Recycling Pottery Clay

This is my simple method of recycling pottery clay. It's super easy and reclaiming clay scraps is one of the easiest ways to save yourself some money when you are making pottery. Everything goes into my reclaim bucket, slip, trimming scraps, and pots I don't like.

I always had to add a tiny amount of bleach to my scrap bucket to keep the water from becoming stinky or slimy. I feel like a lot of pottery content creators ignore this tip.

Would the increased smoothness come from the soaking of the clay or the fact that it’s the finer “silt” that you’re scraping off the top? I got a poetry wheel and kiln gifted to me recently. my only experience with pottery making is mud pies and the one time there was an actual cool person at my schools job fair.

Yes, it's important recycle the clay slip from your splash pan, as it's got all the fine clay particles in it. But I think it's smooth because it hasn't been sitting in a clay bag for months :-)

I love using reclaimed clay. It’s just easier for me to throw.
