You can see the coldness and pain in his expressions from having to leave Estelle. But here it's just happy and cheerful Joshua, kind of doesn't fit.
That´s why the voice acting is the only meaningful improvement EVO offers. The new portraits don´t look bad, but they significantly reduced every character´s amount of expressions. Especially Estelle lost a lot. So it´s ideal to keep the original portraits and just modding the voice lines in.

I played the original recently, and used a mod that adds the voice lines from evo to every scene, and imo it works much better that way
Yep, i just added the EVO voices but kept the original portraits they were a much better fit.
