- We recently partnered up with DJI to test their new OSMO Mobile 2, a three-axis smartphone stabilizer that allows users to create cinematic videos, straight on their smartphone - device can be found here click.dji.com/...
When DJI approached me for this project, I realized that the practical application was already there for the average consumer, so I decided to veer this video in a direction that made more sense in my eyes: Is this device going to save me time without compensating for quality?
We spent ten days, across two countries, filming and editing this video. We challenged the device's versatility to see its capabilities & limitations.
We placed it in an adventure setting in the Dominican Republic, an amplified-lifestyle setting in Trinidad & Tobago, then challenged the workflow by wrapping the entire project before returning home.

Chasing Summer Productions yup! I preordered one after watching this, I’m SO excited for hyperlapses.
I would suggest locking the head, and using the thumb controller for panning when you do. Similar to a hyperlapse on a DSLR, use the grids to establish your focal point and do your best to keep the focal point in the exact spot where it started. Also, always always always manually set your shutter, ISO, and WB - this will alleviate all flicker from the device.
Chasing Summer Productions great advice! I’ll do all of these things when it arrives (BH should ship soon...). I’ve done hyperlapses with DSLRs and they’re definitely a time-consuming pain.

Great video. This is by far the best example of what is possible with the OM2 that I have seen.
Dude - amazing work, Taylor. Your work speaks for itself. You have an amazing talent and knowledge base to do all of this! We use our DJI Osmo for Jeep videos, but we know VERY little about all of the equipment options available out there. I can’t say how cool this video is!

Awesome video dude! I just got my drone license (Yes in South Africa you need a drone license - the same as getting a Private Pilots license) and I started filming. I come from a videography background so I understand that you cannot just have drone footage. My problem was that I had spent a lot of dosh on the license (about $3000), some more on the drone (another $3000) and then I needed a DSLR. But then i remembered i was packing an Iphone X 256G - so why not use a gimble (the Osmo) and professional lenses for my phone? UEREKA! I'm just learning to film and compile my vids, so thanks a mil for this awesome tutorial. I'll be watching a lot more of your stuff. Cheers! Happy Filming

Sorry I missed your comment but I do the vasttt majority in FCPX - the new update for color grading is incredibleee - any graphic design stuff is After Effects and any additional touches is in Premier Pro!
Does the charging port of the mobile support the charging of other devices, such as an external mic, for example, Zoom H1N?
Wowzers! I should get my OM2 today in the mail! Love your video, really well made and love the music. Would you say the OM2 was the equipment you used the most to shoot this video? I see you used other cameras and equipment in the description, so I'm curious about if the OM2 alone will product this kind of footage. Thanks!
Good question! About 85% of this video was filmed on the Osmo Mobile 2 - the only shots that were NOT filmed on the OM2 were the "behind the scenes" & drone shots. So, to answer your question, the vast majority of this film was recorded on the Osmo Mobile 2!

How did you avoid the problem of iPhone and jittering using a gimbal?

Unfortunately the internal stabilizer in the iPhones are what cause the jitter - there was a lot of backlash on Apple for releasing this feature before perfecting it. What I found was slow mo made the jitter especially pronounced, whereas full speed didn't jitter at all. If you do your best to balance the gimbal you should be able to partially alleviate this issue - I believe the new iPhones have a better built-in stabilizer but, having an 8Plus, I experienced the same issues.

Absolutely! The bit that holds your phone is adjustable!
how did you get it to look like your subject is gliding at 3:05, the feet barely move which is a cool effect. was he just taking a step at each interval that the camera is taking a shot?
.5 second photo interval captures a lot of movement - if you play around with the time remapping you can almost always make it look like the subject is gliding!
