My must have top 5 notions/must have items: CG 2-8 interchangeable set with extra cable lengths in 4” tip length, a “fixer needle” one tip is knit needle tip on opposite side is an average size crochet hook-to fix dropped stitches or use as a cable needle too-3 in one tool, stitch markers- lightbulb and solid circle ones, smooth waste yarn in a light and dark color, tapestry needle. I can break yarn with my hands if necessary but small scissor is #6. Great episode. Love the MT Wonka bag idea.
My notions bag is a small zip bag I got years ago from a Clinque give away. Inside I have stitch markers, scissors, tape measure, 6 inch ruler, crochet hook, cable needle, tapestry needle, waste yarn, highlighter, pencil & row counter. Happy knitting!
Thanks for answering my question. My top notions are same as yours but additionally I have Barber cords, crochet hook, hand balm, a highlighter and a nail file.
Fun episode!! I have started to keep a little notions pouch in every project bag. I have most of the same key notions as all of you; a needle sizer, stitch markers, tapestry needles, scissors and a tape measure. The additional two things that I can’t live without are my little crochet hook stitch fixer and my little metal needle threader. Happy knitting!
a cable tighten for interchangeable, stitch markers, mini scissors, small crochet hook for dropped stitches, cable needle, darning needle and now cable locks…
I’m a pencil case for notions gal. Every project bag has one with: darning needles, scissors, measuring tape, cable needle, row counter, stitch markers, a crochet hook, a highlighter, pencil, pony head lacing (TBK cords on the cheap), and my most beloved essential, tiny tins of solid hand lotion. I choose the lotion to match the project and always associate that smell with the sweater. Just finished a cabled sweater that I’ll always associate with blood oranges :)
My notions kit is in a zippered glasses case. My go to notions are a pair of scissors, stitch markers, a tape measure and a tube of tapestry needles. Keep on chatting!
I have actual Altoids tins in every bag. My green one has my cable needle in it, so I always know where to find it. They’re filled with stitch markers. I always have little folded scissors. I have a zipper crochet hook keeper. In two of the hook slots I keep my needles for weaving in ends so I always have them handy. And, like Amanda, I pull the needles I need for the project (or hook). My favorite notion is my neck light. I often knit where the light is behind my work and it makes it hard to see the stitches.
I have a few notions kits for different project bags. The essential tools in each one are stitch markers, progress keeper, tapestry needle, scissors, retractable tape measure, interchangeable needle pin with some end caps, pencil, and eraser. In my sweater bag, I also have purl strings, highlighter tape, cable needles, stitch holders, and a ruler. I don’t carry my interchangeable needle set, needle gauge, crochet hook set, or crochet cotton that I use as a lifeline but do keep them in a specific place so I know where to find them.
Hi ladies! Enjoyed your show. I always carry just the needles needed, small notions bag. My must-have in all bags is a pen or pencil with those small spiral notepads for any notes.
I love to watch you all knit... I didn't get to see Jen knit because of the large cup in front of her... it mesmerizes me... I loved the Opinion segment... very informative!!! I paused and ran to your website for the Willy Wonka set!!! I will check back for it! Notions are reading glasses, cuz without them I wouldn't be able to craft, I love my Bohin red tiny scissors, big needle with a curve at the end for weaving in the ends or making scrubbies, cable lockers so that my yarn doesn't fall off my needles, yes, I'm a noobie... but you inspire me so much!!!
Hello and thank you for another fun episode ❤ I use everything you mentioned plus hand cream (sometimes after dry yarn I feel like I need some skin care) and woolwash for some quick/express wet blocking
Great podcast! I got lost of rounds on my sweater and Christmas socks in. My must have notions are: fix-it tool (small crochet hook on one end and point on the other), measuring tape, ring stitch markers and light bulb removable markers and a darning needle.
First time watching and so enjoyed it! My notions musts are purl string (I attach to needles as stoppers often), scissors, tape measure, stitch marker, tapestry needle, and t pin. All in a chapstick tin!
Possibly my favorite episode so far! I blew coffee out my nose when I read the time stamp banner about when the knitting was going to start.😂 I carry a repurposed (Ipsy subscription) small cosmetic pouch in each project bag. Cocoknits enamel coated solid ring markers and lightbulb safety pins, a small retractable tape measure, teeny tiny scissors, a Susan Bates fix it tool and a glass nail file in each. Yes I’m very specific 🙄
I love hearing what notions are in everyone's bags! I've gathered many of the same tools over the years and always have a retractable tape measure, foldable scissors, and a crochet hook (for those pesky dropped stitches). My new favorite are the silicone stitch stoppers - such a fun way to save your project from falling off the needles. The funniest comment I have ever gotten about one of my favorite tools happened at a meeting. I took out my portable scale so that I could weigh my yarn when the entire table of non-knitters went silent... someone finally asked why I was carrying around a drug-dealer/dope scale. It made for a good laugh!!!
Happy Vlogmas ladies! My notions bags includes, stitch markers/progress keepers, scissors, waste yarn/barber cords, needle stoppers, measuring tape, pen/pencil, tapestry needles, double pointed needles (depending on project) and crochet hook (size depending on project). I mainly use my circular ChiaoGoo needles ( small - larger / short - regular). I cannot have enough stitch markers. I purchased a shallow ceramic salad bowl earlier this year to use as my receptacle for my aforementioned tools while knitting at home. In this way everything is exposed so I do not need to dig in my project bag. If traveling, I keep a pouch filled with the essentials.
Great episode! My absolute notion, without a doubt, is the Thread & Maple On-the-Go wallet. Small leather pouch that comes with small scissors, two spots for darning needles, a zipper pocket for stitch markers and a little pocket that I’ve added a small Fix-it tool and a floop. And it all folds closed with a good magnet. Love it! I also add a sock ruler or a measuring tape to a project bag if needed.
Great episode! My absolute must-have notion is the Susan Bates Handi Tool. It’s a little fixit tool with a crochet end and a pointy end. It’s only a couple of dollars, and I use it on every single project.
My notions keeper is the size of a large pencil case. When it started to fall apart, I covered it with knitting stickers from my journeys. When the stickers started to fail, I covered it in clear packing tape. It has sharp embroidery scissors, a nail file, crochet hook, cable needle, darning needles, and little plastic figures that make me smile. I have several kits, but this is my fave.
Hello friends! My top five - tape measure, stitch markers (I love seasonal/themed but I also love a good, smooth, small ring and clippy ones too), DPNs (I use them for so many things - dropping down, cables), barber cords/ plastic tubing for holding live stitches. And a portable scale because, well 🧶🐓
Had a great laugh when I saw the time stamp. Enjoy listening to you all talk about everything. My must haves stitch markers with lobster clasps, tape measure, crochet hook, and needle stoppers
I have a dozen or more grab and go little "kits" to put in my project bags. I like to include: a small nail file, a bent tip darning needle, stitch markers just a simple circle ones, a measuring tape & a small pair of scissors.
Carla - you sound like me - but I definitely need to "corral" mine sometime soon - maybe between Christmas and New Year's -- I'm down to about 3 I can put my hands on! 😂 ~K🧶
I like to be sure I have a bunch of stitch markers in different colors, a crochet hook or fix it tool with a hook at one end and a point on the other, small scissors, a tape measure, purl strings and fun stitch savers ( I think that's what they're called 😬 Also a pencil!
Happy to see you all! Always a fun podcast - which brought back memories of my grandma knitting. She would use waste yarn rounds as stitch markers- which would make the stitches look pretty. I keep all small items in a Tupperware ( stitch markers, round marker chains, embroidery needle). Inside my knitting basket crochet hook, scissors, measure tape, my glasses, pencil, &instructions. Happy Vlogmas🧶🧶
I have a clam shell at home for stitch markers and needle stoppers. My travel notions are in the tiniest canvas zip for essentials tube for trying on, kiddie craft scissors, tiny scale, tiny tin with stitch markers needle stoppers, measuring tape and a tube with 2 darning needles. That’s 7 the way I count! You guys are great and love the longer ones.
Hi Kathleen, Jenn, and Amanda, Thanks for another inspiring and happy episode! Yes, I watched to the end! My 5+ items in my project bags are small scissors, li08 pillght bulb stich markers plus round stitch markers, tape measure, pen/pad, hook ( just in case I drop a stitch 😅) waste yarn and darning needles. Happy Knitting🧶Happy Holidays 🎅🎄🤶
Wow! This was a chock-ful of opinions episode! My absolute must have accessories are stitch markers, scissors and tapestry needle. Anything beyond that is "gravy!" Thank you for this entertaining episode!
Thank you for putting the time stamp on this video. Time is limited these days so I appreciate this feature. As far as notions kit, I really don't have one. I keep all my supplies in a drawer in the room I knit in, though I do need to get more organized and your tips helped me.
Hi ladies. Fun episode again. My notions must haves are my Chiagoos, barber cords, row counter from Twice Sheared Sheep, tapestry needles, scissors, tape measure, small crochet hook for picking up stitches, and light bulb stitch markers. Happy knitting.❤❤❤
I make a little Notions bag for each of my project bags. Tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors, lightbub markers. If I am making a sweater, I also throw in a barber cord tin
Love your opinions, when I started I got a muslin totes from my Dollar store. My must haves, small crochet hook, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, darning needle. Added likes are spiral cable needle, needle gauge, snap sock ruler ( I’m a sock knitter), gauge ruler. Love having a variety of needles for different projects
Love your podcasts! My knitting essentials consist of a set of needles (Lykke come in wonderful zip pouches.). Scissors, fix a stitch, and stitch markers. The fix a stitch doubles as a cable needle. My needle sets all contain a variety of cords and tools for the set. Wish I could say I always use project bags as I also sew but often everything is carried in a plastic bag from a grocery store. Recycling . . . Right?
Great action-packed video. So many goodies to admire. My notion bag has a crochet hook, stitch markers, needkes, scissors, measuring tape, chiaogoo needles set . I'm a one project at time knitter. You ladies are the best!
Hello ladies, not sure you mentioned waste yarn. I always have waste yarn in my notions kit. Also one thing i would say is essential is a beautiful project bag. I used whatever i could find for years and then nearly died when i spent the money on a fridge supply bag - but every time i look at it i feel motivated and inspired to work on my project. now, if i don't have a beautiful bag free for my new project, i don't start it. - ok my top 5. stitch markers, scissors, a pen that cannot accidently get ink on my project, a band aid and a tampon. you never know when you need a band aid or tampon and i am never without my knitting bag. :)
I'm like Amanda. I have a big notions bag that has all my not-in-use notions. I have three sets of interchangeables, fixed 16 inch for hats, dpns, and fixed 16 inch for socks (lots, I knit them in tandem on two sets of two circs). I pull all the needles I need (and a crochet hook/stitch fixer) and put them in the project bag. Then I pull all the stitch markers and progress keepers and needle stoppers I need and put them in a tin in the project bag. Last, I have a little notions pouch that is always with me that has my Gingher stork scissors, my measuring tape, my cable spiral, a nail file, and my darning needles. That is shared between all projects as needed.
Kathleen, you mentioned that a scale for weighing yarn is a helpful item. I need one to weigh my yarn before I can cast on for the Petite Knits Sophie Shawl. Does the store carry a nice one? 🙂
Hi there - we have not found a great source for one among our suppliers, unfortunately. I got a tiny one on Amazon based on KnittyNatty's recommendation some time ago. ~K🧶
