    Disclaimer: It is NOT a recommended technique so do this at your own risks, as failure to use proper procedures and precautions could lead to expensive and costly damage to the PCM, climate control board, relay or fuse box and the engine electrical systems and components.
    To understand more about this technique, please watch the following video:
    • Jumping Relay To Start... | Jumping Relay To Start AC Compressor Clutch | How Does It Work? And Why You Shouldn't Use Paper Clip
    DIY recharging kits tell you to recharge through the low pressure port while the compressor is engaged. But if the system is low on refrigerant, the clutch will never engage. This is a catch 22.
    How To Manually Engage AC Compressor Clutch: The Easiest Methods
    Knowing how to manually engage AC compressor clutch will help you skip a visit to the mechanic. Plus, you should also know how to examine the clutch to find out if it is faulty or not.
    Set all air conditioning controls to the MAX before kicking off the engine. Check the front side of the clutch to examine its condition. Also, find out whether the clutch and the pulley are spinning. If only the pulley is rotating, the compressor clutch is having an issue, which could be stemming from several sources - a blown fuse, bad clutch oil, low-pressure lockout, or an open wire in the oil.
    Before starting the next step of diagnosis, you should know that a low-pressure switch can create problems with the compressor clutch’s relay in some car models. The system’s computer keeps the relay grounded but it can go on and off due to the bad switch. A careful inspection of the system and its components will help you to pinpoint the source of trouble.
    In this step, you have to detach the connector cable from clutch oil. Keep it safely away from all other components. Use a digital voltmeter to measure the ground and voltage of the battery at the detached connector cable.
    What is the most common reason for an air conditioning compressor not to engage? Low level of refrigerant. When the coolant level in the system goes down, the low-pressure switch does not allow the compressor to rotate.
    How to manually engage AC compressor clutch when the system is low on antifreeze? Easy. Just adding refrigerant will solve this problem. If your car is compatible with R134a type of refrigerant, attaching a can to the system will override the low-pressure switch and restore the normal function of the compressor clutch.
    Unplug the single wire connector on the front side of the compressor. Take the fused jumper wire and connect its one end to that side of the wire connector that was connected to the compressor.
    Attach the other end of the jumper wire to the positive terminal of the battery. It will supply the battery voltage to the compressor clutch, allowing it to engage manually. There is no need to switch on the air conditioning system for this method to work.
    Jumping the relay is actually very easy. The method shown in this video is for a 4-prong relay, but if you have a 5-prong relay, the method is still applicable, it's just that you might have to find the diagram for the relay. Be sure to jump the copper side, not the gold side. Using a paper clip is easier, simpler and more convenient but we suggest using an insulated wire in order to avoid potential fire hazard and short circuit. Don't leave it connected too long to try and recharge the system, you risk serious and even catastrophic compressor damage.
    Even though the demonstration is on a 2010 Honda Civic, they should be similar to other Honda and Acura vehicles such as Accord, CRV, Element, Pilot, Odyssey and other models, domestic and imports.

    CHEVY TAHOE 2009 AC SNOWFLAKE LIGHT FLASHING 3 TIMES FIX.
    Thank you for this! We have been searching for hours on end trying to 1) check if the compressor is bad and 2) if it's good, how to manually start it so we can get refrigerant in it!!! We did replace the ambient sensor thinking this was it. Although it wasn't the fix, it turns out that sensor was bad anyways! We do not have a Honda but this still helped us find out hwo to manually engage the compressor, to then do more searching to find the relay numbers we needed to put the wire (not paper clip ;) ) in for it to work for our CHEVY TAHOE. For a 2009 - 87 and 30 does the trick (they are diagonal from each other). We started the vehicle after wire was in place and the AC (Snowflake) button stopped flashing 3 times, compressor engaged, and we were able to check the refrigerant levels (LOW LOW LOW). Successfully refilled to the green and our air is ice cold :) YAY for DIY.

    As a pro technician I don’t jump or bypass ac compressor relay. That’s because ac compressor are meant to cycle. Two some AC compressors are extremely expensive. An example is for a 2014 Honda civic hybrid, they cost almost 3,000 dollars 2,800 dollars to be exact. I don’t think you would want to risk burning up an extremely expensive compressor like that. Even regular compressors cost 300 dollars on up brand new. It’d best to troubleshoot why they do not kick in rather than doing this. There can only be few possibility. Start with a fuse, then check relay. Learn how to check a relay and load test them. 3rd is pressure sensor, 4th is compressor thermal protector some are equipped with thermal protector. You will know because there is at least three wires coming into the compressor one for the clutch and two for the thermal protector. Another thing to check is temperature sensor, then climate controller last to fail would be PCM where sometimes the transistor that drive the compressor relay fail. Something like that would drain your battery because the compressor clutch is always one even when car is off. Why so? Because when transistor fail they usually short. That makes the turned on all the time.

    Hey Aiman, great videos on manually overriding the AC clutch for the compressor. Question: I also have a honda civic (2011 EXL) same look as yours. But i am having trouble overriding the clutch. I tried with a paper clip and small cable to override the relay and the compressor would not turn on. When the car is on, i wiggled the clip/wire and there wasnt any sparks, which led me to believe maybe i wasnt putting the wire/clip in correctly. Might i need some alligator clips maybe? Not sure what else to do. AC was working just yesterday and it stopped last night, checked a month ago and gauge said it had about 1/4 left in freon.

    • @smisheski
      @smisheski 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What gauge said you had a 1/4 left? And refrigerant is not a consumable, it does not run out and need to be refilled. The ac/heating system is a closed loop, sealed system, ideally, and so it should always be 100% full. Unless you have a leak or something which would call for a repair.

Vacuum it down add Freon you can actually just pump the system, full air, and the compressor will keep killing it Pressure switch need to see that pressure and then AC compressor will kick on but it won’t get cold. • @c85senior
      @c85senior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freshface_2106 it's hard to say without being there, but if the compressor isn't kicking on it could be a number of things, check all your fuses that have anything to do with the a/c,. Check to see if the compressor clutch is getting power, and if it is you may have a bad a/c coil, clutch or compressor, by pass the hi/low pressure switch with a jumper wire if it comes on you have either too much or not enough freon in the system. If your not getting a signal (power) to the compressor you may have a problem with the pcm or maybe a damaged wire. That's what I would check & then go from there, but if your not familiar with a/c systems you are probably better off taking it to an a/c mechanic these are some basic things you can check easy. Hope this helps.

I have changed the compressor relay already, but the problems persist. If you check the entire system even when the ambient temperature is high it starts fine, but after a while when I get caught in traffic jams my AC does not perform well anymore, any suggestions on how to diagnose it? Why start compressor in an unsafe condition and hope you get enough refrigerant in before you damage it? It’s not running because the low pressure interlock is not satisfied. Simply start car, AC on max, and add refrigerant. When the low pressure switch is satisfied, the compressor will start in a fully protected condition. Took one minute for
    compressor to kick in and 5 minutes to charge. Still ice cold AC after 2 mos. Use a gage to avoid overcharging.

      You’re not understanding the video. The relay isn’t the problem. He explained it in the beginning of the video. The relay won’t receive a signal to switch to the “on” position and send a signal to the compressor if the pressures are too low to begin with and this is due to the low pressure switch. So, he’s bypassing the entire system to manually override the relay and force his compressor to engage, in turn this fills the system with Freon and then it works fine.

      My ac was working but then all of a sudden it stopped blowing cold air on freeway. So I tried reducing the compressor clutch gap with no spacers then one spacer clutch still didn’t kick in with engine/ac on so it not the gap. I suspect the clutch or coil.
      SomI hooked up ac gauges with engine off and ac off and just took readings and its about 80 deg H And 84 deg L with ambient temp of 80 under hood and this matches the charts, so this tells me I have some r134a and about same readings with engine and ac on but clutch is not engaged.
      So now I should jump it like video with our recharge and see where the readings are if the clutch engages if not then I know its the compressor clutch/coil is bad?

    No rookie! U can start charging your A/C w/o the compressor OR the engine running. If u vacuum the system 1st 2ck 4 leaks, u can dump Freon in2 1or both sides b4 even starting the engine if u hv head gauges. It's called priming the system. On a hot day, u can dump quite a bit of Freon in2 the system b4 starting. Priming relieves u of the concern about the low pressure switch preventing the AC clutch from activation.
    The bypass that u propose is DANGEROUS &RECKLESS. If u r a novice. NEVER ever try this. U don't need the compressor running 2start charging an empty system. The low pressure safety switch is there 2protect the A/C compressor from failure as the lubricant is housed in the Freon. An A/C failure in some cars will disable the vehicle &leave u stranded.
    U should use fender covers in your videos 4best practices. Wow, u put that metal can right down on the fender paint &then dragged it. U won't wk on my vehicles. Never wk ovr your fender paint.

    Wtf are you talking about. The compressor will kick on as soon as low pressure switch is satisfied. Gas will easily be at (r-134 is basically 1 psi per degree. Close enough anyway) 75psi on an 80° day. Runs at about 45psi when charged. So simply hook up to your suction line and add gas. If that is your only issue it will start itself.

You jump out compressor like only an imbecile would do…. You now pull the system into a vacuum an suck in non condensible gasses into your system ( air/humidity) and you are screwed.
