Fun Fact: There actually was a weekend late night horror movie TV program called Fright Night, which aired in Los Angeles in the 1970s, hosted by actor Larry Vincent, who starred as its host, "Sinister Seymour." Shortly after his death, the show was brought back in 1981 as Elvira's Movie Macabre, starring Cassandra Peterson as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

Not the best in Hammer Films Dracula series; but a fun entry none the less!!
I’m a huge fan of Hammer Horror. In 2007, I had the great honour of meeting Sir Christopher Lee & got to speak with him at length about his career with Hammer Films; & the now legendary film that is, The Wicker Man.

Vampires are actually able to shape shift into numerous animals. The animals are usually associated with the night, nocturnal animals like wolves, bats, cats, rats and etc. They can also turn into mist or fog. And the reason Jerry is always eating apples and whatnot is because part of his bat DNA is a fruit bat. 🙂

There is a sequel, which I think is very underrated. It is definitely worth watching. As for the holy water, it wasn't holy water, it was tap water, when Peter Vincent was on the phone with Dandrige, and said he the father bless it himself, he was joking around with Dandrige. That is why Dandrige agreed to drink it. I love this movie, I watch every year at Halloween.

It's interesting how the movie shifts from a comedic horror to full on serious horror about halfway in. It has elements of comedy but doesn't skimp on the terror, which is difficult to do without being jarring, but in this case it works. It's a great homage to Hammer Horror.

Roddy McDowell is a veteran of science fiction and horror, Jen. 😁He was in films like Planet of the Apes and The Legend of Hell House(which I highly recommend), and the TV movie Night Gallery. His character, Peter Vincent, is inspired by the old horror movie actors of the 1960s like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, who starred in the old Hammer Studios horror films. His name is a combination of Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, who appeared in horror films by American International, the American equivalent of Hammer Studios.

There is a sequel Fright Night Part 2 (1988). The director Tom Holland would later direct Child's Play and actor Chris Sarandon who did Jerry Dandridge in this movie would also do Detective Mike Norris in Child's Play. The special effects in this movie were done by Richard Edlund who also did the special effects for Ghostbusters (1984). Nice reaction to this well made movie. Just some FYI:
    1) Peter Vincent honored the "Reborn Christian Agreement". Dandrige held the water by the fire checking to make certain it was just tap water before drinking it.
    2) In Vampire Lore, Vampires are able to change into many forms including Bats, Wolves, and Fog.
    3) Dandrige was eating apples to represent being a "Fruit Bat Offshoot" of a Vampire.
    4) Dandrige couldn't heal from Charley's pencil attack because the wood splinters needed removing first. When Peter Vincent removed the stake from Evil Ed, there were no splinters so Ed was able to heal.

    Fun Vampire Facts;
    - Depending on the lore, vampires have the ability to shape shift into bats, wolves, or even mist/fog.
    - Vampires have no reflection in mirrors because they have no soul (An old superstition would have the mirrors in a household turned to the walls, or covered so the soul of the departed did not become trapped).
    - Vampires cannot cross running water.
    - All religious symbology is at least offensive to vampires, if not harmful.

I've also heard the mirror thing explained as they aren't truly there. They exist in hell and the vampires body in the real world is just a projection.(think something like a more solid ghost, which is also why they can shape shift) Which is why they can't truly be killed only their body destroyed.

A few scenes back when they were talking to him over the phone and he said that he wouldn't do Holy water, Peter said to tell him that it's just ordinary tap water. All he has to do is just sip it. But I think you were talking durring that part so you must not have heard him say that. And the only reason they went there in the first place was just to humor Charlie. None of them believed that the guy was a vampire. Not until Peter held up that mirror and couldn't see the guys reflection. When he was whistling when he was going into Charlie's room, that was as old song called "Strangers In The Night". I think that was a pretty appropriate song for what he was doing. It wasn't the looks that was keeping Amy there. Vampire's have the power of mass hypnosis just by looking at you if they choose to use it. The reason that Peter and Amy looked familiar to you might be because the actress who played Amy a few years later played on the sitcom called "Married With Children". And the guy Peter played in the original movie "Planet Of The Apes". He played the main ape named "Cornelius". He's also appeared quite a few other movies. But I enjoyed watching it again because you had great reactions to it. Thanks.

Hi Jen, Glad you got to this one, you should check out the sequel. As a long time horror fan I can tell you most stories and games vampires can turn into bats, mist and wolves at will. Werewolves (usually) stand on two legs not four. Vampires usually have minions to watch over them, humans under their charm, even werewolves in some stories. Also you missed something during the watch. Peter Vincent says it will be tap water not real holly water when they are talking to him on the phone. He (the vampire) also held the vial up to the fire as it he could tell by that if it was holly water.

The cross burnt on to Ed's forehead which also disappears after he dies is a nod to what happens to Lucy in the first Hammer Horror movie of Dracula.
The multiple clocks in Jerry's house that chime at the same time is a nod to the 1960 film The Time Machine as the time traveller George also has multiple clocks in his house.

I was hoping someone would react to this movie. I've pit it in a few comment sections as a suggestion during Halloween season.
This is one of my favorites. I don't usually do a lot of scary movies, but this one I love. It's scary, sexy, and funny.
Me and my brother still quote lines from this movie.
    "YOU'RE SO COOL, BREWSTER!"
"MMM MMM. HIS DINNER'S IN THE OVEN."
Amy's mouth reveal was the scariest thing. It freaked me out. Oh, btw, that actress may look familiar to you if you've ever watched the Married with Children show. She played Darcy.
Roddy McDowell was an A list actor from years ago. He was in the original Planet of the Apes movie, and countless others.
The Vampire, Jerry, played in the movie PRINCESS BRIDE. Maybe that's where you've seen him before.
Oh, you should see Andy McDowell in OVERBOARD with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It's so good...if you like 80's romcoms.
A few more suggestions: THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, the actor playing Charlie was in a really good movie that came out some years ago.
It's a mystery thriller with Hillary Swank and Idris Elba,q called THE REAPING. So freaking good and suspenseful.

@Reel Reviews With Jen! Yes Jerry's daytime protector was a Zombie. The reason that Eddie "Evil" came back to Life is because Peter took the Stake out of his heart to use against Jerry. Removing the Stake brings the Vampire back to Life in all legends unless you Beheaded the Vampire. So Ed came back to Life as a Vampire but after Jerry was finally killed Ed became human again as is the traditional lore. This is 1 of the Best 80s movies of All-Time. It's a Fun Horror film and this movie was Rated R

With regard to the holy water, I think the implication was (from Peter Vincent saying "it's just ordinary tap water" earlier) that he lied and the water wasn't actually blessed, because at that point Peter Vincent was going through the motions to get paid, and didn't really believe in vampires in the first place.

@@pathatfield2543 Oh, I'm not mad. I'm well aware that Peter Vincent's words were inaccurate as far as the slasher movie genre went. lol I've complained about that myself. It was probably indicative of the fact that Peter had probably never even seen a slasher and was just going off of what he'd heard about them. But Fright Night was always meant to be a clever meta satire of the horror movie genre, and that line was mostly a playful jab at slasher movies.

Werewolves and vampires used to be sorta one in the same. Dracula could turn into wolves, bats, and "mist". The howling wolf at the start is an oblique reference to Bela Lugosis Dracula.. where a wolf howls.and he says "the children of the night... what music they make". The apple thing I think was Chris Sarrandon's choice... it's like a vestigal bat thing.

If u go back to when they are talking to Jerry about the test, Peter says " It's just ordinary tap water, all he has to do is sip it."That was why it didn't work. Vampires can change into bats, wolves, fog, and rats. If u watch Bram Stoker's Dracula, u can see Dracula change into plenty of things. The reason why Ed came back is because Peter removed the stake from his chest. There is a direct sequel and a Remake. I think u would like both. About the apple -thing: I read that wasn't originally into the script of the movie, it was an idea of Chris Sarandon: He thought that, in order to hide his true identity, a vampire should eat an apple or some other fresh fruit to "wash away" the smell of the blood after he just killed someone. Especially because most of the times he uses seduction to trick his victims... technically, he uses fruit as some sort of tooth-paste... 🙂The director liked the idea and decided to keep it into the final cut. 🙂I am not 100% sure this is true but I like to think it is! 🙂
