Don Johnson is the perfect antagonist for Kevin Costner in this movie. Don is so smooth you actually want to root for him a lot of the time. His final line to Roy is priceless at the US Open.

Don Johnson plays a first class heel in this movie but you kinda have to love him in this scene. Costner let his mouth put him into this situation and Johnson took advantage of his wording perfectly. Legend

I love and use the line “it never even occurred to me to try” all the time. Me and my golfing buddies have a rule whoever has the first tincup quote drinks for free. Can’t be a forced line though. Has to be relevant to the situation.

I like how this is a metaphor for both their playing styles. Guys like Roy will always try to show off first and usually under estimate their opponents. The other guy knows how to be creative and play smart. Love this movie.

But guys like Roy have a place in golf I think. He was the Longshot before it was cool. He takes trick shots because he knows they're physically possible. I wish golf had more of that. People willing to take drops for a mulligan. For that 1 in a million. That impossible hole in one, in impossible odds. the guy at the masters, he's in the top 10, he's on the last high risk high reward scenario, he knows he can do it. Exactly what Tin Cup does

I think this was based on a true story. I don't remember the players, but the story was that on a par 3 somewhere, there was a huge wind blowing from the hole to the tee. Everyone was having their ball blow back to them after they teed off until someone came up and drew his putter. Instead of lofting it in the wind, he putted it down the cart path and it proceeded to roll down the path and onto the green. He got off with a birdie.
I wish I could remember the details...

Reminds me of my longest drive I ever had. It was a 440 yard par four and I drove it down to the green. Was middle of a drought, and the only grass was on the fairways, pretty much dirt and dead grass. Drive came scorching out low a few feet above the ground hit the fairway and scooted through to the dirt. Thankfully it was so low to ground so it more or less headed toward the downhill to the green instead of flying out of bounds. Had it not been for the drought, it would of been about a 100 yard worm burning disaster.

I also remember a scene for the short lived ESPN series "Playmakers," where they did something similar to this scene in which a hot shot QB with a great arm got into a confrontation with his West Coast Offensive Coordinator who was a prick and sucked as a player. The two showed who can throw and land the ball the farthest, QB went first and threw it far, long and hard, and OC threw into the back of a moving golf cart past the other football, showing that strength is good but smart was better.

Not sure if I would call this being smart or being weak. All Johnson's character proved was that he was scared to accept the real challenge. So, instead of taking the challenge, he copped out. It was just an easy way out of the challenge. Win or lose, taking the challenge will earn you more respect. Or, simply walking away works, also. Who cares what people think. I suppose it depends on your personality. Johnson knew he would lose, though, so he took the easy way out. His point was proven but I think many people can learn from this and to be certain to set the ground rules before the game begins, or people pull this cop out crap. lol Great scene, though. Excellent movie!

Fun fact: Don was first choice to play Eliot Ness in the Untouchables. He passed as he’d just played one of the most iconic cops in entertainment history in Miami Vice. Kevin took the role and the rest is history…For the record, I think DJ is possibly the only actor of that era that could of played the Ness role as well as, if not better than Costner. Maybe Harrison Ford as well….

It's a subtle element to the scene, but when David does the about face and lines his shot up with that long, hard, straight stretch of road Roy takes a long look and then ... drops his head knowing he's about to lose the bet ... and his beloved car. He knew before David drew back to swing. 😋

@@hisdudeness8328 I think you missed my point. My point was *NOT* that David broke a rule that was never put into effect. My point was that Roy recognized how David had outplayed him long before David drew back to swing. My point was that David never said the shot had to go down the driving range and so he snookered Roy ... with style. Your comment only echoed what I had already indicated. No new information added. But that's what a member of the Department of Redundancy Department does, I guess.

@@hisdudeness8328 I don't think anyone was confused by the baseless understanding that David said, "Whomever hits it the furthest down the driving range," and then flaunted the rule he established by hitting it down the road. That setup spoils the punchline and ruins the joke. No one thought that. Your comment merely (re)stated the obvious and was completely unnecessary as it added no new information to the situation. I was calling attention to the fact that Roy knew he was beat long before David drew back to swing *BECAUSE* he didn't realize that David never said anything about the driving range. Pay attention before you shoot your mouth off. 🙄

The best part of this scene was cut because the clip was taken from television. As they're watching the ball bounce down the road "earl", on of Roy's friends says off camera, "Sh@t, he hit down the fu*ckn' road, didn't he?"
God I love this movie. I actually get bummed when the end credits role. They should have made a second one.

If Costner, after getting the bet was the one really in charge, when offered the club, he'd say "Nah, I'm such a sport, I'll even let you go first!"
When the opponent has to go first, chicanery is seldom done.
