At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    A lot of times that pegged weight, when hung up, will move down the line and the hook will dislodge the weight from the rocks. I have caught hundreds of fish split shoting. Great technique for co-angler to drag behind the boat. The zoom 6’ lizard is my favorite.

    Fished the split shot rig with a Zoom Centipede on Table Rock a few weeks ago…..it carried my high school boys to a 24th place out of 293 finish. We caught so many fish that day! It was a blast!
    I do like the idea of a pegged bullet weight vs. the split shot. Less likely to damage the line.

    When I use to fish some club tournaments years ago. This one young guy would sit on the back of the boat after noon and sleep with a rig very similar to this maybe a half ounce weight and sleep with the rod in his hands and he won so many tournaments big fish many times and he actually qualified for the regional derby consecutive years as a nonboater and every tournament when we d pass him hed be crashed out and we d come into weigh in and the joker would have 4 to 5 lb bass nearly every time. We used spilt shot rigs for years in clear water with trick worms and then we started putting a barrel swivel on 2 to 3 ft from the hook and would kill these spots around the spawn and the bream spawn. On the mini Carolina rig we d use a yum dinger and ive won a bunch of tournaments on the Carolina rig in clear deep water on long points and humps as well

    We used a chicken rig successfully on spotted bass at Table Rock Lake a couple of weeks ago. We put a bobber stop in front of the bullet weight and a swivel behind it to maintain the length of the leader.

    I've tried Carolina rigs, swimming worms as Tom Mann called a short leader Carolina rigs with a u -tail worm , split shot on spinning tackle and a light weight Carolina rig also called a Yamoto rig as I recall from Arizona thirty five years ago Shakey heads on light line in deep waters. Light line gets more strikes as a rule I learned this with Charlie Brewer slider worms and spider heads. The down side is the time it takes big fish to be boated. They can tangle you up or break the line. Spinning reels just Rent as powerful as bait caster

  • @williamgould2470
    @williamgould2470 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We use a small Carolina rig like you're using towards the end of the day when the fish have stopped biting.. Able to keep the action going.. Typically we are actually making a Carolina rig with a swivel but I like the idea of the pegged weight to adjust the length of our leader . Another forgotten way to catch fish especially at the end of the day is a Charlie Brewer Slider jig and worm on a very light line .The same as the small Carolina rig

But I've been really using this presentation a lot with my homemade open pour worms that float and I can get a good big of wiggle with. I even recently made a video on it because of how good it is . I have a similar rig tied on one of my spinning rods almost all the time. I use 1/16 - 5/16 tungsten bullet, weights, mostly an 1/8. & I put bobber stop before & after my weight. Then I can pull top bobber stop up out of the way & fish it as a unpegged texas rig. Or peg the weight at any distance from the bait. Adjust it as needed for situation. I just use 2 bobber stops instead of pegg it. I tried it for first time 2-3 springs ago now & it's caught tons of fish through all seasons for me

    I like to use the pinch-on bullet weight made by Gremlin. It's my cheat for if I'm fishing a weightless Texas rig and I find I need to add a little weight, I can do it on the fly and not have to re-tie. I've never once had any problems with them damaging my line. But now that you said that about split shots I'm gonna be paranoid.

    Nice rig Matt. Would be a good rig for those Riverside floating baits that have been around from the old days. Or a Zoom Centipede Also, water Gremlins makes a bullet weight that crimps on your line like a split shot but it does not damage the line. It has a hole in the center to accommodate your line. That would make changing out weights pretty easy and fast without having to re tie your hook. Only drawback is it's made out of lead and not tungsten.

    I found the mojo rig because I was fishing a lake that had this algae ike stuff on bottom- ppl around here call it "witch's hair"- but it gaks up on your weight, and you bait- until you're just dragging a big wad of muddy algae. But- the mojo cylinder weight spreads the weight out over a larger surface area- so it drags on top of it- instead of digging in- and if I use a mono line and floating bait- I can keep it right above the gook. I still get a little build up on the weight itself but- not enough to matter. Fishing it for this reason I discovered something else- during the hottest part of the summer here- this is one of the few presentations that still works- put a trick worm or something else with no action on and just drag it super slowly. You may have to make 20 casts to get one bite- I think the fish are so turned off you're having to basically wait until you've managed to drag it right in front of their face- but it almost always works.

    I am just learning to fish! Been going daily to a local lake and testing out a lot of different stuff I learned on TH-cam! Started with clip on bobber with splitshot, they stumbled across Kentucky rig, then found out about dropshot rig, then a slip on bobber and now Carolina rig! I have tried all of these fishing same spit off the dock and they all seem to work. But I wanna just use one universal rig that can catch pretty much most species of fish. I will give this mini Carolina rig a good try (least experience with it). Btw, I fish with live worms. Do I need to cast and retrieve this rig with live bait or can I cast and let it sit in the bottom?

    Question Matt…. I’m afraid to use light line around submergent grass with a spinning rod…. Wouldn’t a jig rod with 20# flouro stay on top better than 8# with same weight? Then you have to power to horse em out… you think that line will kill the action? I figure it’ll make it float and glide better… thanks

      you can do it with heavy line. I just prefer light line since the baits are small and heavy line can over power the action of small lures.

    The one thing about the Carolina rig was the line was free so the fish could not feel it

    so how do you block the bullet so that it does not move on its own on the fluorocarbon?

    Is there a reason you like to use a peg instead of a bobber stop between the weight and hook? I guess that would make it technically a Free Rig (without the "free rig" weight). Is there an advantage to pegging it in other words. Great video!

    Hey Matt, how did you peg the sinker ? I have always used a toothpick but am not a fan of this. Wasn’t sure how you did this

    Seeing this video I came up with a question. At the beginning you said you use this on a spinning rod, what is the crossing point where underneath a certain weight you use spinning rods and above that weight you use casting rods? Is it only based on the actual weight or are there other factors?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      weight is a factor, but so is bait choice, water clarity, and structure im fishing.

      Because of budget I do not have fancy electronic on my boat. I use Navionic on my phone and I-Pad. Will your lake breakdowns transfer to that format?
