That’s how titles at banks work. In their case they work in m&a for an investment bank. The usual career track is analyst > associate > vice-president > director > Managing director > partner. Bigger banks will have literally hundreds of vice-presidents between their different offices.

I can see how this scene became such a meme. It's just a bunch of little boys having a pissing contest with cards that basically look exactly the same. Mixed with the dead serious performances and you have one of the greatest memes of all time.

@@WailOfDoomThe point of the scene is that all the cards do look extremely similar (they're pretty much identical apart from the fact that they use different fonts and the shade of white, although different, is barely noticeable) but Bateman's psycopathic narcissism inclines him to have the urge to he the best at everything. EVERYTHING. That includes having the best looking business card, even though it's something that would be completely frivolous to a normal person

More intriguing is the fact that only Patrick's card lacks a space in Pierce &Pierce (which, again, nobody notices, not even him), and uses numbers that vary in size and don't get horizontally aligned...
Regarding the alignment of the numbers on Patrick’s card, there are some fonts that horizontally ‘center’ the Various numbers slightly differently. Makes it look a little more fancy.

@@waynereloaded87It works well as a satirical commentary on the yuppie culture combined with mindless materialism with a bit of humour and dark moments, but apart from that it really isn't a good or bad movie, i'd personally call it average.
@@ok.6539 Its literally, Literally a movie that doesnt have to be watched. You could just also listen to this movie and it could be still considered watched. Since 99% of the movie is talking. 50% of the talkings are at dinner tables where they talk about their work humour and work in a way that we still dont know anything about their work. If the talking partner is with a woman, then its just talking about the work or relationship. Examples: "We should get married" or "we shouldnt see eachother anymore". Either way, its just mostly doesnt contribute for the for the plot.
The only relevand dialogues are the ones about the investigation and the ones before the killing

That's another funny detail. He is probably the most popular dude because he is the one who gives the least fuck about anyone and does not even remember their name. They all strive for approval so hard, that they rank the guy who needs the least approval at the highest place. That's why the guy that gives Batemen too much praise/attention gets the harsh "your compliment was sufficient" comment :D If you're nice in that hierarchy you're automatically at the bottom. It's astonishing how much of this macho world they packed into the scene and so accurate.

In reality, Patrick had the most attractive card.
The numbers were uniquely spaced and interesting, not uniform, in a visually pleasing way.
The rest of the font styling was classic and elegant.
The paper had no intentional texture applied (unlike Van Patten's or Bryce's card), which made it look smoother and higher quality.
The shade of white was crisp yet natural.
Paul Allen's card was basic and boring - nothing special.
All things considered, I liked Patrick's card the best. I've been designing my own business cards for 20 or so years, it's something I really enjoy. So I have a natural appreciation for business card aesthetics.

In all honesty, Batemen’s card looks the best and the most expensive one too - very official and rich in a very subtle way.

This is such an unsettling movie. Literally every scene is just unnerving for some reason
Analysis of the cards by a print shop manager: Bateman's card is actually the shittiest. It's a Garamond style typeface, meaning he basically let the printer choose and printer was lazy. Spacing is off with too much headroom and less than 1/8" safe area on the bottom. Looks jumbled.
Van Patten's card has a better typeface but it's a basic black ink color and it's flat printing, meaning he asked the printer for the cheapest card option (printed on copier). Covered up his lack of expensive printing by using a textured stock but again went with the cheapest 'fancy' stock option (woven Laid). Spacing with the headers and footers are off, almost the inverse of the Bateman card with too much footer space and not enough headroom. Also footer type is too condensed and the margins don't match the headers.
Bryce's card has the best typeface but the exact same spacing problems as Bateman; too much headspace and a huge gap between center mainline and footer. Also used a textured Laid stock but the funny thing is the printer printed the card on the back of the sheet instead of the raised side.
Allen's card is... alright I guess. Good ink color, decent stock. What stands out is the footer has been turned into two center-justified lines which sets the card in an unbalanced, top-heavy shape. Not a lot of margin space up at the top. That and whoever cut the cards either did it by hand or this card was at the bottom of the stack because the edges are jagged as hell. Probably by hand because the margins are off.
Overall none of the cards are that special.

I love how there’s so much tension when they compare each other’s cards. Who’d have thought stupid little business cards could have such an effect on Patrick? It’s so pathetic yet so hilariously chilling to watch.

The thing that makes this scene is how they actually care. To just about anyone outside of that room, they're all the same card aside from a different font and maybe a different shade of white if you're looking at it with the right lighting. But that's the point. These guys are supposed to be a satire of the uptight yuppie folks that you'd expect to work in those jobs

So I rewatched it back in 2022 and now it's one of the greatest movies off all time ever seen! God this movie is so good.

Great scene. First things first, why did Timothy Brice need Paul ALLEN's card to play squash? Each of these guys has the same exact telephone number, address, title, (Vice President) and department (Mergers & Acquisitions) at Pierce and Pierce, listed on their cards. Second, Patrick Bateman's card had a typographical error, in that the ampersand between Pierce & Pierce is missing a space after it, so it is listed as Pierce &Pierce. Silian Rail is an actual typesetting font, as is Romalian. I carry business cards, but haven't used one in years. Also strange: When Paul ALLEN calls Patrick Bateman "Halberstram," then subsequently "Marcus," why doesn't anyone else notice or correct him? I mean, this plot device is necessary later on, but still.
It is a parody of the narc, born and raised into narcissism. Parents didn't validate them, in fact, they scolded them if they made them look bad to the other parents. They will forever live empty lives of one-upmanship. It is all fake. Fake friendships, fake meetings, fake titles, fake lives. The entire opening scene of the movie is the foundation of this plight. They are the only ones that care to compete with each other. Narcissists breed new narcissists in a cycle of lack of parental love. The typos in the cards and missing space in Bateman's card, unnoticed by the characters, highlights the fact that the common man, those that Bateman's crew disregard, can see all of their flaws. They are blinded to their own flaws. That is why they all have the typos and no one notices except the audience watching.

the film presents this in a deliberately exaggerated way, but in a way, yes.
If you want to charge someone a lot for your services, it does help to "look the part," and details matter.
Appearing to be different from the norm is not always a bad thing, but it's definitely something people will notice. I'm not a rich guy, but I have some experience dealing with higher-level types, and if a "Vice President" handed me a cheap, crappy business card, it would make me suspicious.
Conversely, the richest and most powerful people in a room are often the most poorly-dressed, careless individuals in the room, because they aren't trying to impress anyone - they can show up in sweat pants and write their phone number in lipstick on toilet paper, and that's fine, because they're the ones with the real money. In my experience, they also often have bad breath, probably because no one wants to tell them how bad their breath is.
I always skip the dog part, because I lose all love for Bateman after that
Despite everything, I think Patrick’s card is the most tasteful/elegant.
Having worked for a bulge bracket firm on Wall Street a few years after this is set and around the time the movie came out, it was very confusing that mid level drones like these would have any say over their business cards… and hilarious that the cards have “Acquisitions” misspelled - lack of attention to *that* kind of detail would be career limiting or at least reputation impacting
If I was an actor, I would never perform this scene. This is just evil.
So everyone is a vice president in that company, I would be more annoyed about that than the card
VPs are nothing at an investment bank. It’s one of the lower titles - often comprised of mid 20s know-it-alls who think they will own Wall Street one day. It’s a perfect character detail in this story
