It’s more about the history than the course. To walk in the footsteps of all the greats who have ever played the game. Shot a 79 first time I played here. ( I play off 13). A caddie is essential and well worth the money. Tip generously.
You leave with memories to last a lifetime. I’ve played the old course 3 times now. Still smitten ❤️.

what is a good rule of thumb for tipping a caddie? I'm planning a trip to Scotland next summer, and this is definitely a stop for me, and being a 22 handicap, I'll definitely be getting my moneys worth with a caddie lol.

@@markb3079 i took the number of my caddie and used in for each of the three rounds.
My caddie was one of the longest still serving. I think I have him £250 but that is way above the recommended. Look at the website for advice.

He was great company, knew the course well and we had lunch together on the last day, on me. So many cool stories. For me St Andrew’s is all about the history. He just added to my memory of the place.
Hope you have a very memorable time there. 👍

@@myopenmind527 Me and my wife, along with my best friend and his wife are planning on the trip. My friend and I told them flat out, if we go here, there's NO WAY we're missing a round there! I am all about the history of things. When I had a chance to travel to Prague, Czech Rep, or a Bali, I chose Prague because of the old world history.
I have no problems with walking the course, but my friend may be able to get a buggy for his back. He is looking into his paperwork... But I wasn't sure if I wanted to go caddie or not, but I truly feel that will be the best course of action, to get the FULL effect!
Thank you for you information! I will definitely look into that more! Cheers!!

I have been lucky enough to play all the top 100 by Golf World in GB&I. Birkdale and Portrush are great but I would play the Old first every day. You have multiple choices on every tee and even more on your approach. Between that and the weather, it never gets old. 18 on paper is a pedestrian hole, but I have driven the green, putted from 60 yards, pitched with a wedge, chipped from 130 with a 6-iron and hit a full 3-wood. And all that coming into one of the most charming towns in the world. Finish 18 late on a summer night and buildings are spectacular.

@@SebOnGolf I was a member of the New club so we played all our medals there. I would say I have played it well over 100 times with my annual ticket, best was when I was 71. In the annual Bing Crosby tournament (220 golfers) on a rainy and very windy day, I managed a 77 (SS 73) to come 4th gross and win the super senior by a margin. You didn't ask but I put Loch Lomond best parkland, Sunningdale best heather and the Old best links,

    Hi great video.
I was lucky to play it about 6 years ago with my son and his best mate who was a member. As we were both off 8 we were allowed to play of the white pots. We both shot 78 nett 70. As a course its not spectacular but its the whole prestigious thing. My son was so in awe of it on the first tee he hyperventilated..

I've played it 6 times now and it grows on you every time, to the stage where I now love it as a course. I understand why some people would be underwhelmed after the first time but it is so subtle that it plays differently every day. If you are single figures ask to play off the whites as the day-to-day visitor tees can be quite far up. My top three courses are Cruden Bay, St Andrews Old Course, Carnoustie (my home course).

Played the Old Course for the 1st time 2 years ago (aged 46) , was shaking on 1st tee. As a 5 handicap have played many big matches and important courses but its still a special on that 1st tee. Shot a 70 nett 65 and have the scorecard framed on a wall in the house. Holed a putt from 10ft for par on the 17th and just thought about Seve Ballesteros having stood there. Its maybe not a spectacular golf course but its prestige makes it a must play. Never ever forget that day!!!

Play the Old 100 times and you will have 100 different experiences, many weather related. And The New is terrific and the Himalayas... pure entertainment! But rightly there are many much more dramatic links courses - nice to hear Royal Aberdeen mentioned, also go to Dornoch, Carnoustie, Turnberry and then over the water to my two favourites Royal County Down and The Island (nr Dublin). For "average golfers" there are a lot of very enjoyble golf courses in Scotland.... as well as great scenery and hospitality. You will be made most welcome.

Yeah, get that it's 1, 17 & 18 that stick in the memory. The rest of it is fairly easy, standard Scottish links. What you have to do when playing it is take a wee moment to yourself on a couple of holes, especially when you turn back to town, and take in that skyline. Remember where you are, the drama you watched unfold here any number of times on the tv. Its spine-tingling.

While I was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force back in the 80's, a group of us made the trip to Scotland specifically to play The Old Course and what these guys said is true. The history of the course, the surrounding town and just the atmosphere of Scotland is absolutely fabulous but as for the course, it's quite normal for a links course in Europe. Don't misunderstand me, the trip was fantastic and I'll never forget it but the golf was ridiculous. The wind, the hilliness of the fairways and just the difficulty of the course in general was crazy hard. We knew that before we decided to go but we wanted to "experience" the entire atmosphere. It was AWESOME.

Spot on Kevin. I'm a local ticket holder and have played there for over 30 years and it can be different every time you play depending on wind/weather and what sort of bounce you get. Tiger won "The Open" there in 2000 with a score of 18 under that equates to -4.5 shots a round. He had 4 days of sunshine and no wind, back then he could murder any course in these conditions. To all the folk who think it's so easy I say " If you play the Old a day with a stiff cross wing and you don't have a local caddie holding your hand you won't score anywhere near par" IMHO of course.

I’ve been very fortunate to go to St. Andrews many times and play the old course in every season and condition. The first time can be a little underwhelming outside of the 1st 17th and 18th holes. But I assure you, the more you play it the more you fall in love with it. The wind is it’s biggest defense.
