@@bfdidc6604 It's kind of hard to find. I randomly bought a DVD of it in a pawn shop 15 years ago which is how I happen to have it. I have heard rumors of a 4K release later this year.
Not a classic vampire movie, but 'Lifeforce' was pretty freaking cool. Underrated 80s sci-fi/horror flick with a trippy plot and great soundtrack.
“You’re so cool, Brewster!” Such a classic. Also R.I.P. Roddy McDowall.
Fright Night is an 80s staple, and I always thought it was criminally underrated. But I think it's grown a cult following over time (obviously enough to spawn a remake) - as people realized it was like a snapshot of a vibe and a time. Movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc. overshadowed Fright Night, which went a slightly more camp route, but I loved when movies took a more tongue-in-cheek approach. Another classic from the era in that vein (pun intended?) was Creepshow. Maybe consider adding that one to your list of must-sees! (Love watching you guys watch stuff, keep up the great work!)

Fright Night did well balancing the campiness. Like it was camp, but didn't overdo it to the point of it being annoyingly cheesy.
Roddy McDowell as Peter Vincent was my favorite part of this film, he had been a film star for 45 years by the time he made this, he was the child star of How Green Is My Valley and Lassie Come Home back in the 40s. Unlike many child stars he became a co star in many great films, he was Octavian in Cleopatra opposite Taylor and Burton, and was best know as the star of both rhe original Planet of the Apes films, and the spin off TV series.
Peter(Cushing)Vincent(Price) in tribute 😀
He had part of the Statue Of Liberty set from Planet Of The Apes in his garden along with the bench he and Elizabeth Taylor filmed a scene on in the Lassie movie they did together.
He was a youngster in My Friend Flicka about him befriending a horse, Mr. Hallam
@@frankgesuele6298 Thanks, Mr. Gesuele. I had no idea how they came up with his name for the movie. I saw it with my mom and aunt (her twin sis) back in summer of '85 when I was 15 in a double feature with Pee Wee's Big Adventure😂lol
This was one of my favorite movies from childhood. I was 10 when this came out. I saw it on VHS and cable. I loved the effects and make up. It had all of the vampire lore mixed in like the different creatures and just plain mist a vampire could become. Evil Ed's death scene is genuinely sad. I like Evil Ed's actor's performance a lot myself.
I was a little older than you when it came out but not old enough to see it in the theater. The video store wasn't so picky about it ao some friends and I rented it one night and really liked it.
I was 9 when I saw it in the cinema.. They let kids in back then sometimes lol, but I diid not get in The Terminator screening, just saw that on Betamax..
I have never seen it in the cinema, but my parents allowed me to rent once we had a VCR, but I saw it on cable before that.
I love the soundtrack and the movie itself is one of my favs ever. Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandridge is so cool and brilliant in the role. Thanks for reacting to it.
Fun fact, the bat at the end of the movie was made for the original Ghostbusters movie but took it out because they thought it was to scary for children.
This is one of my favorite movies, it’s so much fun and Roddy McDowell was a icon. Check out Near Dark for another great 80’s vampire flick.👍

A react to 'Lifeforce' might be interesting. Mid-80s alien vampire sci-fi/horror goodness. Overlooked a bit, but I watched it over and over as a kid. Man, that soundtrack is strong as well.

HELL YES! This is my all time favorite horror film! Roddy McDowall was so good as Peter Vincent. Fun fact, Vincent Price was supposed to play that role (hence the homage to his name) but he was too sick and couldn’t do it. He saw it later and loved the movie! Everyone on set had nothing but lovely things to say about working with Roddy. The bat puppet that Jerry turns into as well was also originally gonna be used on Ghostbusters for the library scene but it was deemed too scary, so the FX company shelved it and it was used for Fright Night a year later!
I rate this 8/10. As an 80s kid, I wasn’t allowed to watch many scary movies but I remember always hearing the title come up, which created a mystique for me. I grew up on a cul-de-sac with a bunch of kids my age, and we were all obsessed with vampires. Finally watched this and loved it. This and Lost Boys were watched on a regular basis and have a lot of childhood nostalgia for me.
"I hate cul-de-sacs. There's only one way out, and the people are weird." Tell me you also liked The Burbs, lol.

Evil Ed was the personification of an ostracized nerd who has a strong personality but is still very vulnerable inside. I think Ed's and Charlie's friendship makes sense. Two nerdy guys who become friends because of similar general social life circumstances and their having similar taste in horror. Charlie is just normal enough to be able to have a normal girlfriend. They in some ways didn't really like each other, but again due to circumstances decided to stay friends. I can understand that.
In hindsight, Evil Ed's character also feels further informed by the things Stephen Geoffreys had to do with his career after roles for him in films like this dried up.
@@AngelofMusic04 There was a lot of subtext to Ed's performance, especially in that alleyway scene.
Stephen Geoffreys IMDB page is a wild ride. I also remember him from 976-Evil and Heaven Help Us.
@@generativejamessgamess1179Absolutely, With the charming Heaven Help Us and derivitive Fraternity Vacation the same year as this, then the critically acclaimed At Close Range the next year and a couple of years later his starring role in 976-Evil. The 80's brought a somewhat diverse range of roles or at least opportunities . Then he went into porn in the 90's.
Evil Ed was basically a good guy but ostracised by society.
Such a fun vampire comedy horror film! It's also very quotable as well.
I love this movie so much. It's a rare film where the more you watch it, the richer the story becomes. You start to notice small lines said here and there that really gives depth to the world everyone inhabits, and it separates this specific movie from most other horror/vampire/generic slasher movies overall. Plus, the story is so well crafted because every member of this cast actually became good friends with one another and took a lot of personal care for everyone else as they were making it. For instance, the actor who plays the main vampire (Chris Sarrandon) came up with the idea that he didn't want to just be a monster attacking at random, and so he wanted the hero's girlfriend to be someone who the vampire could obsess over because she looked exactly like an older lover of his from the past. Everyone loved the idea, so it was added in to great effect. You can even appreciate how this plot was set up so early when Jerry first shows up in Charlie's room in the beginning. He offered not to kill the kid if he would just forget about him - "I can give you something I don't have. A choice." He was basically he saying he has to kill if he wants to live, and he's not looking to kill anyone he doesn't have to - including Charlie and his mother. But once he met that girlfriend, it wasn't about killing Charlie anymore as much as it was about messing with him (and probably killing him later). You actually gain an underlying sympathy for the vampire that made the viewer more invested on what he was doing and if he was going to be able to do it...
But there's so much more to know with little nuggets of information like that being everywhere. Yet, most important and talked about in regards to this movie is how the screenwriter/director created this in the early 80's when AIDS was rampant and very much an unknown disease that was affecting mostly the gay community. He admits, today, that he never knew he was writing (essentially) a story that had a lot of gay themes in it when fans pointed it out to him. The vampire's bodyguard kinda being positioned in weird ways when he's attending to Jerry, Evil Ed being "the odd one out" of the group who's essentially "Gay Ed" that the vampire can seduce easily because he knows Ed is different, how when you become a vampire your body changes more pleasurably (Evil Ed "coming out of the closet" with a new persona, Amy having her body morph into a voluptuous model-type), etc. There are some great fan write ups to read if you ever come back to this movie that will just make you appreciate what everyone did to make it truly special. It's a perfect love letter to the older Hammer vampire movies of the 1950's, it respects the vampire lore, it creates its own lore that doesn't effect or ruin the older rules, and you can tell just how much fun everyone is having making it at the time. Even the cover art you're using in this review video is actually the cover art for a giant documentary disc that was semi-recently created about the entire franchise - and it has TONS of information in it =) ...(God bless anyone for reading all of this, lol)

I personally think the sequel is a lot of fun as well, and it does have Charlie and Peter Vincent, so it's a continuation of their story.
I haven’t seen it in 30 or so years & can’t remember much about it, but I do recall thinking the sequel was pretty good.
I didn't enjoy the sequel nearly as much as the original, but it is surely great to see Charlie and Peter Vincent back.

Fright Night actually has a sequel, Fright Night Part 2 (1988). And surprisingly it's quite good. It seems few people know about it. It continues the story of Charley and Peter Vincent. I'd highly recommend it
I actua;;y think it's the only horror sequel that's just as good if not better than the original (I don't count Aliens since it's more Sci-Fi).

Like a lot of 80's horror, the "young" actors are passable, but the veteran actors bring their A game. Chris Sarandon again plays such a great villain, really having a great time while remaining menacing. McDowall is always great but in particular he plays the fumbling hero so well.
The lost boys is my favorite vampire franchise out there. Cheesy, real vampire, gore.
the 80's music or the "techno-music" you guys keep talking about is why i love these 80's movies so much. Fright Night for me is one of those cases, where the (realtivly unknown) sequel is actually better than the orignal, eventhough it has the same beats, but it is just so much more fun and keeps it up with the great special effects, the tone and the fun of the original. the first one is 7/10 for me while the part 2 is 8/10

I saw this in the cinema when it first came out and it blew me away! Loved it. Great performances and great effects. Roddy Mcdowall was superb as the Peter Cushing stand in, as was Chris Sarandon as the very charismatic Jerry. So you can imagine how disappointed I was when I saw the remake. Dear god that was pants! lol
What did you think about part 2 from 1988?

Fright Night was on TV a lot from the mid to late 80's and i really liked it.
Chris Sarrandon is menacing and does a good job as a ruthless vampire also, a lot of humor in it.
The love interest of Charley is played by Amanda Bearst who played Marcy in the now cult tv show Married with Children.

I’m always bummed when evil bites the dust. stephen geoffreys’ portrayal is SO outcast 80’s teen, i love it! everybody’s chemistry is off the charts. one of my horror comedy fav’s. ❤️
My favorite vampire movie of all time. I used to read the comics as a kid and my cousin and I used to pretend to be Peter ad Charlie hunting vampires. So glad you guys watched this.
The actor who plays the leading Vampire in this movie is the same actor who played the Detective in the original Child's Play.
Same writer/director, too.
He played prince humperdink in the princess bride too.

During the pandemic, and to raise money in the US for the presidential election, the cast came back to do a live script reading of this on Zoom. I’ve seen these done for other movies but this was by far the best. It was clear that everybody involved still had a great appreciation for the film. The Evil Ed delivery was still spot on too!

1988's fright night part 2 is great also. Well, I think it is. Many will tell you it's rhubarb, but that's something you can decide.
I did hear that the director from the first movie is wanting to make his sequel (part 2 was a different director but same cast) that he never got to do. Same cast as the original (minus Roddy McDowell obviously).
I hope the studio picks it up because it sounds fantastic.

I’m so freaking old! I saw Fright Night opening weekend, in a giant theater in Times Square, when it was still seedy. That’s where my brother and our friends, would always go for fun and a steak meal after. I was 16!
Such a good movie. Yes, Midnight Mass is awesome. Slow as eff, but awesome.
You should review Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Blob and War of the Worlds (1953).

Chris Sarandon was nominated for an Oscar for his brilliant performance in Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. you should definitely check it out!
Great choice, great review! The thing about Evil Ed is that--if you were ever bullied in school--you completely get Ed and understand why he goes with Jerry when Jerry says "They won't pick on you anymore...or beat you up. I'll see to that. All you have to do is take my hand." I wish the film gave a little more backstory to Ed's character, but it's still a solid, entertaining horror romp and the practical effects are priceless!

Classic classic classic! The 80 had a lot of good Vampire movies, this is one of my favorites..
My most favorite 80s vampire movie however, is “Near Dark”(1987)
I think it’s on shudder right now, other than that it’s really really hard to find, but it’s unlike any other vampire movies Iv ever seen, so I highly recommend it!

I loved this movie. I was 16 when it came out and I kept watching it. Must be 30 years ago since I've seen it. People Under the Stairs might be a good choice for a reaction.

The VFX were done by Richard Edlund and his company Boss Film Studios as well as the Vampire Make Up Effects were done by Steve Johnson.
I grew up with the original and still enjoyed the remake, but haven’t rewatched it like the original. The first Jerry (Chris Sarandon) has a cameo in the remake, which was fun to see!
I was disappointed in the original Fright Night sequel so I view the remake not as a replacement but as a sequel.
I saw this in 1985 in the theater and it was awesome! Such a good film and so 80's. It brings me back to my high school years every time. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your great content!

Saw the Title, paused video, sought out film, watched said film (crazy how I never got around to this until now), un-paused video. Just gonna say, the special effects for the wolf transformation are freakin awesome! and I loved the variety of special effects in general all throughout this one; absolutely loved it. I wish people would do more of physical fx now a'days ( I mean could you imagine the possibilities!)
Fun fact this incredible film's equally incredible score was composed by Brad Fidel who also created the score and iconic theme for the original Terminator film!
I, too, saw it first run and it was great! The score was by Brad Feidel, who also did Terminator. Things to look for: Jerry Dandridge is always eating fruit (including the apple's core!), because Chris Sarandon and the director agreed it would be interesting, because some bats eat only fruit. There is also a (only possible, according to Chris Sarandon) homo-erotic subtext. Jerry's assistant kneeling before him to bandage his hand, Jerry's relationship with Evil Ed, Etc. There was apparently more of that in the original conception, but the studio nixed it. I am always amazed by Roddy McDowall's acting ability. His reaction with tears to the death of Evil Ed, when they each filmed their part of the scene at different times. Amazing. I always loved his work. And Chris Sarandon . .Great actors. You never catch them acting. The sequel is also good in the way the second Ghostbusters movie is, in relation to the first. Derivative, but fun. Also, the wide-screen cinematography of the second is excellent.
There was a thing in horror in the 80s where many films mixed horror and humor to varying degrees. See "Night of the Creeps", "An American Werewolf in London", "The Night of the Comet", "Return of the Living Dead", etc. That time was a lot of fun! We need more classic film theatres!
Can remember queueing for this at the cinema when it came out in '86. It's like an 80s throwback to vintage horror flicks of the 50s & 60s - cinema staff even handed out a pack of luminous 'fright night' fangs to everyone going in 🤣 kept mine for ages after. It's a corny/classic 80s flick with some memorable scenes, fantastic contemporary effects and some great lines - and the talented Roddy McDowall is a bonus!
This came out when I was 14 and it shocked me how entertaining it was. Another comment was talking about Creepshow, I was wondering if they have seen Creepshow, I hope not, I would like to see that on this channel.

The best way to think of the relationship between Charlie and Ed isn’t that they’re friends, but instead outcasts that skirt the same circles.
Love this film! When I was a kid, I didn’t understand why the couple were making out on the floor when the bed was available. My older sister explained that was to hide from any parental figure should they unexpectedly enter the room. Never say movies can’t be teaching tools.

It's still my favourite vampire movie, to this day. I first saw it on ITV one night, back in 1992, and was riveted. It's also great fun!
The director Tom Holland (not that one!), also previously wrote the script for Psycho 2. A terrific sequel to the original, if you haven’t seen it yet. He also wrote and directed Child’s Play.
Amanda Bearse, that plays Amy in this, was in the US tv series Married with Children. She also has done lots of standup but mainly has done lots of tv series over the years. She's married to Carrie Schenken, not famous or anything, but Schenken was a camera technician and met Bearse while working on the same show in 2010.
A great 80's horror flick is THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW (1988). Based on actual events. Voodoo priests turning people into living zombies
Fun little fact. The actor who played the vampire in this movie was also in the remake. He was a character who get killed when he gets out of his car while the other character is on the road.
A fantastic reaction to a 80's vampire classic, the sequel is also very good & worth watching.

I was so happy that you watched this! I grew up watching this with my Dad (him telling me when to close my eyes of course). There is a home video of me somewhere saying "Welcome..to...Fwight...Night!" I didn't realize how scary it was until I was older and watched it on my own. Especially Amy's vampire face in the third act. I was like: "I didn't remember that part!"
Roddy McDowall who plays Peter Vincent in Fright Night also is best known for portraying Cornelius and Caesar in the original Planet of the Apes film series as seeing him with out his ape shut was a blast!

This is easily my favorite 80s vampire film, Lost Boys and Near Dark are also classics but I think Fright Night's clear reverence of classic vampire movies is what puts it over the top. It also feels a lot more creative with its filmmaking, like when we see Jerry's shadow turning into a bat at the end and Amy dancing with herself in the club's mirror, just to name a couple moments
You really have to understand, this movie was released in 1985, it's got the mid eighties written ALL over it, I saw it first in the theatre as a 16 year old kid, blew me away, loved it. It's my favourite vampire movie and an annual event every Halloween night.

You are right it WAS an amazing film to see in cinemas in 1985. I was ahigh school kid back then and loved this film.
I loved this movie as a kid. The second one was just as good to me with the additions it made. Definitely one of the 80s vampire staples like The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Vamp, and Return to Salem's Lot. But I also loved the even cheesier ones like: My Best Friend is a Vampire, Rockula, and Sundown: a Vampire in Retreat, lol.
The synthesizer music was common in the 80s because it was relatively new and more importantly it was cheap. No copyright and licensing issues either. If a sequel to a low-budget original was made it usually had the money for better music.
Also a lot of 80s bands were using it so it may also have been meant to have some appeal to younger audiences, but it being cheap was probably the main reason.

There is a sequel Fright Night, Part 2 released in 1988, a remake set in Las Vegas, released in 2010 with Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, David Tennant, and Imogen Poots and a remake/sequel called Fright Night 2: The New Blood, in 2013, this time, taking place in Romania.

He was “awww’ing” at Evil Ed dying because he got stabbed while being a wolf and then had to be reminded that he’s a VAMPIRE 🤣

Always cracked me up that the worst part of Evil getting turned into a vampire was that it somehow managed to make him even more annoying
Staking a vampire doesn't kill it, it merely paralyzes it. If you wanna be super technical in mythology you have to drive the stake through it's body into the ground to pin it, then cut off their head as only decapitiation is fatal.
When Peter removed the stake, Evil Ed revived.
In Re: Evil Ed in the window at the end -- Peter did kill him with the stake, but that only works for as long as the stake remains (which is why you're supposed to decapitate the vampire after staking them); once Peter removed the stake, Ed would have revived after a little while had passed, which is why he's around again at the end.
Oh! And the electric guitar in the soundtrack is actually an electric violin. Just throwing that out there.
Yes, I would travel to a cinema for older movies. I saw this when it came out. I loved it.

Jerry Dandrige was played by Chris Sarandon, he was the voice of Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Peter Vincent was played by Roddy McDowall who started his career at the age of 9 and continued up until his death at age 70 in 1998. He's also in all four of the Planet of the Ape movies and then when it became a TV series he was in that as well. He's been in a gazillion movies, but another movie one to check where he had a small part was The Poseidon Adventure, with quite a few big stars in that as well.

I love Fright Night, watch it everytime it's on tv. I think the cast do regular reunions, they did a re enactment of the whole movie quite recently on zoom, think you can find it on TH-cam. Chris Sarandon is gorgeous, he can drink my blood any day lol. Did you notice Amy's magnificent bosom after she became a vampire? That was a practical effect too x
I, like many others, DID see this in the cinemas when it came out. It wasn't just head and shoulders above the usual horror films at the time, it was waist, knees and toes better. It also gave Roddy McDowall the best part he'd had in ages. Peter Vincent is a great movie creation and even better performance.
McDowall, for the record, was a former child actor-- the first "Lassie" kid in LASSIE COME HOME-- who acted constantly from childhood to death, becoming especially a TV mainstay everywhere (on Columbo, on Carol Burnett's show, as Bookworm on the original Batman, on Wonder Woman, on every episodic, variety and comedy show of the 70s, 80s & 90s you can fathom). And that's to say nothing of THE PLANET OF THE APES...
This is one of the the great horror comedies of all time. It's up there with American Werewolf in London. A true classic.
I saw a lot of movies at the theatre in 1985. I had turned 14 the year before, and I could now get into a whole lot of new movies. It coincided nicely with where sci-fi and practical effects were at. And, as you inferred, yes, the experience was special.
This one has always been one of my favorites from that decade. Its up there with other vampire classics like The Lost Boys and Near Dark.
Also!! might I make a request? Maybe continue the John Carpenter series? You've already done quite a few from him (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Christine, and They Live) But Movies like "Escape From New York, Starman, Big Trouble In Little China, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness" I would love to see you guys react to and talk about. I was in high school when this film came out...my girl friend was all over me during it. She kept grabbing me and scratching me with her nails. Of course, she did it at every key moment. At the time, I was annoyed because I was trying to watch the movie...but now when I look back it was one of those awesome teenage moments.
