I know surfing is a niche sport, but Kelly should be in the conversation of the greatest professional athlete of all time. At least Top10 even Top5! Next to the Michael Jordans, Pelé, Muhammad Ali, Michael Phelps, Wayne Gretzky... In terms of longevity, there's no discussion, Kelly is no1.

As an older person who still skies, mountain bikes and does a lot of long distance backpacking the key is having passion for what you do. I have fractured my skull, broken my back in four places, broken knee but it’s the love of my sports that has kept me focused and training like a dog. Most of my friends are pretty much the same. In the winter I live or ski and the rest of the time I live to ride and hike. I also eat mostly a keto diet. I am well into my 60s and still hitting it hard and have a much younger wife, that also helps. Never stop training and doing what you love. One more thing don’t drink and drug, at least not often.

Agree with the drinking, but I smoke pot regularly. I’m in my mid 40s and still surf and skateboard daily, or at least 4 days of the week. Surfing is really pretty easy on the body. You’d think it’d be rough on your shoulders but my shoulders feel great. Can’t say that about my knees. Skateboarding kinda messed them up. No surgery yet though.

I am only 35 however had 4 neck surgeries in my mid 20s and became 50lbs overweight during this. I was a good strength athlete and decent runner prior to surgeries.
Post surgery went low carb then hiking and got back into running. It brought tears to my eyes when i found out some of my doctors were worried id never be able to work after all the surgeries.
I first started walking on trails for 1 mile, then 2 miles, then 3. I remember it was an achievement walking around a 6 mile loop pain free. Now ive run this loop in 46 minutes no issue.
Love what you do. The love for what you do will carry you on those days you dont want to do things....

I learned to surf at 42. The key for me was to go to a physio and learn how to strengthen your core. In the mornings i used to be so sore just getting out of bed. Now i do my physio sanctioned exercises religiously for my core, arms, legs and back takes maybe 6 mins before even getting out of bed. No more pain, more flexibility, recovery is faster and easier and as a bonus my surfing has improved 1000%. I’m also more muscular in my upper body and ive lost all my body fat. My bp has improved as well.

A great friend of mine told me you have from 5 - 56 yrs old to make things really happen, YES you can keep doing your passions after 56 till you're 156, but the bottom line is the body really changes and it's just a part of life. Living here in SD CA and surfing for decades 57 yrs old is when I start to see people drop off from surfing, so my friend has defiantly been right. Thee other thing he told me it's just not the physical thing after 56 yrs old, it's the mental thing, he said that crazy over the top discipline most hard cores have starts to slowly fade, again not a bad thing it's just part of life. I'm here to tell you lol he's right that defiantly happened to me. So it'l be interesting when Kelly hits 57, I'm sure he'll be surfing till he's 99 BUT you will notice a difference at 57. Michael Ho is the perfect example, he's still out at Pipeline at age I believe 64 but you can defiantly see the change, so get it in while you can because you will be surprised like I was on the 'change' that will happen. Peace

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on feelings in your later life, other than the fact that once you realize that you are a gifted athlete especially surfer, you either have it or you don't. We can see this in young surfers who stand out at 4 or 5 years old be the way they have magic feelings.some talents have been manufactured and cultivated, so it's not impossible, but those that are naturally gifted at a young age are revealing a higher connection with all kinds of things. Kelly had it at a young age, like many before and after him. Some people try harder and some just seem to find it effortlessly. That's what Kelly slater was as a kid. Of he ever had moments of failure it was just distractions along the way, and the business world trying to manipulate him.

Wasn't corn itself invented? It can't survive in the wild and the grain it came from, tenosinte, was inedible. You can definitely be allergic to corn, and can be allergic to most natural things.

He has retained his equity over time. Americans hate you if you stay healthy like this. It's weird because everyone your age becomes fat and useless, and they get bitter. Your spouse will hate you too if he or shit gets fat and sick, they'll resent you. Then people pretend to want to work and be healthy too, and they'll ask you to show them but that's just to pretend and then tell you that it doesn't work. They're looking for a parent. They work their parents like that playing a victim. An example is this is golfers journal like golfers are in shape. They should be interviewing. John Daley.

Yeah but you're not competing at an international level with late teens, early twenty each olds. It's one thing to surf until the day you die and another to keep yourself in good enough shape to compete with the best until the day you die.

    • @Ziggyc54

@@guitardivesmall You are missing the point. A 51 year old or older is capable of competing at any sport if his or her body stays healthy. It’s the stupid societal belief that when you get to a certain age you should just roll over and die. Each individual is different, and if you are capable of competing in your chosen passion, go for it, whatever your age.
