- Batu Caves is a limestone hill that features a series of caves and cave temples located in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan, a Hindu deity, who is honored particularly during the Thaipusam festival.
Here are some key points about Batu Caves:
Location: Batu Caves is situated about 11 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. It's easily accessible by road and public transportation.
Formation: The caves are formed within a limestone hill, said to be around 400 million years old. The caves themselves are formed from a series of limestone formations that are estimated to be about 400 million years old.
Cave Temples: Within the main cave, there are several Hindu shrines and temples. The most notable is the Temple Cave, or Cathedral Cave, which houses several Hindu shrines beneath its high vaulted ceiling. There are also other smaller caves, such as the Dark Cave, which is home to a variety of unique cave fauna and flora.
Lord Murugan Statue: At the foot of Batu Caves stands a colossal statue of Lord Murugan, which is one of the tallest statues of a Hindu deity in the world. The statue is about 42.7 meters (140 feet) high and is made of concrete and steel.
Thaipusam Festival: Batu Caves is particularly famous for the annual Thaipusam festival, which usually falls in January or February. During this festival, hundreds of thousands of devotees and tourists gather at Batu Caves to witness and participate in the procession, where many devotees carry kavadis (ornate structures) as acts of penance and devotion.
Tourism: Aside from its religious significance, Batu Caves is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors can climb a steep flight of 272 steps to reach the Temple Cave, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The caves are open to visitors throughout the year, attracting tourists, devotees, and rock climbing enthusiasts alike.
Overall, Batu Caves is not only a religious site but also a significant cultural and natural landmark in Malaysia, attracting visitors from around the world.

Enjoy, Have a great day full watching new friend from the Philippines w
Such a beautiful, verdant mountain! You can understand why the inhabitants made a temple there, and why the monkeys like it too. You have to admire how the monkeys make do on a tight budget. When they want something, they don't pay for it. They just take it.
Well said! We were hoping to go deeper into the dark cave portion, but it was closed. I think that would have been very interesting.
Thank you for watching 🙏

Yes, the monkeys and so sad, we as Malaysian had been voicing the state of cleanliness but to no avail
Are Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur better than New York and Chicago ? Are there places like Times Square , fifth avenue or Manhattan in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur ?
I think they are comparable 👍 Most big cities have similar things to offer, but the culture is what makes each place different and unique.
Thank you for watching 🙏
Dark caves is dangerous and need a guide
Is this place free for visit
Yes, the areas we visited were free. The dark cave requires a guided tour and costs a bit, but we didn't get to do that unfortunately.
