  • From Fremont, California to the major leagues -- and now just named as a starter for this year's MLB all-star game. We’re hearing from Steven Kwan, who currently holds the highest batting average in the league at .364.
ABC7 News anchor Dion Lim talked to Steven about representation in sports, his favorite Bay Area food spots, and his love for the game.

Both Ohtani and Kwan have made it but completely different paths. I'd say what Kwan has done is quite remarkable in that he came through the American system, being an Asian American he could've easily have been overlooked, having to deal with the racism, proving himself must not have been easy, plus the Asian culture of going into a more secure profession, yet he still made it despite all of this and starting in an All-Star game having the highest batting average. He doesn't get enough shine.

You guys are not alone rooting for Steven. Everybody loves a hard-working, modest, hustling little guy who doesn't strike out - and is a role model for their kids. It's great that you have a special connection to this young man, but Steven is a hero to kids of all races and nationalities. My first hero was Black and spoke a different language - Roberto Clemente. Long before some people in society tried to teach 6-year-old me about how other people were "different," I was imitating his batting stance (and his accent) and wanted to be just like him. Steven Kwan is doing the same thing for a new generation of American kids.

The questions towards the end though... Of course he would if he grew up a Giants but do you have to ask it?
He can't throw shade to the organization that believed in him first and cuts his checks. He's on his way becoming a star on a team that's in first. Don't start controversy for him.

I think representation in sports is going to depend more on parents tbh...just going off the astounded reaction this reporter had to hearing Kwan's parents didn't literally force him to go the traditional route like most of them are forced to lol
Not bashing the safe option but supporting kids to follow their own path isn't the end of the world either.

    We successfully destroyed affirmative action.
We must destroy hamfisted forced diversity.

How do you make sure we don't go back to our old ways where we just hire white men over anyone else regardless of merit? Because historically that's what happened. It would just go back to that.

kinda disgree with some parts of your statement.. sure about the mlb roster spot part.. but he grew up in an era where everything you listed existed and still made it through.. (no one can be sure if he even benefited from anything you've listed while growing up...) as someone that is of a colored minority.. i see both sides of the coin for all those things you've listed.. there are situations which i believe affirmative action is needed.. for example medicine.. how many asian GP's want to live and serve a all white or all black community in the heart of the south?.. very very few.. also there are cultural and language barriers.. (esp. for example old asian grandma's that speak little english and want to talk to a doctor that understands them and not some "translator" or random nurse...)..

You just missed the point. Kwan had just about no one who looked like him in major sports he could lead him to believe he could make it. No Asian Americans. You need representation so other Asian American kids can be inspired to believe in themselves and pro sports can be an option.

Having an Asian American background is very different from being from Asia. Ichiro like Shohei are from Japan, the culture is completely different especially when in comes to baseball. There are different unique circumstances in various American communities and people. Like the pressures of Asian American families that don't typically respect trying to be an athlete or artist. Take Jeremy Lin and Yao Ming. They are completely different in background and personal story.

Not all Asians are the same. Japan has been producing exceptional baseball talent for a long time, but it's pretty rare for Asian Americans to succeed in the MLB.
It's like saying why is it a big deal that two of the best NBA players right now are from Central Europe when white guys like Larry Bird and Steve Nash have long since excelled in the NBA? Jokic and Doncic represent a completely new pool of talent that's starting to make its way into the NBA, and that's exciting for obvious reasons.
