- We're in search for the BEST bacon butty in Britain as we take our narrowboat to Braunston on the Junction of the Grand Union Canal and Oxford Canal. Colin uncovers the disused London Section of the Great Central Railway and Braunston's old railways station, finds out why a toll collector had bells on a rope across the canal, and tells the story of the ghost of the Admiral Nelson pub. We cruise through Braunston Tunnel and find out why there are hooks in the roof.

Good Saturday morning from Portland, Oregon! I’ve just finished episode 168. Quality, not faff! That’s because the interesting, humorous, dedicated, and good-looking trio brings it to us! I’m about to enjoy my Saturday with my grand dogs-treats for them-sketching/painting watercolors for me, then spend the night and get a brand new buzz cut haircut tomorrow before they take me home. 21:13 - Right there you passed the site of one of my best and most vivid memories on the canal. In 2002, we were coming up from Milton Keynes way and did the Long Buckby flight with a wonderful couple from MK (this is what I love about the wide canals - meeting people as you go up the locks together). We got along so well with this couple that we agreed to moor and have dinner together. We moored right at this spot and crossed the bridge (Bridge 6) for the half mile walk up the hill to Welton, where we ate at the White Horse Pub. We think about that day and those wonderful people to this day. Thank you for bringing this memory back to mind.

Being from the US I had no idea what a Bacon Butty is... Looked it up on google right away for the recipe and came up with this from a group of researchers at the Department of Food Science at Leeds University. The formula is: N = C + {fb (cm) . fb (tc)} + fb (Ts) + fc . ta, where N=force in Newtons required to break the cooked bacon, fb=function of the bacon type, fc=function of the condiment/filling effect, Ts=serving temperature, tc=cooking time, ta=time or duration of application of condiment/filling, cm=cooking method, C=Newtons required to break uncooked bacon. I was like blah, blah, blah but in the end it equals good. Thanks guys, can't go wrong with bacon!

Man as soon as you did a overhead view of the marina the first thing that popped into my mind was “OMG that could be a narrowboat country club or spa with just a few more amenities….
But now the whimsical side of my mind has an idea….. instead of wasting all the pier space with hot tubs…. How about self propelled hot tubs? Take a 40 ft narrowboat hull and nose to tail put in a bunch of hot tubs into is and have someone in the marina just do a circuit and then a short cruise up and down the canal

Some 15 years ago - seems like a lifetime... I took my parents on a narrowboat trip for their 50th anniversary. Happy to say they are both well! We went on the canal where you are now. So many wonderful memories!! THANKS!!!

Many moons ago some friends and I hired a boat from Weltonfield Narrowboats by bridge 2 on the Leicester arm. When we took over the boat the day was a bit overcast but dry and pleasant. We were heading north on the GU and the owner accompanied us to Norton Junction to make sure everything was in order. As the hirer (ie, my name was on the paperwork) I had the tiller. We went trough the tunnel and as we approached the top lock one of my friends took over. It was at this precise moment that the skies opened and it rained all the way down the flight. He got wet, I didn't. :-)

12 years ago on our first ever narrowboat trip we ate at the admiral Nelson having cruised both ways through the braunston tunnel and had an amusing half hour watching our friend turn a 63ft boat in the junction afterwards - he wouldn't accept any help so we just watched the entertainment. Our residing memory is of very hard peas with our dinner at the admiral Nelson. Hope their cooking has improved with time
