Well thought out system. I was in the Air Force. Went through flight school and developed the habit of carrying "no go" items-- items you don't leave home without. Nomex flight suit, knife, flashlight, flight checklist and a few other items. After getting out of the Air Force I use to have bad dreams because I wouldn't carry certain items. The only way to cure it was to carry them minus the flight checklist. Damn those habits. It was either that or not get any sleep.
Great info on the Wazzo hat. In my old unit, we used to cut pieces of a VS-17 signal panel to insert into our patrol cap or helmet. Provided a somewhat unidirectional method of signaling air support. I've never seen someone build that feature into a cap before. Additionally, I like the way they line the bottom of the brim with black cloth to absorb reflected sunlight and keep it from being bounced back into your eyes. Very well thought out design. Impressive enough I replaced my previous hat with one.

Daves been my gear guy for over a decade. I figured eventually hed get onto the darn tough socks. I bought 7 pairs one for everyday of the week and been wearing them for over 10 years now. Everytime i wear them through they replace them very good investment. They start off feeling like youre walking on pillows
I love this! What ive done to help with cordage is (although it may look strange). I wrapped about 6 ft of paracord around my ankle,like a bracelet. It rides literally on me 24/7. Showers and all, so in case im in need of extra emergency cordage..its attached to me. Awsome job Dave! 👍
My EDS includes an Samsug Tab S9+, a 10k Anker battery, a Kershaw Chill knife, rubber bands, small supermarket bags folded really small, 6 way charger and diverse cables, Rolex GMT Master two tone, painkillers (had a big skydiving accident), Letion flashlight, bic lighter, 38 Special S&W body guard model (I live in Mexico), !eatherman Rebar, vape, vape juice, Hewlett Packard calculator, horse riding boots and gloves, 100 yards of synthetic gut cord folded really small, chewing gum. That's it. Oh, Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean (for going out on the street).

Back in the 80’s, it was a wind up watch, paper road map, compass, a roll of quarters, jumper cables, a spare tire, basic car tools, snow chains, shovel, cat litter, a warm blanket, extra food and water, extra warm clothing, rain jacket, flash light, batteries, towel (never leave home without it!), first aid kit, and flares. Today I have too many electronic devices so I now need cables, battery packs, smart watch, smart phone, etc. If I don’t share my Google map or Strava a rout with my family, they worry. 😂

I edc the outrider as well along with some knipex pliers. The Costco work socks are amazing and I have never worn out those. Also the Costco elastic belt is great for a makeshift tourniquet. I agree with everything else and will get a carving Jack as well. Spot on.
Makes sense. I noticed my EDC wasnt really changing except for whim. When you have a system dialed in its pretty epic. Folks who change up the whole thing everyday just mystify me on how they can keep track of what they can do with what they got
Excellent video! 7:30 EDS makes a lot of sense. If one truly does have an EDC, it is part of a larger EDS. The "systems" approach delivers great value. For each person that approach has different solutions. Ironically, after watching Dave's TV shows, videos, and reading his books, I almost never wear jeans anymore. Just like the versatile fisherman's shirt, I've moved to same with other garments and footwear. I try to get ones with the compound pockets, but I prefer internal organizer pockets vs external rider pockets. I understand Dave's jean preference and that is his choice for his lifestyle.
Got 2 of the Scout Canteen's. These things rock. Kept 1 stock , painted the other with Krylon high heat max. So one to use on the fire and one to fill with fire water.
I’ve got some olllllld Darn Tough socks with alot of miles on them from day to day service, ruck matches, CFT’s and such. Still going strong. Farm to Feet socks and Grip 6 socks are excellent as well, and made here in the USA.
I love the 111mm Saks for the outdoors!! However, the most versatie combo that can cover the most, is an Explorer and a Spirit X ! They only share 1 tool that is the same on both. The rest are all different!
I also have things that I have carried everyday for years, on my belt, in my pants and shirt pockets and they all get used. Maybe not everyday but they are handy when needed.
Exofficio boxers are awesome! I’ve worn for 5 years, almost all the same pairs, lost one. They are expensive but are definitely worth the invest. Great in all weathers and super comfortable
Darn tough socks are fantastic. They are the only socks I wear. I wanted to really test them and wore the same pair for a week and they were awesome. Never smelled feet stayed good. Only time I've ever had an issue was when people steal them.
Dave--Love your EDS. I love my darn tough socks, I actually use a knock off of an IWC that the Top Gun graduates use as a watch (I didn't know that until after I watched the movie lol, I just liked the big numbers and it being a chronograph) and I also love my Extremeus electric lighter/flashlight/cordage/whistle. I also am going to look into those shoes, I have been wearing OluKai's because I bought a pair of flip flops from them that has lasted me nearly 10 years of daily use around the house and I spend about 120 dollars on their shoes every 2 years. I need to upgrade my swiss army knife because it doesn't have tweezers or a toothpick.
I've always kept to the same system, though I've never thought of it as a system. It does add on through the seasons too. For seven months of the year I'll wear polyester baselayers. I'll just wear the same type of cheap cotton tee-shirt and a fleece jacket. For most if the year I'll have with me a Falkland Ventile Jacket, or wearing or carrying in my hand. My trousers are always Dickies work trousers with holster pockets. I wear a handmade heavy duty belt, with a belt-loop and clip holding my keys, which then ride, doubly secured in one of the holster pockets. I also carry a small bottle of water in a holster pocket (sometimes two) and my reading glasses. I have a wallet with cash and cards in a trouser pocket and my phone in the other, coins in a small side pocket. In my fleece jacket I carry a cotton buff, my inhaler, a small torch (most of the time) and a lighter. In my coat pocket I'll have a beanie hat or cap. My socks are a very heavy duty wool mix type that last ages and are comfortable in all our seasons. I always wear boots, normally Scarpa, occasionally Lowa; but even if I'm going somewhere with demands to be more presentable, I'll wear CAT boots, so that I do have decent protection no matter what. For about 8 months of the year I'll add a scarf too.
Hi Dave, another TH-camr suggested that an alox classic sod will fit into the tiny pocket on the side of the brim. It’s a tight squeeze. I carry one there in my cache cap, yes, I wear them also, and I find it comes in handy. I keep it scalpel sharp and only pull it out for purposes where a scalpel would be useful. I’ll make a video and post it for you to clarify because I’m sure my description leaves much to be desired!
If you can get by without the scissors, a SAK Forester is about half the price of the Outrider shown here. I paid about $40 on Amazon for a black Forester. If y'all are looking for a kinda similar button up to what Dave is wearing, I recommend the ones at Academy Sports. I have had a few "fishing" shirts from them that have the vent in the back and similar pockets that have held up well over the past few years. Not all of them are earth tones but the ones I picked out are. The biggest difference is no zipper for the sleeves gotta go short or roll em up. And those Darn Tough socks have a good warranty that I never heard of anyone using. So even though they cost me a lot for the ones I have I figured they will be worth it. So far they have lived up to their name. That cap is a cool setup and if I get one I might have to take the fresnel lens out of my wallet and put it in there. Dave is definitely a good source for ideas, and the clipper compass on the back is one I will have to use for myself.
I have a similar system of the core items in my pockets. In my wallet I have two EDS items. 2 or 3 floss picks. These are MUCH more useful than a SAK toothpick for dislodging something that is stuck in your teeth. 2 to 3 "H" bandaids. Over time, these have been the most useful for everyday scrapes and cuts.
My eds is a watch pocket knife ( small three blade ).. hip knife OR good folder always a belt.. (skinny guy) ..( location in mind).. And 6 to 8 ft of 3/ 16"or 1/4"braided cordage ( piece of rope) BIC Lighter And a couple needles in my wallet with upholstery thread ( strong as hell).. wrapped around a piece of box board.. and a little pencil..( I'm a carpenter).. bug out / get home bag loaded in my truck.. ( which has a bow tie on it and everyone before it... ( we like what we like) .... My 2 cents worth.. Boreal forest Northern Ontario CANADA..
That’s a great system. Very well thought out.. I don’t know what the toggle is made out of, but was thinking maybe a small chunk of fat wood would be a handy multi purpose material to make it from… Thank you for sharing..
One additional piece of my everyday carry/system that I carry is my wallet which is a must have anyway but I have been able to add to it and keep extra items in it is my wallet. I use a hard sided wallet called the flipside 4 which I am able to carry in my front pocket and it’s very light weight but I am able to carry more than just cash and cards with me that helps since I have to have it with me all the time anyway.
EDS is fine. I change if I am wearing cargo shorts, cargo pants or lined cargo pants throughout the year... and from t-shirt, to cardigan to hoodie with or without jacket for many of the same reasons. I even have a winter hat and a different hat for the rest of the year. As far as what I keep on my person, I'm surprised that I keep 'more'. I wear irish setter boots, with a boot knife and two small reflective pouches for carrying whatever I might need to add. The laces are replaced with extra long hanks of Titan SurvivorCord with handcuff keys. Thick wool socks, good for both summer and winter needs, folded over and over for summer, pulled knee high for winter if required. Cargo pants or shorts, either way enough places to store things. Top left pocket has an Aurora A3 650 Lumen rechargeable flashlight, right pocket will have paracord bracelet lanyard with a keychain multitool and a Gerber Dime, it has a built in striker for a ferro rod. Cargo pockets will include a multi-color pen, right-in-rain notepad, wallet, phone, larger black energizer TAC-300 flashlight, larger pocket knife. On the belt will be a length of SurvivorCord with a ferro rod toggle along with a larger multi-tool. The belt itself is a cargo device and hides a signal mirror,1 liter plastic bags, water purification tablets, pouch of sanitizer, matches, strikers, fishing line, sinkers, hooks, fake bait, band-aids, alcohol swabs, triple-antibiotic ointment, simple flat metal saw blade, razor, emergency whistle, needle, thread, paper money, some change and a couple of painkillers. I replaced all the drawstrings in my (winter) hoodies with extra long hanks of SurvivorCord that I braid to make the right length and have ferro toggles on most of them. I do use a digital watch (not a smart watch though) which also has altimeter (pressure based), compass, RF time setting and it charges via solar. I have had the watch for many years and the rechargeable battery is still working great, does well charging from indoor lighting too. My hats do not do anything special. I do have one with pockets and one with a solar panel and built in headlamp, but I don't 'wear' those unless it's a special occasion where they are called for. I wear a flat cap and have made one of them, if I make another one then I will probably include a pocket or two into it, all that requires with this kind of hat is to put velcro somewhere since the inside is basically a large pocket anyway. Then there is the tiny backpack or the large backpack, which I'm not even going to get into :) I'm somewhat surprised how often some of these items come in handy when you actually have them on you all the time. The little Gerber Dime alone with it's knife, pliers, tooth pick, tweezers and bottle opener alone is quite handy!

A good back up tourniquet is a roll of electrical tape. I definitely still have a CAT always since you do need a stick for the tape. Just lay said stick along the limb tape a bunch of wraps around both limb and stick. Twist tight and tape the stick in place write the time on the tape. Quite a few in a roll.
I truly appreciate your videos and all that you do. I met you many years back at a prepping conference in Louisville, i believe. You were very polite and nice. I believe you signed your book for me. Anyway, you were one of the original reasons i started watching youtube, and I've learned so much from you over the years. I've also bought many of your products, and i can't think of one that isn't of high quality and well made. I wish i could get to one of your classes. Years ago, i was trying some of your suggestions, and i thought it was well thought out for the time. I thought most of the gear seemed too heavy to carry, but i understood your reasoning. Then you evolved into lighter gear, and at first, i was a little taken back for a few reasons, but i saw how you were just trying to always improve on different options. Anyways, im rambling. Just thought you should know the some of us appreciate you and have been watching since the beginning, through everything, and you continue to come across as someone who is not only knowledgeable but is always eager to keep learning, and as soneone who has integrity and honesty. Not all youtube channels I've followed for the last 12-15 years can say that. Many of them have abandoned what drew me to the channel for nothing more than clicks, self-promotion, or pure salesmanship, to silly tricks and gimmicks, to being outright antagonistic just for the interaction that drives viewers. I just thought you should hear from a stranger about what a good man you seem to be.
Citizen is my watch of choice. I am on my 3rd in 30 yrs, and the first one was a diving watch that never went bad. I t was just so beat up looking I bought a new fresh one. The replacement one had replaceable batteries and no solar charging. It eventually bought the farm after like 15 yrs. The latest has the solar charge built in to the display and I expect this might be the one I die with. I always pick simple design, black face, large white numbers, analogue. Can't stand a watch I have to squint at to tell the time. I need big numbers at every hour, not tick marks.
EDS is more accurate in how I operate. I have my core pocket knife, pen, fieldnotes notebook, Olight Arkfeld and bic lighter. Yet, I also have on standby a few more items that I might put in my pockets or haversack if I foresee the possibility of needing it. I carry the updated Arkfeld because it also includes a black light. I use that to find lost things to charging the lume on my Seiko field watch. The black light allows me to see in the dark without giving away my position as much.
Picked up a tactical Bible cover for an EDC on Amazon. Love it. Full size Bible, flashlight, batteries, lockblade, Swiss army, pens, pencils, notepads, lighter, phone cords, charger, survival bracelet, band-aids, aspirin, multi-tool, usb, comb, spare cash and harmonica.

This was a good video. Keep it simple and carry multipurpose items that you actually use. I agree.
If you can get by without the scissors, a SAK Forester is about half the price of the Outrider shown here. I paid about $40 on Amazon for a black Forester. If y'all are looking for a kinda similar button up to what Dave is wearing, I recommend the ones at Academy Sports. I have had a few "fishing" shirts from them that have the vent in the back and similar pockets that have held up well over the past few years. Not all of them are earth tones but the ones I picked out are. The biggest difference is no zipper for the sleeves gotta go short or roll em up. And those Darn Tough socks have a good warranty that I never heard of anyone using. So even though they cost me a lot for the ones I have I figured they will be worth it. So far they have lived up to their name. That cap is a cool setup and if I get one I might have to take the fresnel lens out of my wallet and put it in there. Dave is definitely a good source for ideas, and the clipper compass on the back is one I will have to use for myself.

I have a similar system of the core items in my pockets. In my wallet I have two EDS items. 2 or 3 floss picks. These are MUCH more useful than a SAK toothpick for dislodging something that is stuck in your teeth. 2 to 3 "H" bandaids. Over time, these have been the most useful for everyday scrapes and cuts.

My eds is a watch pocket knife ( small three blade ).. hip knife OR good folder always a belt.. (skinny guy) ..( location in mind)..
And 6 to 8 ft of 3/ 16"or 1/4"braided cordage ( piece of rope) BIC Lighter
And a couple needles in my wallet with upholstery thread ( strong as hell).. wrapped around a piece of box board.. and a little pencil..( I'm a carpenter).. bug out / get home bag loaded in my truck.. ( which has a bow tie on it and everyone before it... ( we like what we like) .... My 2 cents worth..

Nothing beats darn tough socks
One additional piece of my everyday carry/system that I carry is my wallet which is a must have anyway but I have been able to add to it and keep extra items in it is my wallet. I use a hard sided wallet called the flipside 4 which I am able to carry in my front pocket and it’s very light weight but I am able to carry more than just cash and cards with me that helps since I have to have it with me all the time anyway.
EDS is fine. I change if I am wearing cargo shorts, cargo pants or lined cargo pants throughout the year... and from t-shirt, to cardigan to hoodie with or without jacket for many of the same reasons. I even have a winter hat and a different hat for the rest of the year. As far as what I keep on my person, I'm surprised that I keep 'more'. I wear irish setter boots, with a boot knife and two small reflective pouches for carrying whatever I might need to add. The laces are replaced with extra long hanks of Titan SurvivorCord with handcuff keys. Thick wool socks, good for both summer and winter needs, folded over and over for summer, pulled knee high for winter if required. Cargo pants or shorts, either way enough places to store things. Top left pocket has an Aurora A3 650 Lumen rechargeable flashlight, right pocket will have paracord bracelet lanyard with a keychain multitool and a Gerber Dime, it has a built in striker for a ferro rod. Cargo pockets will include a multi-color pen, right-in-rain notepad, wallet, phone, larger black energizer TAC-300 flashlight, larger pocket knife. On the belt will be a length of SurvivorCord with a ferro rod toggle along with a larger multi-tool. The belt itself is a cargo device and hides a signal mirror,1 liter plastic bags, water purification tablets, pouch of sanitizer, matches, strikers, fishing line, sinkers, hooks, fake bait, band-aids, alcohol swabs, triple-antibiotic ointment, simple flat metal saw blade, razor, emergency whistle, needle, thread, paper money, some change and a couple of painkillers. I replaced all the drawstrings in my (winter) hoodies with extra long hanks of SurvivorCord that I braid to make the right length and have ferro toggles on most of them. I do use a digital watch (not a smart watch though) which also has altimeter (pressure based), compass, RF time setting and it charges via solar. I have had the watch for many years and the rechargeable battery is still working great, does well charging from indoor lighting too. My hats do not do anything special. I do have one with pockets and one with a solar panel and built in headlamp, but I don't 'wear' those unless it's a special occasion where they are called for. I wear a flat cap and have made one of them, if I make another one then I will probably include a pocket or two into it, all that requires with this kind of hat is to put velcro somewhere since the inside is basically a large pocket anyway.
Then there is the tiny backpack or the large backpack, which I'm not even going to get into :)
I'm somewhat surprised how often some of these items come in handy when you actually have them on you all the time. The little Gerber Dime alone with it's knife, pliers, tooth pick, tweezers and bottle opener alone is quite handy!
I wear a billed hat everyday and it never occurred to me that it actually can serve a purpose of keeping the sun out of your eyes lol…

A good back up tourniquet is a roll of electrical tape. I definitely still have a CAT always since you do need a stick for the tape. Just lay said stick along the limb tape a bunch of wraps around both limb and stick. Twist tight and tape the stick in place write the time on the tape. Quite a few in a roll.
I truly appreciate your videos and all that you do. I met you many years back at a prepping conference in Louisville, i believe. You were very polite and nice. I believe you signed your book for me. Anyway, you were one of the original reasons i started watching youtube, and I've learned so much from you over the years. I've also bought many of your products, and i can't think of one that isn't of high quality and well made. I wish i could get to one of your classes. Years ago, i was trying some of your suggestions, and i thought it was well thought out for the time. I thought most of the gear seemed too heavy to carry, but i understood your reasoning. Then you evolved into lighter gear, and at first, i was a little taken back for a few reasons, but i saw how you were just trying to always improve on different options. Anyways, im rambling. Just thought you should know the some of us appreciate you and have been watching since the beginning, through everything, and you continue to come across as someone who is not only knowledgeable but is always eager to keep learning, and as soneone who has integrity and honesty. Not all youtube channels I've followed for the last 12-15 years can say that. Many of them have abandoned what drew me to the channel for nothing more than clicks, self-promotion, or pure salesmanship, to silly tricks and gimmicks, to being outright antagonistic just for the interaction that drives viewers. I just thought you should hear from a stranger about what a good man you seem to be.

Citizen is my watch of choice. I am on my 3rd in 30 yrs, and the first one was a diving watch that never went bad. I t was just so beat up looking I bought a new fresh one. The replacement one had replaceable batteries and no solar charging. It eventually bought the farm after like 15 yrs. The latest has the solar charge built in to the display and I expect this might be the one I die with. I always pick simple design, black face, large white numbers, analogue. Can't stand a watch I have to squint at to tell the time. I need big numbers at every hour, not tick marks.
EDS is more accurate in how I operate. I have my core pocket knife, pen, fieldnotes notebook, Olight Arkfeld and bic lighter. Yet, I also have on standby a few more items that I might put in my pockets or haversack if I foresee the possibility of needing it.
I carry the updated Arkfeld because it also includes a black light. I use that to find lost things to charging the lume on my Seiko field watch. The black light allows me to see in the dark without giving away my position as much.
Picked up a tactical Bible cover for an EDC on Amazon. Love it.
Full size Bible, flashlight, batteries, lockblade, Swiss army, pens, pencils, notepads, lighter, phone cords, charger, survival bracelet, band-aids, aspirin, multi-tool, usb, comb, spare cash and harmonica.

Darn toughs for everyday but I use Injinji socks for hiking or walking more than 8 miles. Never gotten a blister with them.
