My Dad retired about 15 years ago and he basically sails his boat all over the place. He's sailed to Hawaii about 7-8 times, he's been up to alaska, down in the sea of Cortez in Mexico, and a few years ago he sailed to Tahiti. He does this entirely on his own in his 32' West sail. My thoughts: he's a crazy person, many people romanticize the thought of sailing a boat everywhere without realizing how much work it is, and how dangerous it is, and how dedicated you have to be to make it work. I love my Dad, but I'm not sailing with him to another country. Just to Hawaii it's generally a 24 day trip one way. He's been caught in three diffferent hurricanes, had several critical failures out on the water. He loves it, I'm saying no thank you. But happy for him that he's doing what he loves in retirement.

Dads been a boat builder for the last 40 years. Builds luxury sailing boats, between 21ft and 43ft long. All of them have inboard motors too. Very good sailor too. I help him with building them and he helps me build my cars. We both know roughly how they both go together so if we have to we can do either job to a fairly decent standard. We both go sailing and it’s a bit of a passion of both of ours to be honest

Taylor, I've watched your channel for at least a couple years & your idea of sailing around the world and drifting different countries while vlogging all of it in my opinion would make you the best TH-camr out there. TH-camrs are normally busy seeing something else in person, saying "I wanna do that." and all of a sudden you see it on their channel. You've always shown passion for what you do, when, why & I've always enjoyed that but regardless of what you do, do what you're passionate about because that's what life should be about & what I believe has always made your channel unique. Keep that passion. Keep it real. & Keep building that Miata to be a BEAST!

Started sailing last year thanks to TH-cam channels ( sailing la vagabond). Racked up 3500 miles in a few months sailing the med.
It requires you to let go of a lot of creature comforts, to appreciate the little things and embrace the adventure. And be ready to put up with problem after problem and lots of hard work, sail changing at 4am in horrible conditions takes a lot out of you!
I’ll be getting my own 26ftr to single hand sail around the med in a few years I love it that much!

tell you this, i came to florida from new york when i was 18. i met a guy that became my best friend for years and his dad had a catamaran gemini. i guess they used to have a larger wooden catamaran (i forget the name but it was a zodiac sign) that, when he was a kid, his family sailed up and down the east and west cost every summer. he basically never had a summer break because he was out at sea. at that point ive never been on a sailboat in my life and his dad, him and me would go out and just sail around the gulf prolly once a moth. beside the ridiculous amount of sunburn it was some of the best times of my life that ill never forget. night time out on the water with no light pollution and to see the stars touch the sea, was absolutely amazing. im down to go sale the word with you bro!

i love sailing, i did never go on a big voiage, but i was on a 30 meter boat with like 20 people on it several times for 2 weeks each. there are companys that take you on sail boats and let you help on deck as much as you need. While such vacations are strongly dependent on the other participants, it is usually a great time and you can learn how to sail!

No Taylor the LKQ is a auto parts salvage yard company that buys wrecked vehicles and tear the engines, transmission, transfer cases and most all drive train out to sell the spots you say are machined are actually just some stamps you hammer in and if you see that tab on the freeze plugs on the back of the engine that is a heat tab for warranty purpose if it melts the lead center out then the engine was over heated and no longer under warranty only reason I know this is because I work in a salvage yard and we all do business with each other and we do the same stuff might be something on there saying PRP and that is just a nation wide part distribution more less

  • @turbohcar
    @turbohcar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Taylor, Ive worked for an auto recycler and typically with any engine or part you get from a recycler they will list the mileage the vehicle had, not the part itself, so that could be a lower mileage engine since (and I agree) it looks like an LKQ reman. As far as the casting number on the head, as far as I know LKQ doesn’t make their own aftermarket heads so that is likely just a head from a different truck.

The color of the engine is a direct representation to the maintenance that it recieved. Burnt black = 15k mile non synthetic oil changes. Golden color engine was taken care of very well. Yours looks like it was taken care of pretty well but had a oil change or two go pretty long hence the darker deposits.

I sailed in 2017 from California to Australia on a 37ft boat with my Dad and as a kid spend 3 years sailing around in Mexico. Spending weeks at a time on the open ocean without sight of land or any other people is something that can only be experienced, not described. I have restored 3 sail boats with my Dad over the years and with your experience working on cars, you will be well suited to the cruising lifestyle of fixing things in exotic locations with limited resources. Just like cars, the newer boats are on average not built simply and durably as the ones out of the '70's and '80's so you are better off buying a cheap old boat with good bones and replacing the wear items then spending a lot more on a newer boat (with some exceptions).

Anyone else think Taylor should install the new Comp Cams Max-Lift BSR shaft mount setup? Granted, they run $600 but shaft mount rockers seem like a no-brainer for a drift car engine.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the oiling solution is- If it were me I think I would opt for a minimalist dry sump system- I've read forum posts indicating it can be done utilizing the stock (well, stock-style but upgraded ideally) oil pump for pressure with an added scavenge pump.

Bought the same engine from the same place last year and they were an absolute nightmare to deal with. First of all, they delayed me picking it up multiple times for weeks, saying they had to do an inspection on it before I could pick it up. As soon as I pulled the heads off, it was full of water, rust, and mold (video on my channel about it). Emailed them with pictures of what I found to try to come to a resolution with them, and they freaked out on me, essentially saying it was my fault for disassembling the engine and I was shit out of luck. Eventually after a lot of back-and-forth, I left negative feedback on ebay and they called me immediately and asked how much money I wanted to remove the negative feedback. They even reported me to ebay, saying I was trying to extort them to avoid negative feedback. They were SUPER shady about the whole thing. Hopefully you have better luck than I did

The Black oil staining in LS motors is generally from lack of regular oil changes people changing the oil frequently enuff and relying on the oil change light and not on mileage from my 15 years plus years working with and on them as Chevy Tech. Looks like a LKQ put their stamp on it definitely not a remained unit and oil pan gasket replacement on those engines are common during extended warranty for seepage the casting number on the rear side of the head looks normal to me I've seen good casts of head numbers and poor casts not all are the same but it looks right to me

Run some Castrol gtx and after a few regular oil changes should clean that engine up and it will look brand new inside. Works everytime for me, I usually change my oil ever 2k miles.

Hey taylor, since the Miata is getting a new heart - would you ever consider putting the 5.3 in the Z if the VQ blows up? Your videos are very informative and comprehensive so I figured i’d ask in case you and I have similar plans for our Z’s 👀

I think you should rebuild the old engine for your cheap ls turbo you planned to do. I don't think the miata will need more power so it probably doesn't need a built engine.

If you think you would like sailing across oceans volunteer as crew on someones boat. I love sailing but large crossings can be a pain. My longest trip was 1100 miles from St Martin to Panama , then through the Canal, on a 43 foot Beneteau.

I’ve been a sailing instructor for 5 years, the plan is always to sail around the world.... someday. I keep telling myself that once I graduate from engineering I will reward myself with getting a large sailboat.

Tay, check out Gone With The Wynns channel. They recently went through the whole process of buying a boat, learning to sail and taking it out and around all the way from FLA to Tahiti! They are super informative as well as fun to watch.

Actually, motors aren’t just electric, they can also be vacuum or hydraulic. Anything that has maximum torque from zero rpm is considered a motor
