Critical Concepts in the Nutritional Support of Mitochondria

  • Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. While so much foundational science education is placed in understanding cellular energy production through these organelles, this focus is often lost in broader healthcare and nutrition practice. Yet because they are the energy source of the cell, the influence of the mitochondria is central to human health. A loss of mitochondrial function and increased cellular dependence on glycolysis has been directly linked to a variety of neurodegenerative and chronic diseases, including ALS, Parkinson’s, and cancer.
There are several dietary and microbial factors that influence mitochondrial health. As mitochondria suffer from excess oxidative stress, their capacity for aerobic respiration declines. Although carbohydrate metabolism can often compensate for decreased fatty acid metabolism, it fails to provide many types of cells with adequate and physiologically appropriate energy levels. The associated energy deficit is responsible for a loss of organ and/or system function.
Further, research has consistently illustrated a decline in mitochondrial health with age. However much of the damage that occurs in the aging process is the result of chronic imbalances between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants available to the mitochondrial membrane. Additionally, there are microbiome-generated and environmental toxins that have a deleterious effect on mitochondrial metabolism. Many of these exposures result from daily food and ingredient choices.
This discussion will review cellular energy production through fatty acid oxidation and metabolism and highlight the etiology of mitochondrial pathology, those factors that contribute to a decline in function, and the nutrients/foods that can provide significant risk reduction.

An automobile can not operate with a faulty engine. The 'engine' of the human body is not a huge organ, it is billions of tiny organelles. Perhaps it is their invisibility that has side-tracked medicine for generations and hindered us from realizing almost all disease states have their roots in metabolic dysfunction. Health of Mitochondria is paramount!

Changing my diet saved me from debilitating back pain, nerve pain, joint pain, muscle pain, digestive issues, raised blood pressure, 20kg over weight. It took around 8 months for all these problems to resolve. Since 2020 I've been completely pain free and never felt and looked healthier.
I'm only eating fatty meats, seafood, eggs and dairy.
Prior to that I was eating the mainstream version of a healthy diet (lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains, low fat, eating the rainbow etc) for decades and watching my health slowly decline.
I learnt lots watching videos by Dr Ken Berry, Dr Shawn Baker, Dr Gary Fettke, Dr Benjamin Bikman, Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, Dr Anthony Chaffee, Dr Paul Mason etc.
And these authors videos Diana Rodgers, Robb Wolf, Lierre Keith.
I read this peer-reviewed scientific article, that shows how 2,029 people had amazing results on the diet I'm on it's called "Behavioral Characteristics and Self-Reported Health Status among

@@jboogs49the thing is, cutting carbs to little or none makes it easier. I have cut "calories" over and over and it was never sustainable. Even a "healthy" apple or bowl of oatmeal will have me craving more carbs. If I cut these foods (as well as processed grains, etc) all together, I have no cravings and can stick to a healthier WOE.

My mother was told to give me chicken and fish. But as she had five children she could not afford good meats so we got a lot of potatoes bread and veg. Me on a diet I got less so I was always starving. And ended up my body stored any surplus so I just got fatter.
Eventually after loads of health problems I was diagnosed b12 deficency and placed on injections.
My GP asked what I ate I told her I needed a bar of chocholate to get out of bed I had no energy. Low mood all the things that goes with being overweight but nutriently starved.
She advised red meat and I added butter. I take no potstoes now and only mushrooms and tomatoes and onions and peas. Cheese once per month and loads of eggs I dont drink milk. Fruit a few oranges in the Autum time.
I am ketosis unless I have a holiday.
But I do feel much better and the fat is disappearing in favour of muscle. I also take vit d and magnesium.

Plant-based diet?! No thanks. I'm surprised you can suggest that in 2023. 🥺

Surprised? I thought many more people nowadays are aware of the benefits of a whole food plant-based diet. So, I guess that I am the surprised one.

Thanks for the laugh Greg. Saying "benefits of whole foods" is like betting on the horse posing as a unicorn. There's no reason for that wholeness or horn to do any magic at all.

Plants contain many substaces we need to stay healty and many that are detrimatial for us. To eat animals that have chosen their food, like game or pastured cattle, give us those too. Industry meat don't. For us who are tolerant to plants, plant based are healthy.

@@atlet1 In addition to the oxalates, plants have high levels of deuterium and glyphosate, which meat typically does not. Organic might be better, but I really don't know how anything I buy was grown. For me, animal-based makes the most sense.

@@atlet1 please name one substance i need to stay healthy that comes from a plant. I'd also urge you to look beyond your current horizons.

This guy has succumbed to seed oil hate. But there is zero negative evidence on seed oils

You are so wrong, seed oils and sugar combine are like little bombs going off in your body

Some very interesting videos by Dr Chris Knobbe on this. I found him quite convincing.

I wonder who your audience is. In spite of the glowing comments below, I thought your talk just wasted most of mey time since it constantly contains names of chemicals and biological reactions I am not the familiar with. I cann eat or refraind from eating words. Best wishes anyway.

I was going to give a thumbs up until you promoted a non-whole food supplement at the end of the video. So disappointing.
