All those startup / welcome videos and their various songs bring back some memories. I used to work at an agency during this period and we deployed upwards of 1,000 macs. For a long time it wasn't possible/easy to image them, so we'd have banks of them setup with install discs and then these songs going off seconds apart as someone clicked Accept on the first, then second, then third, etc etc etc. 10.5 was easily the worst one of them all. Thanks for the 00's memories Ross
What is striking to me is how modern the TiBook STILL looks. If it was a bit thinner and lighter and had a webcam, it would fit right in with the Macs of today. One could argue that design-wise that that (lighter, thinner TiBook with modern ports/processor/camera) is essentially the MacBook Pro today.
there is just something oddly satisfying about listening to the update process of all of the different versions of MacOS. The spinning of the disk, the clicking of the trackpad, the types of the keyboard. Not only is this video high quality and high effort, but also like a strange kind of ASMR that's oddly satisfying to listen to. Amazing video 10/10.
@@tompov227 gross I can’t agree on Mavericks. But Tiger to Leopard was magical and Snow Leopard really cemented it. My Core 2 Duo MacBook felt fast with a crappy HDD. I really hope Apple goes back to a proper tic toc cycle and does a modern day Snow Leopard optimisation.

@@tompov227 I recall installing Mavericks on a MacBook Pro and thinking it was slow because MacOS was indexing. But it just never came good. Nice video. I loved the 10.4 part, brought so many memories of me using my mom’s MacBook Pro 1,1. We never upgraded so it stayed with 10.4 and still has it to this day. I have that MacBook now, and it made me a vintage Mac collector.
Say what you will about Apple's business practices and their decline these days, but man, back in the day they really knew how to make products beautiful, software included.

I've watched many videos of upgrading Windows 1.0 to 11, but never of macOS. This is so cool! I'm glad that TH-cam recommended it. Such a great video and explanations!
Thanks for the comment, and yes absolutely. The changing architectures and partition schemes pose a different challenge from that over on the Windows PC side of things. I’d say completing this upgrade chain on real Macs was in fact easier than the time I did it with virtual machines. Of course, acquiring older hardware and software can be tricky. Already having everything certainly helped, just had to get that iBook - the Indigo iMac G3’s been long gone. Starting at System 1.0 (0.97 or whatever), and upgrading on real Macs is next. My best option to show both the entirety of Classic Mac OS and UNIX macOS would be to do the first half, perhaps both, in arrangement with a museum. Fortunately, I know of one - they have all the Macintoshes and possibly original install media too, so stay tuned…
@@RossDarkerOMG! That would be so awesome! Your software collection is also impressive; you have boxes in great condition. I've already subscribed and am looking forward to new videos. Greetings from Mexico! I wish you the best. Thank you for your content!

This video is amazing! I enjoy watching the upgrade process, and I love seeing all the different MacBooks from through the years.. 2000s tech is just amazing❤
Nice video and very thorougly enmarked. Unsure if the process can have a follow up with a better version of the famous "Time Machine" that hasn't been deployed smoothly nowadays!
In retrospect I think I like Leopard's and Snow Leopard's design the best. At the time I felt it al was a bit too grey and business-like compared to Tiger. I missed the brushed metal finder windows and the aqua buttons, but later I started to like it very much. I wish Apple would go back to that design a bit, a bit more 3D and textured, not as flat. Luckily they still kept the shadow under the windows.
That won't work, because NeXT and Apple had different boot procedures, it was impossible to boot OPENSTEP on Macintosh up until the release of Rhapsody and Mac OS X Server
I wish you had created some files, import music, created playlists, added some photos, create documents, spreadsheets to see how those survive the upgrades especially moving from architecture.

For now, TH-cam’s speed setting is OK; used it for checking over the video the final time. Some clips may sound odd when played back at fast speeds however.
