curls, they would start to grow out. I bleached my hair for like fifteen years, and recently grew out my natural color. I discovered I have really wavy hair when I'm not processing it to death, but I can't figure out how to manage it and make it look good so I always end up flatironing it

As someone who grew up in the 80s and has naturally curly-wavy hair, there are many reasons why it was popular then. Super straight hair was big in the 70s, and hair like fashion trends changes about every 7-10 years (faster now). Also, bc it was so popular at that time, alot of people who had curly hair had it bc of a perm, though not the actors portrayed here. Finally, particularly in the 90s, the natural hair and minimal makeup was in. Kindof like the (imo) WAY overdone makeup with 18 shades of contour are popular now.
I do think embracing your natural hair has started to come back though.

It took me years to find the products that work for me, sadly some women are just settling on any "curly" hair product, when texture and thickness and curl type needs. I use products for black hair because white curly hair products drys my hair out so much. I haven't used shampoo in 5 years either, just conditioner, yes u can clean ur hair qnd scalp with just conditioners. Just make sure to massage your scalp deeply and rinse roots and condition again.
