Motorized Bike Coaster Brake Warning!

  • Today we made a 40 mile round trip on the motorized Huffy Cranbrook.
    On the return trip we found out what happens when you try to use a coaster brake at 30+mph!
    Turns out this build is good on gas by the way. At the end of our 40 mile trip we still had at least 5 miles left in the tank, giving this build a 80+MPG rating :)

    I was the guy that said sealed bearings where better. I forgot to tell you coaster breaks don’t hold up to super human speeds on the bike. I use mountain bike rims on my cruiser most all of them have sealed bearings and eliminates coaster breaks. My cranbrook is a five year daily rider except in snow. 20,000 + miles on fourstroke 49cc i broke three of those coaster break rims. There expensive, just go with mt bike rims and ignore the large gear cassette, i just run a tight chain on one gear. Way cheaper !

      @ebperformance8436 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about using a MTB rim….but their spokes are punny….and a CNC hub kills spokes’ even if you make a key….it rips the hub apart…then the spokes…it very annoying!

      How about those “heavy duty” 12 gauge spoked rims from bike berry? Are they any good?

      @@ebperformance8436 no you just had the wrong sized hub I run 3 of those rightnow on mtb rims. No damage,no key,no rubber,no jb weld. Just blue lock. Tite on a good hub with torque. On 55mph+ race bikes.

    I have a coaster brake on mine and have had zero issues. I think people are having trouble because they're leanin' on that pedal with every fiber of their being, and, having gone through more than a few coaster brakes for that reason, learned you can't do that. Gradual braking is key, and it also helps to have front brake assist, at any speed. This is all based on my own experience...

    I re-laced my stock steel clincher wheels with disc hubs and welded the caliper mounts onto the fork and frame. Although my welding skills are mediocre, they've held up well and give me more than enough confidence to slow down and stop quickly enough.

    coaster brakes work, just have to adjust once in awhile. Make sure lock nuts are tight on cone nuts!! they do not spin unless the lock nuts were not tight to begin with.

  • @jcodaniel5678
    @jcodaniel5678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good job keeping it upright.
    Coaster brake failure can ruin your day. If that’s all you have run it just remember to periodically pedal even though you’re not with cadence of the bikes current speed pedaling slowly to keep that thing from building heat. Keyword pedal slowly and not too fast you may throw your chain off.

    Those tower thingies are loading posts for Traction sand, in tough situations where the rails are wet, covered in leaves, etc... Both steam and diesel electric locomotives have air driven sanders that shoot sand in between the rail and the wheel to boost traction.

    I had this happen 2 times... do not trust coaster brakes at high speeds! I was going down a road at about 35mph when it locked up on me completely. I did not fall, thank god, but I ended up grinding my tires into oblivion. I did take the brake plates out, and slapped a disk brake on.

    I don't use coster brakes on motorized bicycles. The first time I had the little screw vibrate loose holding down the break arm, the brake arms starts spinning a million miles an hour till the hub seizes up. Once was enough for me. I take the brake arms off and use a C break.

      @@LAHover thanks. So I’m going to be a first time builder and planning on getting a cranbrook and zeda 80 firestorm. What should I replace right from the jump? Delete the coaster brakes for dual caliper / hand brakes? Will I have to adjust the crank arms? Do you know of any videos with a guide to this since so many people end up getting rid of the coaster brakes? I am a first time builder and new to this so I am scared to get the cranbrook and not know what to do with it to make it more safe. I posted in your discord as well

    The 40:1 is slightly richer than 32:1 and back in my racing days, we would do that to change fuel mixture a half jet size. It's not much of a difference, but you can tell easily between 25:1 and 50:1.

    My coaster brake also failed while I was driving downhill.
    Almost had an accident thanks to the Coaster Brake itself even though it failed I was saved by it because the Hub locked inside and the wheel don't spin anymore and that's why it stopped me downhill for being a destroyed but still brakes.
    The rpm burned the mechanicals inside the hub, the high heat caused to dried all the lubes and destroyed my brake.
    I'm only using a China Coaster Hub.
    Only last 1 month on Motorized Bike.

    Your mix change is definitely the difference in your high rpm knock/ping.
    Go back to your 32:1 and enjoy, the power gain is insignificant if your tuned for the mix right, which it is at your old mix.
    As to filing the key, yeah it can be done, but be prepared to crack the case regular to reset it and lock it down, the vibes will not allow it to stay set long

    Beach cruisers make the perfect gas bike….but the damn coaster brakes sucks.
    A rear beach cruiser spokes are heavy duty, and a CNC hub is perfect….but the back rim always comes loose and wobbles….I might find a way to make it a free will and put lever brakes on the damn thing.
    I even rebuilt the damn thing….and back the coaster brake insert lever is shedded…I miss the last cruiser I sold, I ended up welding a plate on the rim itself, and used a MTB rim….You can also get a phat motto back rim…their $125 bucks but they are one of the best gas bike rims you can buy….and it has the ability to have disk brakes….You will see them on every phat motto 4 Stroke bike….it’s one hefty rim!

    Let it be a lesson to everyone who don’t want to die do not put a motor on a bike with coaster breaks.had he been in Traffic he would have possibly died.

    Okay so I have a beach cruiser and it has coaster brakes I guess that's the pedal brakes I'm not really sure but I'm wondering if that would be okay to have on the bike with a motor please somebody answer me back

    • @LAHover

      Yes, but try to and some rim brakes if you can. Coasters can fail during emergency stops. Also make sure both cone nuts on the rear wheel are properly adjusted after installing the rear sprocket.

    In my sport once you out of motor you forget to work out and you find yourself using the motor all the time I imagine it's the same thing with bicycles that's why I deleted the motor on all my vehicles
