This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I'm very glad someone finally made a reaction to this movie! I love that classic line in this movie where Gary Busey says sarcastically "What would I shoot with a silver bullet"? And the store clerk says "How bout a werewolf"? ....I love it! 😆

This story has an interesting origin. If I'm not mistaken, King was making a special 'horror calendar', teamed up with an amazing horror comic book artist. Each month contained a new chapter, of another werewolf kill (for that month's full moon), teamed with the artist's rendering of the attack. After the calendar's year passed, King re-wrote the disjointed attacks into a more traditional narrative, and published it, still containing the illustrations. It's a great book, and as I recall, pretty dern close to the movie.

I read the story and I liked Gary Busey's performance in this because I think he captured what the character of the uncle is all about. He's disreputable and irresponsible yet he's the reason they survive. The story and movie are interesting to me because this story is a good example of how sometimes Stephen King uses a creature to tell a story that isn't really about the creature. This isn't a werewolf movie. There is a werewolf in it but that's not the point.

Thanks for the reaction video. I grew up with this movie, and it feels very ignored. In Cycle of the Werewolf it goes by months, each month he claims anew victim, or something to that nature.
He picked flowers for the church vase, he claims that they were the most beautiful flowers he had ever seen, but by the time he returned to Tarkers Mills the flowers had 🥀. Thus casting a celestial chant turning him into a werewolf.
I use to like to think when I was a child scared out of my mind watching this, that the devil, or some sort of demon turned him into the werewolf. Therefore he became a manifestation of his demons. And it would direct him to the victims or souls he was supposed to claim.

Gary Busey is an interesting character. In the 70s, he starred in "Big Wednesday" and was Oscar-nominated for "The Buddy Holly Story". Then he went kind of minor, reportedly hitting drugs and booze, his biggest appearance being as main villain Mr. Joshua in "Lethal Weapon". In 1988, he had a horrendous accident that almost killed him. He´s never fully recovered. He now makes ultra-low budget nutfests (you´d enjoy a few of them) and reality shows (the insane "I´m With Busey" and underwhelming "Gary Busey: Pet Judge"). A few years ago, he won Celebrity Big Brother UK, and famously drove Meat Loaf insane on Celebrity Apprentice.

Fun Fact: A modern dance actor was hired to perform the stunts inside the suit but producer Dino de Laurentiis was unhappy with his performance and demanded a change. As a result, Everett McGill, who played Reverend Lester Lowe in human form, wound up acting out most of the scenes in the werewolf suit and was credited with a dual role.

Fun Fact: The Werewolf was designed by Carlo Rambaldi, who also designed Kong for the 1976 King Kong remake, the Alien in the 1979 movie Alien based on H.R. Geiger's drawings, and the Sandworms in Dune. Stephen King reportedly wanted the werewolf to look "plain," as to not resemble other werewolves in previous movies like The Howling and An American Werewolf In London, with the end result looking more like a black bear. Producer Dino De Laurentiis was apparently not happy with the design, but King and Rambaldi refused to change it.

In the book, it is never explained how Reverend Lowe became a werewolf, and Lowe himself has no idea, but he suspects that it had something to do with some flowers he picked at a cemetery on Sunshine Hill months prior to his first transformation. He went to put them in vases at the church vestry, but they turned black and died before he could finish the relatively quick job. He has no reason to pinpoint this event as the beginning of his curse, but he believes that this was the beginning of the events.

In the book, Cycle of the Werewolf, Reverend Lowe comes to realize that he is the werewolf after having awakened with fresh blood on his fingernails and mouth. He also discovers his clothes are missing or sometimes finds scratches and bruises, which appear to have come from running through the woods. His nightmare about his churchgoers turning into werewolves is further evidence of his curse, but he doesn't fully realize he's the werewolf until July 5, when he awakens with his left eye blasted out.

Another deviation from the book is that the woman, Stella, in the book is a lonely, virginal seamstress who is somewhat overweight, and whose business is beginning to fail. On Valentine’s Day in February, she sends herself cards from 1980s heartthrobs and longs for a lover. She sees the werewolf watching her from outside her window and lets it in, believing she is dreaming. The werewolf pounces on her and kills Stella in her bed. The movie changes her to a woman who got pregnant by her boyfriend who doesn't want to marry her. Her character was a lot sadder and more tragic in the book.

Yep, broadcast TV stations used to go off the air at like 1am until the early morning news shows and would play the national anthem to sign off. Once cable channels came around and aired 24/7 then broadcast TV slowly started filling that former down time with infomercials and the like. I was born in 1982 and remember broadcast stations going off maybe into the early 1990s.

Silver Bullet was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, but the town Tarker's Mills is set in Maine. The film is fairly faithful to the original story, but was structured more like a slasher. The werewolf effects in part were done by Carlo Rambaldi, who designed ET and the monster form of Dagoth from Conan the Destroyer.

I remember going "Anne Shirley just said a swear oooooooooooo!" the first time I saw Silver Bullet.
Red is one of those rare Stephen King characters who really loves the kids he's taking care of and he *listens* to them. He's a fuckup, sure, but he's not malicious or outright dismissive like most adults when it comes to something that kids are worried about. He can see that Marty and Jane are genuinely, seriously frightened. If these kids are scared, he'll try to fix whatever it is, even if he doesn't quite believe them.
Gary Busey is so brilliant in this. If only he never got in that accident and fractured his skull. As someone who also has brain damage, seeing his acting before and after-I know how your personality and comprehension can be altered and how frustrated you get when you fuck up; even though you can't help it.

This movie takes me back for sure. My brother was a big fan of this movie when I was a kid so we watched it quite a few times. I never found it very scary, but as werewolf and vampire movies go I like this one. This also takes me back to when I was a kid and only had 3 tv channels and at midnight or 1am the national anthem would play, then the station would be off the air for the night.

Back in the day tv wasn't 24/7 . Around 2 or 3 in the morning it would cut off til like 5 am and before it cut off they would play the national anthem so it's a cool way for a movie to say it was late asf without saying it or showing a clock .

Once again, Jen, the book is not told from Jane's perspective at all. In the book, Marty's sister is named Kate, not Jane, and she's mostly a secondary supporting character. The movie greatly increases her role in the story. The book is mostly told from the third person narrative, as well as from Marty's perspective, depending on the chapter and the month of the year. The chapters that deal with Marty are told from Marty's perspective, and the chapters/months that Marty is not mentioned in are told from the perspective of other characters, including the victims.

Like I said before, the book, Cycle of the Werewolf, takes place over the course of an entire year, starting in January and ending in December, with each chapter taking place during each month. The movie condenses the story to a few months during the Spring and Summer, and ending on Halloween.

On certain channels after normal viewing hours, the channel would just show the American flag and play the National Anthem for hours or until regular programming started again. Not sure when it began, but it happened quite a bit with local programming in the 80s.

Drunk guy came into bar where Stephen King was. He tried having it put as a 12 month wolf calender. Stephen King adapted it into a film. Cycle of the Wolf is the actual title. How they find out who wolf was actually was from trick r treating on Halloween (eye patch). Sister wasn't as close to Marty in book.

  • @44excalibur

Fun Fact: Silver bullets are actually not as good as lead bullets. Lead has a 10% higher density than silver, so a silver bullet will have a little less mass than a lead bullet of identical dimensions. Pure silver is less malleable than lead and falls between lead and copper in terms of hardness and shear modulus. A silver bullet would work best at close range, as it would be slower and less accurate, although it would give better penetration due to its higher shear modulus and will not deform as much as a lead bullet. Silver would accept the rifling on the inside of gun barrels that allows bullets to spiral as they travel, but not as well as lead bullets.

Werewolves are often used as a metaphor for alcoholism, something Stephen King touches on a lot in his books. Werewolves definitely mean to kill when they attack; however, survivors that have been attacked are usually turned into werewolves themselves, (see American Werewolf In London,) and that can be used to create a narrative based around the concept of for survivors guilt.
I don’t think the film is good but I think Gary Busey and Corey Haim’s chemistry is great and they make the film worth leaving on.
I recommend reading The Shining and then the sequel Doctor Sleep. You’ll be able to compare both to their film adaptations.
Also, grab some of King’s short story collections, Different Seasons, (Apt Pupil, Shawshank Redemption, and Stand By Me are adaptions that come from this collection); Skeleton Crew, (The Mist & The Raft are adaptions that come from this collection, The Raft a short film in the Creepshow anthologies); Night Shift, (Children Of The Corn & The Mangler are adaptions that come from this collection. Also, it contains Jerusalem’s Lot, which is tied to Salem’s Lot and the recent series Chapelwaite, staring Adrien Brody, is based on.) I don’t recommend start with The Dark Tower series, though it’s good.

The character of Marty's girlfriend, Tammy, does not exist in the book, and neither does her alcoholic and abusive father. The scene where the werewolf attacks her father in a greenhouse is entirely created for the movie and does not happen at all in the book. A lot of scenes that happened in the book do not happen in the movie, and a lot of scenes and characters were created for the movie that do not happen in the book. I recommend reading the book to see how different the movie actually is from the book.

  • @44excalibur
    @44excalibur 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good guess about the Reverend, Jen. In the book, Stephen King does a much better job of concealing the werewolf's identity until the final chapters of the book. Marty discovers the identity of the werewolf when he goes out trick-or-treating on Halloween with his uncle, and when they stop at the Reverend's house, the reverend answers the door and Marty sees that the Reverend is wearing an eye patch, on the same side as the eye of the Werewolf that Marty blew out with his firecrackers on the Fourth of July.

This movie is sooooo good. There are so many good lines in it it's not even funny. A submarine with screen doors, He's gonna make lemonade in his pants, The hard boys meet Reverend Werewolf. I laughed as much as I was terrified the first time I saw this.
Also, if you want some ambiance..I watched this for the first time at my stepmom's house in the middle of nowhere at midnight. The house had bars on the windows, it sat by itself out in the country on a hill under a pine forest, and it was a full moon.
