Great video! Im a total beginner with clay and this overview of raku was very helpful. The only thing I suggest is NOT leaving your hot kiln in the microwave to cool down, that heat coming from the hole can damage the microwave.
Hey, the clay is a white stoneware. Any clay can be used in a microwave kiln. The glazes are more tricky, some will be very temperamental in the kiln. The ones in this video are raku specific but if you want to use regular glazes, I would suggest trying Mayco Jungle gems! they seem to do well in the kiln!

can uou use raku keramic caree cups ? is racu water resistan I would like to make cop from my backyard totally in my own house (i dont want to participate courses, so is it bossible with this ?)
You can get lower temp clay that vitrifies at lower temps. I saw a lady on Instagram talk about it but it going to test it myself to see because I’m skeptical

I just did my first raku in the microwave! Some of my glazes have little puckering marks. Any suggestions on what to do differently? I’m guess I maybe put the glaze on too thickly or left them in too long because the sunlight made it harder to see the glow. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
@@kourtneyswholesomelife thank you! I put photos in a raku group and found out the pockmarks were because I had pulled them out of the kiln before the glaze had fully matured. It’s not enough for an orange glow. Gotta check the glaze for a smooth glassy texture first. Not sure if my microwave is one of those that has a way of keeping the temperature in the microwave below a certain level, but it took a whole 15 minutes on full power for them to get to the right smooth mature glaze stage.
the temp of the body will probably be 1200 as it's stonware, the glaze is raku so 700/800 degrees is where it works best, and yes you are correct, carbon trapping!
I studied Ceramics Art in College and did a number of Raku firings. I didn't know it was posible doing Raku with a microwave. I was surprised with dunking in water I hadn't seen that done before. Those are nice looking examples you made.
Hello.....fab video you make it look so easy and fun.....im getting together the kit the only thing is Adam was holding quite a large glass basque kiln which i cant seem to find on the info anywhere, as the amazon one is much smaller ....would you have a link as to where i could find this please. I want to make cylinder shapes as high and as wide as the kiln oven that goes into the microwave. Is that possible or do i need to leave a bigger gap inside?

Hey! Yes you are.... some glazes work better than others, it's all about trial and error. Mayco jungle Gems fire really well in the kiln

Yes the object under is just an up-turned dish that covers the rotating element of the microwave, to keep the kiln stable

it's a little ceramic dish turned upside down, to stop the spinner interfering with the kiln as it heats

What size kiln would you recommend? And do you use raku clay or can you use any clay? Thank you.
I would probably start with the small if it's your first time, and I use regular clay (ash white stoneware) you can use any clay in a microwave kiln!

It doesn't matter! Any clay works. With stoneware, you might need to heat it for longer is all!

that's right, matte, it's just the clay but with carbon trapped on the surface

I think you can if use a larger kiln. But as Adam says in this video, the larger it is the longer it needs to fire for
I have so many questions. If I use my regular cone 6 clay, will it fire to vitrification or will a vase leak?
it depends on the glaze. I would say not...

I leave it for a few hours in the sun, and then use the heat of the kiln to really dry it out before putting it in for its bisque firing

it won't, it will just stay hot for longer. I would use an 800W microwave, any will do!

I’d say the glaze is too thick

you can use a stone slab, or a kiln shelf which is what we are using here! Anything that is really impervious to heat!

I use fire bricks, you can get them from the hardware store and they're cheaper than kiln furniture 😁

it's best to leave a bit of a gap around the pot so it doesn't get too overheated in one area and not the other
