The look on Junuh's face after Bagger says "I've been with you all along" gives me chills. Even young Hardy realizes at that point that Bagger is so much more than a caddy; he is a watchful guardian angel to help Junuh overcome his personal demons. Powerful scene.
They aren't his demons. What veterans deal with is usually bringing home a suitcase full of shit from war that was never theirs to begin with, getting them to put that suitcase down and leave it behind once in for all is the tough part. Getting them to understand that it was never their suitcase to begin with is the hard part. You don't have to keep carrying all that extra weight around.
Aint a soul on this entire Earth aint got a burden to carry he dont understand. You aint alone in that. But you been carrying this one long enough. Time to go on, lay it down.
if you can truly understand this scene, it's utterly profound. Bagger ain't a gaurdian angel........ He's God Himself....that's the secret......He's been with us our whole lives........hoping, helping, through heartache and blessing to bring us closer to Himself.
Which "god"? There have been over 3,500 deities created by man in all of recorded human history, across six of the seven continents. Can you narrow it down a little?
I love this movie. I've seen it over and over again. The layers of philosophy are amazing. I always interpreted Bagger Vance as either an angel or his caddy from before the war. A classic.
What really sent shivers down my spine was when Bagger Vance said "You ain't alone. I'm right here with you. I've been here all along." That part pretty well sums up who Bagger Vance represents. Very spiritual and very powerful.
I think what I view this is as, sometimes we get in the way of ourselves. When the things in life we think are so far away, so hard to achieve. Yet if you just believe in yourself and do what you know how to do, things will work out and the target is actually much easier to hit than you first believed.
When he says ,”I’ve been here all along”, is the moment we realize he is god (in terms of the symbolism). It’s a remarkable moment in a beautiful film.
An absolutely wonderful, beautiful, thoughtful movie. Great cinematography and music, superbly acted by the cast and directed by Mr Redford. Thank you for such a great story, beautifully told.
Life. This movie parallels the journey of life as told by playing golf. Your swing is what YOU were meant to do, a game that can't be won only played is LIFE. We've all experienced life at its hardest, we all have the choice to keep pushing and come out the other side. This movie is my favorite interpretation of LIFE through a different telling. Kind of like how different religions can tell the same story with different words and characters. Love this story.
Probaly the best movie which had ever been made... When I watched this before I golfed... I played the best round I ever played in my whole life just 270 Yards drivers and I were just 13 years old.
I agree 100%. The musics is amazing. But its what both the characters are saying to each other which is more important. When you watch and listen with soft eyes and ears you realise that this movie has nothing to do with golf. Anyway that's just my honest opinion. But yes I love the soundtrack.
I grew up with this movie, and am just rediscovering it as an adult, like an old sweet memory... and I can't _believe_ that, come to find out, it was super overlooked and almost no one knows this movie!! The soundtrack is even out of print! What the heck! It's one of the most beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring films I can ever remember seeing! And a GREAT performance from Damon especially, in the middle of the rise of his career, just after Good Will Hunting and Saving Private Ryan, and just before Finding Forrester and Oceans Eleven! How did all THOSE great movies become classics, and this one didn't??? I don't get it.
im a golfer and have never seen this movie..... that shot is truly terrifying for anyone of us lol.... i looked at that and was "ohhhh hellll noooo!!!!!"
You need to see this movie. I truly believe almost all of life's mysteries and keys can be exemplified by the game of golf and football. Two extremely different sports that both create perfect analogies to the varying aspects of life from very different angles, that are both equally true. This is one of those movies that you won't truly be able to appreciate and comprehend unless you've lived through tragedy, which most everyone does, eventually.
Somehow people don't realize that this is a modern interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita. Even the names of the characters are similar. Bagger Vance is not a 'magic negro' as I've heard some describe him. He is God (or an angel) who has come to help Junuh rid himself of his demons so he can move forward with his life doing what he was born to do. This is the central theme of the original Bhagavad Gita.
I didn't get this film the first time I saw it. I watched it half heartedly on a long haul flight and just thought " Yawn" and then one day I was alone, it was on tv and I couldn't believe the layers and how I so totally missed it all. A favourite now and I turn to this scene a lot.
I enjoyed the movie and appreciated its spirituality. I assumed Bagger Vance was an angel or angelic being using the guise of what Junuh needs (a volunteer caddy). But he’s also there to help Hardy, too. Later I discovered it’s retold Bhaghavad Gita.
Great movie as it had everything. How one can lose believe in one's self but also you can find yourself again even through the roughed of circumstances also it felt like baggar was a guardian angel 😇 which made the movie so good that even in our darkest moments someone is looking out for us.
It me getting older and being out of the Army to truly understand these scene full force. The insinuation is that Bagger was in the Argonne forest during WWI, the battle Belleaux Wood. This was one of the most brutal battles US forces endured, the woods brings that back for Bagger, hence his mental state while looking for the ball.
This one of the top 5 all-time clips of sports movie history. I've never played golf and hate it as a sport, but,,,,, it's about more than that!!!! Beautiful. Where you always been....
This movie sparked my interest in golf and was one of the main influences that led me to start playing. I've been "finding my place in the field" ever since.
My favorite movie scene ever and so under-rated. Also, when Baggar (W. Smith) leaves toward the end and Junoh thinks he needs him still, but then realizes that there are others in his life..and also that Baggar never has or will really leave him. Didn't get the HIgher Power connection until the second time I saw the movie. Just thought Baggar was an inspirational caddy & Junoh a guy who just needed some quidance. We all do..and it's there!!
This movie was great! This scene and the scene with Bobby Jones where he gets his swings back are awesome. I love how in this movie, Will Smith is an guardian angel like figure. At the end where the kid *when he's a grandpa* gets the heart attack and he's walking towards Beggar almost like Beggar is bringing him into heaven
The key scene of the movie, in which all is revealed with words of great power and comfort. Whether Bagger is God or a divine emissary, he is there to help Junuh regain the life he is meant to lead. "You ain't alone. I'm right here with you. I've been here all along." Those words bring tears to my eyes every time I watch this scene. Don't we all want that reassurance?
All-time favorite clips....the world needs to realize in life, that its not how hard you can get hit, but how much you can take...but to jus keep moving forward! Thats how WINNING IS DONE!!!
My favorite lines from tree golf scene: No no sir it was just a moment ago." "Play the game - The one that only you were meant to play" Now is the time Junah!" And he takes the shot-And he lands the Shot!... WoW,!! My next fav...Hey Bagger...you are one hell of a catti !
We just watched this movie today in my Media Analysis class :) I love this scene SO SO MUCH!! I was hoping I could come on here and find it. So thank you very much for posting this! :)
Saying this to a veteran who has seen war and has haunted him just feels different. “You been carrying this one long enough, time to go on, lay it down, you got a choice, you can stop or you can start….walking, right back where you always been”
SUch a powerful movie and scene, Bagger was excatly the guardian angel that Junuh needed at the right time to help him overcome those demons that haunted him.
I don't get to play much golf these days. Work and life events get in the way. But when i do, I think about these scenes and take inspiration from them to find the best swing I can muster
I agree. And what I love is that, pretty much at no point in the movie does bagger ever really tell junnuh what to do. he paints a picture of metaphors and pretty much allows junnuh to find his way. Great stuff.
this movie is about far more than golf, its about life.. golf is the tool used to get the message over... the finding of inner peace and harmony in the most unlikely of places... at times when you need it most.. what a beautiful film, ive seen non better...
There's something in the "why don't you just loosen up your grip" that hits differently in the context. All about how Junuh is holding on too tightly to the past
a game that can't be won...only played...reminds me of life
Some do say that golf is a microcosm of life.
That's the message
Anyone with PTSD/Panic Disorder knows what this feels like.
The look on Junuh's face after Bagger says "I've been with you all along" gives me chills. Even young Hardy realizes at that point that Bagger is so much more than a caddy; he is a watchful guardian angel to help Junuh overcome his personal demons. Powerful scene.
Bagger Vance in Bagavad Gita in a Hindu script. Trying to boost the fight in Arjuna, Rannolph Junuh. (RJuna).
They aren't his demons. @@terrancethomas9792 yes! 🙂
Thank you
That's so beautiful
I always thought that Bagger was something Spiritual in this movie. I truly believe this scene solidified my belief!!
We all need a Bagger Vance to show up unexpectedly in our lives.
I think we all need to be Bagger Vance to someone as well.

I watch this movie whenever I lose my self. No more perfect lines, or more perfect music.
That's exactly what I do and have done, for 14 years! It never fails, the music swells, my heart lifts and all is well in the world.
I totally understand.
this is the best film ever made, a huge call but im willing to make it!
IT CHANGED MY LIFE!
One of the most epic moments in the history of movies. I seriously wanna cry when I watch this scene!
Damn straight!!
I did…
This was such a beautiful movie. Will Smith played the best guardian angel ever.
Amazing thing is this is a golf movie that has absolutely nothing to do with golf. A true masterpiece in storytelling right here.
It’s about a persons life.
I love this movie. I've seen it over and over again. The layers of philosophy are amazing. I always interpreted Bagger Vance as either an angel or his caddy from before the war. A classic.
Robert Cournoyer Definitely an angel, it's the only plausible explanation for why he appears to Hardy at the end of the movie.
Portrayal is that of the almighty, hence the “I’ve been here all along.”
An angel.
Actually his character is inspired from Lord Krishna
Do some Research on it 😊
Not an angel. It's the Bhagavad Gita. Bagger is Krishna, and Junuh is Arjuna.
One of my all time favorite scenes in any movie.

Agreed! Life changing
Jai Courvoisier I know what my attraction is; and, to what shifts my perspective. Please waste your bitter time elsewhere.
I Think this is my favorite scene of this wonderful movie. Such powerful wisdom in such concise beautiful dialogue.
" Golf is a game that can't be won, only played!" Kinda like life, huh?
What really sent shivers down my spine was when Bagger Vance said "You ain't alone. I'm right here with you. I've been here all along."
That part pretty well sums up who Bagger Vance represents. Very spiritual and very powerful.

Great movie! And the book is 5x greater!
Every single word in this scene is gold - it’s one of those go-to scenes when you’re having “one of those days” and just need a reminder ❤️❤️❤️
