10 Tips for Being a Successful Freelance Motion Designer

  • To mark the 10 years of freelancing I wanted to see if I could come up with one tip per year which might be helpful for new motion designers.
This list is 100% arbitrary and subjective, and definitely not meant as a definitive guide to freelancing in any way. I'm not a rockstar, haven't worked at top agencies, or built up a huge social media audience creating stunning animations (yet. Hey there's still time).
What I HAVE done is work steadily and make plenty of mistakes along the way, and also seen new designers make some rookie errors. Hopefully this helps others do likewise.

Excellent video! Thanks for this 😁 I'll also use your idea of time sensitive tasks for my own students 😎 they'll hate it in the short term, but it'll be good for 'em!

Thank you! Do it, haha. I tell my students exactly the same thing. I wasn't sure they believed me so I made this: th-cam.com/video/S3p54hl3CQY/w-d-xo.html
But yeah, working under pressure is a skill I don't see many other educators pushing, which is why I'm so hated by all my students

Lots of great advice! I feel like this is the kind of information that is really sparse in the motion design niche on youtube so thanks for making this video.
Also, IMO, there is so much value in discussing the money side of things...so...I had about 2-3 months salary saved before going freelance (and also only 1 client) but they had me booked for two more animations, so that helped...🙃

Thank you! And thanks for sharing your story re: money side of things. Money in freelance and client management could be two separate videos on their own, hence briefly touching on them
