This is the perhaps the pinnacle of knowledge from Dave about lightweight hammock camping. I have looked seriously at experimenting with hammock camping but I never arrive. The simplicity of rolling out a pre-stuffed bivy on a groundmat is just too convenient. If there are bugs I get in the bivy and pull a hat-shaped bug net over my head. If there is constant heavy rain I can rig a small tarp into a plough and put my head and gear under it. If it continues to rain I go home... Even 2 -3 nights on the ground with a bivy I can change my location in 2 mins. I suppose I am lazy, finding a nice site and rolling out a bivy gives me more time to enjoy nature.....perhaps I would think different if I was in the jungle, but in Sherwood Forest these days you can't even find a rabbit to crawl over your bivy

Hammock for me 90% of the time. I’ve often thought about taking the bed out of my travel trailer and just hanging a hammock. I sleep great but the girlfriend hates sleeping on the floor with the dog. So thats a big NO.😂. In all truth the hammock is my first choice every time. Thanks Dave

This is all a great idea. What I have done, largely following this video, was to sort of make a hybrid of this. Considering that I pack the majority of what is here, this is what I chose for a shelter option, for either hanging OR ground: I have a Dutchware Chameleon, with the bug net. Instead of an underquilt, I actually bought a Klymit inflatable hammock pad, made specifically for hammocks. This gives me the option of EITHER hanging from the hammock, OR going to ground. I carry a tyvek sheet at all times-which is used as a ground sheet for the pad if going to ground, or to step on under the hammock, as needed. As for the tarp, I have a Warbonnet mini fly, which, in truth, I have not yet tried out, but recently bought, and can be used in either situation. This way, its the best of both worlds.

Excellent video, Dave. Ive been testing and tweaking gear for decades. I thought I had it sussed but this video has me questioning my hammock and tarp suspension systems. Back to the drawing board! I love the idea of Dyneema but it is nigh on impossible to get here in the UK. I look forward to it becoming as readily available as it is in the US.
I love the hammock with net and tarp setup, it's so light and makes all the issues with the ground go away, don't care anymore if it's wet, rocky, cold, etc. Hanging the down insulator under the hammock is genius, I was using a heavy synthetic bag in the hammock cus mats didn't fit well but I can't wait to try this.
Great video as usual Dave! I've been camping with the poles through a couple of 6mill bags that I've used for 4 years resting on tripods. Love it , very comfy . But at 64 yrs. Old, thinking about switching to a hammock system.

I do follow several people, and most agree, you are one of if not the best. I have used your TH-cam videos to get me started and teach new lessons. But nothing beats dirt time. One issue I seem to have is keeping things cold in the summer and warmer months when I’m out in the woods for a couple days. Would it be possible to get some advice on how you would do it please? Even if it’s a video. lol. Thank you for any help. I am working on my skills and fitness so I may take your classes. I would like to patch all of them.
So odd thing to throw out i know but instead of a toggle or hook for hanging my bag for convenience, i carry at least one SOFT-W tourniquet on my left shoulder strap of my bag, pretty much ever bag. I use that on a tree or pole, not twisted tight just snug hooked in and it works great for me so far.
A very interesting look at a hammock/hiking loadout. Talking about waiting for gear: I'm eagerly waiting for your store to release the uneven/swivel tent pole sets you previewed in your heat management video! I hope it works with a decent-sized tarp rather than relying on a poncho.

WarBonnet Outdoors has straps with buckles for around $23 that will be way lighter than those double layer straps, and they slide to adjust. Been using mine for years and they've held up really well. Spliced a ducthware titanium hook onto the endless loops and they hook right onto the hammock.
Dave just want to add a little trick I found for the zipper of your hammock put a string on the inside zipper pins and I find it easier to close the zipper while laying in it
nice vid. i found the befree filter works better on the 2L bag with no leaks. the cnoc bag i have did not seal well for me. also, i carried my FIRST 2L dirty bag in my shovel pocket , but somehow i poked a hole in it. now i carry it inside my pack or in a stuff sack.

May I humbly suggest some Father Nomad glowing lanterns for zipper pulls. A welcome addition for when you gotta pee at night and the bugnet has other ideas.

Put a small o-ring around the top of your lighter, with it under the gas button. It prevents it accidentally degassing inside your bag.
