it’s like the parts of Les Mis people remember for being genuinely stirring compressed into a manic little nugget of delight without the 3 hour slog that is the Les Mis. The goofy scenario and the vulgar, flippant phrasing are a great example of humor used not to tear down but to compress. Sometimes an idea that’s tiresome as a long serious work is much more potent and effective as a quick snappy joke. my favorite part is the list of tortures where they only vaguely gesture at the idea of a rhyme: “you may get stabbed in the head, with a dagger or sword. You may be burned to death or skinned alive or worse. But when they torture you, you will not feel the need to run, for though you die, La Resistance lives on!” It’s presented so inspiringly but is in fact the worst, most demoralizing speech possible, spending way too much time on possible agonies and not nearly enough on the importance of what they’re fighting for, which is what makes Les Mis such a long exhausting watch. It’s a killer gag though. and as wendy says, fvkk Gregory! fvkk him right in the ear!
@chexfan2000 nicely said, and certainly more thoughtful than I'd been around storytellingstructure and composition. I also found Les Mis a labour to get through.
@@thegreenmanofnorwich it just doesn’t need to be nearly as long as it is! The character dynamics are fairly simple to follow, it’s not like there’s an intricate and twisting series of betrayals and double identities and sexy revenge and secret twins to get through. It’s just that every single character feels the need to bemoan their tragic circumstances at great length, despite having absolutely no new information to provide the audience after the first few lines. I Dreamed A Dream is a very stirring song, but compare it to another good song from another show I cannot stand to sit through: Memory, from Cats. Given that the horny coked up jellicle cats speak entirely in irritating nonsensical riddles like a close knit group of low-intensity teen bullies flaunting their group in jokes to make new kids feel awkward, Grizabellas whole deal is unclear until she sings Memory, and every line of it either provided additional context about her overall emotional turmoil as well as what the hell s glamour cat is, or if not, provides a very evocative description of transitions between day and night and day again, which underscored the way grizabella is experiencing overwhelming waves of nostalgia, grief, longing, regret etc that hold her temporarily before she is pushed onward by this hope. I Dreamed A Dream tells us practically nothing that the characters have not already clearly stated. Fantine used to be in better circumstances, but now her circumstances are dire. She is sad about it. Very sad. Miserable even. So miserable that the music should definitely be a loud swelling romantic bombastic borderline triumphant conclusion, yeah perfect for a lament 🙄 The problem is that Les Mis repeats the situations of the characters like this constantly, without ever bringing anything more. The songs are just restating the same things over and over in a very emphatic manner, all of them slow and ponderous and Important, and it ultimately detracts from our ability to connect with the tragedy. We aren’t watching sad miserable poverty stricken wretches getting ground down by the system, we’re watching extremely self satisfied theater kids really relishing their big solos. I want to see it at 2x the tempo across the board. Everything twice as fast. Bet it would be far less arduous.
