I really needed this one. When I was a pre-teen back in 1996, I somehow knocked a little knick in my dad's Takamine acoustic guitar and I'm glad to finally know how to restore it. I didn't think there was anything I could do. He's in the nursing home now but he may be pleased to see that it's fixed and I can play him some music when I go see him now. Bless you Randy!

the blade trick has been around for years. i remember seeing my father using the blade to remove paint runs. i use the same tricks on guitars. its a lot better then sanding a little spot. every glue i used turns white after drying.
Randy, here's a super easy way to accelerate a CA cure without making it go white or foamy. Apply the CA. Lay your roll of tape on the guitar so it surrounds the repair. Lay a paper towel over the tape roll. Give the paper towel a single blast of accelerator (I prefer Zip Kicker in the little pump bottle). The kicker's vapor is heavier than air and it will settle into the 'well' you created with the tape roll and kick the CA to a hard cure in about five minutes. Yet another way to do this kicker vapor trick is to roll up a little section of paper towel and slide it into a small squeeze bottle. Add a few drops of kicker to the bottle. You don't want liquid in the bottle...just a few drops on the paper towel. Screw the spout on, and very slowly and gently puff air from the bottle onto the wet CA. Slowly and gently is the trick. The kicker vapors will set the CA hard. If you monitor the reflection of a bright overhead light in the surface of the wet CA as you do this, you will see when it kicks. For small jobs like yours, I prefer the little 'needle oiler' squeeze bottles because they have a silicone cap that seals the end of the needle and the kicker won't dry out. Cheers!

Great video thanks. One thing you might want to mention in the future is that thin viscosity CA glue directly on Spruce will darken it considerably. I just tried filling in a ding on a 1970s classical, but because the ding was down to the bare wood, the CA glue turned it 3 shades darker than the rest of the top 😩
My 17 year old Taylor has a ding on the top - my kid fastballed the remote controll at me whilst the Taylor was on my lap...this was great to see.
Good one Randy. That's right you sure can't rush it. I used to use lacquer to drop fill dings but it really did take days and multiple fills. CA is god send for drop fills.

I stumbled across this video at the perfect time. Just today a stage tech knocked over my old Martin D35 (he is a great guy and felt pretty bad, but I won’t lie I swallowed some choice words). Luckily the only damage was a pretty solid ding several inches south of the pick guard. I’ll be taking my time and fixing it using the tips from this video. Just to play it safe I might test the drop fill/scrape technique on some scrap before I attempt on a vintage Martin… 😅

That's crazy!! My dad had just brought home his D28 several yrs ago. He yelled to my mom for a 9v .. she came in to their bedroom doorway throwing the battery on the bed.. only the guitar was lying there. She put 2 nice dings in it before he had it home for an hour.

You said a word I've heard of before, " cuttage ". But another word is not familiar, "snow plow". Is that what you do to the ground when you grow snows? Only kidding. Here in the south it does snow around once or twice every ten years. Some folks just have wrecks trying to drive. Ok, thanks so much for the valuable tips on repairs. Excellent video! I'm a truck driver & take my acoustic Ovation with me on every mile I drive. Last week while hooking my trailer, my aluminum clipboard fell about 5 feet down onto my Ovation, that was leaning against my passenger seat. Needless to say the soundboard was badly dented, still played great, but I knew repair was needed to hold off any further damage. I'll be attempting your method and fix some spots, but for the deeper longer gouges, would it be ok to build up CA glue over the area and scrape it with a razor like you did? Thanks for the video and any tips you could throw at me, if you have the time. Thanks again!
The bridge saddle looks so low on the A D and G strings..maybe its just the camera angle...hope you're doing great in these crazy days...

Hi, i'm trying to do this on my guitar but wonder if I do it wrong it will end up looking worse then it does. You said it's getting bigger, if there is no further impact why is it getting bigger? If I take care and not bump that same spot is there a reason that spot would grow bigger?

Your previous vid on this fix gave me the confidence to attack 2 dings in my Furch g23CR elite.
Came up great - just a little darkening of the wood fibres but the finish is fantastic.
The Semi-Chrome is crazy expensive in the UK so I used Autosol chrome polish and Mcguires.

I could have used touchup markers and it would have looked better yes, I was more concerned with sealing it, had it been someone elses guitar I would have done it differently. thanks for watching!

Randy good job, I noticed the saddle on that guitar is almost flush with the bridge?? I have never seen a saddle sit that low is that because it needs a neck reset?? God Bless Brother.

My guitar looked a lot like this Martin you have first I painted it black it stayed like that for a while then I decided I wanted to stain the guitar cuz I just like the way guitars sound when they don't have a gloss finish, also on the back of my guitar I engraved a huge cross so I had to get the wood level so there was a lot of sanding, while I was standing I got all the way down to the redwood and some spots I even did this on the front because there were some spots where I outlined my bridge with a marker just trying to make it look better it's a long story lol anyways I'm staying the guitar but those spots where I dug too far are really not wanting to hold the stain how do I fix that

Hi Randy, thank you for everything that you do!I've learned so so so so much from you. One question, I dropped my guitar the other day on the corner of the back and it has a pretty large chip. The piece of finish just broke off and disappeared. Can I just use ca glue to fill in the gap of the finish? The body is okay (I think) and it's only the missing piece in the finish
"CA", will any superglue work...crazy glue, loktite, etc. Recommend only the thin stuff, or could the gel versions be used on deep chips?

Randy, you mentioned that those dings won't get worse being sealed. I have several on my guitar. Will they get bigger without sealing them?
If your finish is cracked or dented or partially missing then yes, elements will work their way into the wood and they will get bigger over time. Both of these have already gotten bigger than they originally were and it's only been a few years. They need to be sealed is the only way to keep them from getting worse. Thanks for watching!

It looks white because I sprayed it with accelerator, and I often forget to to show things when trying to get the right camera angle the right lens and the right lighting when the job is what's mostly important to me. Thank you for checking it out.
