Hats of to these guys nothing but the utmost respect. That is a hard days work with 0 protection and safety gear
What are you talking about, that 2 guy had a rag over his face to protect himself from the heat 😅. Def mad respect for these guys.
yeah the 3M safety squint
Oh, so you didn't see the protective screen he had for welding? The tongs he used to place the metal? The gloves he used with said tongs? Not very observant, are you, bro?
@alexgrenlie862 if you call that protective equipment, then God help you... and tongs ? What do you want him to do pick molten metal up with his bare hands ? Not very clever, are you bro 🤣🤣
Truth. My dad would lose his shit when I would show up in swimming trunks 🩳 and slides 🩴 to weld up some security doors at our shop.
They go to all that trouble to make a beautiful knife and they weld the tang on ?!??!
That blew it for me
Exactly!
I was totally pissed 😡 with that! Wtf are they thinking 🤔 out on the woods forest jungle that handle will give in
Another Channel explained: The government banned real weapons so by law they have to make it breakable.
Was just thinking exactly that
Im working offshore on a oil rig here is health and safety is everything.....its crazy to see people have to work in this condition and makeing such a nice product 👌 stay safe
These condition very easy we found it in development country, how they dont care about health safety.
Its because worst case scenarios are beaten in to you constantly. These guys have been doing this their whole lives and perfect it. They don't need safety gear because they use situational awareness and use their brains

He does impressive work I agree!
The guy on the power hammer has some skills. Those are very difficult to use, never mind that fast and accurate.
I was about to say the same damn thing
I'm not a blacksmith, and I know NOTHING about forging.....but I can tell: That 3-section fold technique on the press, was beautiful.
Do it a few thousand times and you get pretty good at anything.
@@Biomass1 Not many people dedicate years of their life to honing skills anymore. High skill labor is in super high demand right now in every part of industry. Even CNC operators are getting hard to find.

Very weak tang. Also, loving all the loose clothing around the grinding wheels. 👍🏻 Aside from that, the dude on the power hammer has some crazy skills.
They wouldn't get as many knives from each billet doing it another way, but I bet they could make killer full or hidden tang ones from one piece.
For some reason, full tang is not common where I am from (India). I'm not sure if it is to save steel or about the balance of the knife.
Well if you feel that way about it.................Don't buy one
@@josephaugustine4876 its for those blades that are mainly used for showpiece.
Blades that are used for real work have full tang.
Nothing beats a super sharp knife when you're in the field and need it and the rat tail handle snap off... was on board until I saw that...
I knew it was going to be like at the plasma cutter stage.
Lol why would it snap off anymore then if it was part of it originally ? A tang that thin woulda broke even if it wasn’t part of the original blade …
Gotta love the guy grinding the blade edges with no eye protection. As old school as it gets.
the trick is that you close your most favorite eye, and squint with your least favorite eye
@@wcsd9577 LOL Good one!
the arc welding helmet was nice also!!!
Also the guy grinding the green handle with no breathing protection. I don’t want to know what his lungs are filled with…
Even worse than that, no lung protection.
In this day n age! No goggles no shield open sandals, loose clothing gloves hearing plugs etc. Just insane
Let's call it what it is. A temporarily sharp'ish knife made from scrap mild steel.
How can you say that it is not a high carbon steel?
@@akhtarkh The grinding sparks at 10:55. Also they welded the tang without tempering it afterwards. High carbon will crack at the weld in no time.
It is also going to rust since we can see it is clearly not stainless.
@@rbhe357😂😂😂😂 well said...just like how things went silent 😂😂😂
Complaining that Damascus (or if you prefer Pattern welded Steel) contains some low carbon material is like complaining that they made vodka but there's alcohol in it. Yes, cheap stainless steel won't rust but you should just throw most of that away from square one. Damascus steel is meant to be owned by competent people, wise enough to take care of it.
@@badgerrrlattin35 What? Just because someone folds two types of metal together doesn't make it Damascus steel. It makes it another cheap imitation that people who don't know better fall for. Not being stainless isn't the real point. If I baked you a cake, but used the scraps and stuff I found on the floor, would you eat it? I mean it IS still a cake, right?
There's only one critique that I would make is that they should clean up the steel before they welded it together
It just looks like rando scrap steel
I did not notice any flux either.
Its not necessary as they are only good for decorations...its cheap crap from Pakistan 😅
Any addresses on why to contact them?
@@kandaboy3026 you mean WHERE ,or WHY ? This cheap shit is sold by Ebay, for 20 or 30 dollars, but still not worth the money

Such a nice and well made blade... FOR AN AWFUL TANG😢
What I like best is all the safety precautions taken…
No full tang = no durability. Easy design fix that would make the knife 100x stronger.
Really?! All the heat stressing, the full blade heat "treated" poorly, the serrated edge right before final grind, piss poor heat control while hammering and the tang is ehat kills the durability?!
Good 😊😊
@@johnpike9612 I don't know much about blade smithing. The part that got me the most disappointed was how he put the edge on with all that heat, and also the tang. I thought all other Things were going to be fixed with a heat treatment before grindimg the edge, probably because I don't know enough.
Looks good to me. Doing the serrations by hand with grinding wheels was pretty impressive. Hope those guys are able to scrape out a living with those.
It´s a shitty knife. The welded rat tail tang will break after a few good smacks on a trunk. The blade looked good, but lacked structural integrity. Wouldn´t pay more than 10 bucks for it.
@Biden_is_demented I don't know man, seeing 10 guys in a crap-hole country working to make that, I throw a bone. I'm not Mr Bushcrafter, building a stick hut
@@homevalueglass3809 I´m not dissing their skill or ingenuity, but rather their design choice. Rat tail tangs are weak, and a welded one even more. They could have left some metal to work with, but chose to cut it close to the blade. They did it to save man-hours in the handle work. Had they went with a full tang, or even a hidden tang, the knife would be robust. As it is, it´s just a tourist trap. If you try to chop down a tree with that, you will end with just the handle in your hand, while the rest of the knife goes flying.
The first time you hit anything with that knife it’s coming apart.
Why?
@@rahahope9056rat tail tang that was welded on....MAJOR weak spot....these knives are made in Pakistan trash
@@rahahope9056The welded tang. Very weak for a knife that size. Hit something too hard and that's where it breaks. If you want to chop or baton wood, go with a non welded full tang.
@@Biomass1 thanks a lot for your answer it was so wise and understanding 🙏🙏
Not only that they didn’t clean the pieces before welding them.
I can't get rid of the feeling that we see here are very skilled people ruining their health making decorative wallhangers for uninformed buyers.
the welder's vice has a fantastic amount of weld starts ! Almost a piece of industrial art!
Very entertaining to watch. I love watching how these were made. That being said... these knives are basically cool looking junk. Unknown steel, sketchy heat treat, so/so assembly. I love their industrious attitude but these are for display not for use. My guess is they are mostly mild steel. These things most likely will rockwell out at mid 40's, will hold an edge for 1 use. Im sure you can buybthem cheap and they do look cool but not a serious knife. Ill watch these videos all day long though. Id also like to add that if they made a few changes and had so real materials i think they could make a real decent knife, they obviuosly have some skills. Of course they woukd have to raise the cost of their product.
8:50 is the quench, and it's done all wrong. At no point in this whole process has the steel been anywhere above 50 HRC.
To much work and efford, for do so crapy Heat Treatments and so thin rattail

Nah. First world problems.

I can tell you right now, that handle is going to snap off the minute you start chopping anything solid.
naw, it will bend, not tempered, low carbon steel
Impressive skills but i saw a few issues. No flux used before hammering the steel together (unless you don't need it in a coal oven), when quenching, they dipped 2 blades pressed together in the oil and took a while doing it. You should quench as fast as possible and one blade at a time to get the best results. Also the tang looks way too weak for such a long knife. Needs to be full tang,,not something held by a few welds and a glued on butt cap.
the furnace was fired with coke - clean burning and adds plenty of carbon to harden the steel.
no flux needed when hammer welding.
on my hearth I have a piece of wrought iron laminated back in the 1800s.
the iron has rusted but the scale between the layers is as solid as ever.
Samurai sword makers work the same way.
@@rosewhite--- I guess everyone else are just fools to use flux when they make their forged or pattern welded steel with hammer or press. It does absolutely nothing and is just a waste of time and money.
What about the other complaints like quenching 2 blades side by side and taking awhile to quench? Or the extremely short tang for such a big knife?
Amazing, that all workers have 10 fingers! Without safety, in such rough conditions and yet they look quite ok.
safety is for sissies! way overrated, for whiners mainly!

You can see the inconsistency of the sharpened edge when the light hits it. Simply grinding it leaves a lot to be desired.

Wow! These guys are good. Absolutely beautiful working knives. I knew much of what and why with the metallurgy. But the bending and twisting was fascinating to see. I appreciate the previous comments about that. Great video. Thank you.
Those knives are terrible. The welded tang is way too thin for any kind of practical use, especially for a knife of such size. I have one and it broke in a matter of minutes of real use.
Shame, becuase with a slightly more expensive tang welded, let alone a smaller full tang knife, it would be much better.
My only thing is the way heat treated wasn't optimal
So. They LOOK good. But I don't think that it resembles Cold Steel Bushman in terms of quality. And what absolute cleanliness and order! What safety measures and working conditions! It is immediately clear that these are not Germans.
@@Julzapo they are not Germans that is quite clear they are in India even no the process isn't the cleanest or have alot of order the knife are very sharp and ca hold a decent edge!!!
It amazes me how each country does there own version of blacksmithing. Same principles are used. But in there own way. Thank you for sharing
Love the cardboard spark protector at 12:00
It's wonderful to see craftsman at work. I do agree with one of the comments I saw concerning the rat tail ting. It seems like the only potential week spot of this knife. Seems like it would be easy to make a full tang and then this knife would be bulletproof.
Not unil JoeX get to it!
It is not the only weak spot of the knife, the tampering process is not consistent to put it mildly, the final sharpening is performed with too fast grinder destroying the hardening process of the blade and the rat tail tang is just pathetic.
Weird since hammering of the blade is really well done, the blade is being destroyed in the further steps.
You would not want to take this knife to the wilderness, it would not last a day.
"Hunting knife" WOW, now can we see it hunt!
"Hunters Knife" is the correct term^^
I sure wouldn't do any heavy duty chopping with this knife. The Tang is smaller diameter than a pencil, plus it's welded. Yes, a couple of these guys have great skills, but bottom line, I wouldn't give $10 for a knife like this. It even has the signature "Frostwood" handle, which screams "EL CHEAPO".

I'd give it 10 minutes of survival use before it's delaminated and in pieces!
A lot of knife makers don't realize heating their stock in coal how much carbon it adds to the steel

Think the guy on the hammer does
Because you have eyelids….. don’t they work for you?
That will be a very low quality blade. None of the materials were cleaned before welding so there is definitely going to be bonding issues. They plasma cut out the shape instead of forging it to shape because it cannot be forged except for in one direction or it will delaminate. A welded on tang is not a good idea for a large hunting knife.
correct me if i am wrong, but the knifes did not look hot enough for a proper queench(no red color, i.e. still magnetic), no tempering. Maybe its ok with the steel they use, but it i don`t think so. the knife won`t hold a sharp edge long and chip etc
You are not wrong. You need no correcting. It would be okay to quench under critical if You weren't worried about edge holding and toughness. They probably skipped tempering because they know it's low enough in carbon to not build up any residual stresses and also, it's not like they're taking it from 65 HRC down to the 50's. There is no way that steel can harden to real knife levels. Otherwise, that tang would crack immediately upon welding.
Where are these available for purchase ?
I love the guy wearing safety goggles...on the top of his head. Im sure OSHA approved all this.

The method of making Damascus iron is wonderful
Wondered how the current Pakistani Damascus was made. I got a small belt knife made of this steel. Use it as my Black Powder patch knife. Love the way it cuts cloth. Very interesting stuff; hi-carbon married with low carbon. Obviously it wears unevenly leaving a permanent jagged edge. In many ways it's like "black Iron", but in some ways superior.
Really? Most of this stuff comes out TERRIBLE. I've never heard of anyone saying anything good about cheap Pakistani steel.
