Been using a 1920 open comb gillette with a feather blade on my head and 1966 gillette flare tip with a persona blade onmy face. Been a perfect shabe for each
Thanks for the comparison. That Wishi razor is a very popular rebrand, I've seen lots of companies selling it under their name. I own a super speed from my birth year and prefer it as well. The wishi is a good starter razor though.
Hi Matt- Great shave and razors showdown; thank you! I have the lemon scent in shave soap and aftershave and both are just great. I hope you are having a great week and all the best!
Very cool. I do enjoy the direction Razor Emporium is taking on picking up a number of “old-school” shave product lines. Talk about walking the walk! Thanks, Matt!
Congrats Jay Silver - you're the winner of the Weekly T-Shirt give-away! Please contact us at help@razoremporium.com with your address and size and we will get it shipped out right away! Thanks everyone! Stay tuned next week for another giveaway! - Razor Emporium Team
Absolutely love the look of those myrsol products and I only ever see great praise from them. That Rockwell razor on the other hand, Sheesh. Not really my thing and I think calling it a rookie is already off to a bad start as I think beginner shavers don't want to feel like they are a rookie. Plus being a Chinese made variant over the 6c and model T, I think it taints their image a little. awesome video though Matt. Video and sound quality are top notch as always.
The Rockwell R1 'Rookie' razor appears to be a re-branded Baili BR179. Viking's Blades' 'The Chieftain' looks very similar (if not identical, but with perhaps a better finish). The Weishi 9306C is similar, but has a differently knurled handle. Forvo is a great place to get pronunciations of foreign words, like 'Meer-sol' -- forvo.com/word/myrsol/#es
Nice comparison Matt, I started out with the Rockwell but felt it was too mild and constantly cut myself with it. I purchased a more aggressive razor and have better shaves without cuts or irritation.
Great shoot out, Matt. Keep the showdown and archive videos coming, I look forward to watching them. Matt, I have a question: I have a Gillette 1921 NEW Improved razor that has two corner teeth bent slightly inward. Can the bent teeth be straightened??? Love Razor Emporium products and especially services. Thanks. Have a great and safe week.
Great shave Matt. Can’t go wrong with a Super Speed. A little mild for my personal use, but a great shaver non the less and with a Gillette 7 o’clock Platinum, you can get a fantastic DFS from it 👍🏻💈
Great comparison shave Matt💈💈 The Rockwell certainly has that Chinese look about it, glad it worked out for you. Myrsol (Meer-sol)!? IDK What I do know is this, it works perfectly, performance is stellar and the post shave feel last for hours IMO👍 Scent is light and pleasurable and not over powering which is nice. Another super video and review as always. Enjoy!
Bill My first item in Traditional WetShaving was the Classic samurai Shavette . Then I got interested in Safety Razors and bought the Muhle R-41 . My only modern Razor to date. I have about 14 vintage Gillette 3 of them are Schick Kronas and I have 1 Gem Micromatic
Yep - you can't beat the Super Speed. I've got a 1947, a 1952 (my Birth Year) and have another undated coming in the mail. I also have a WeiShei & it looks like a really close copy to the Super Speed design. It shaves really well, but ... it's not vintage nickled BRASS construction ...
I recognize the Rookie. A few months ago, Rockwell had a promo deal when they first unveiled it. Only ten dollars. I was pleasantly surprised. Gave a decent shave. I worry about its durability, though. Of course, I'm comparing it to 1970 super speed so it's an unfair comparison.
Some already commented on the pronounciation. The meer (with ee as in seen) and then the o is really like in doh, or jock. Not like an ah. I could always ask my Spanish colleague to be sure :)
Steven here in Turkey again, but without the T-shirt! 😁 The soap must be new since I have only ever seen the scents and prep bottles. I'm about to go have a look at the Official Myrsol website again and sincerely hope that for a product with history behind it, they've brought what was(and may still be) a very disappointing site up to date and no longer looking so basic and 70's!
I am afraid I will have disagree with you regarding the mildness of the Micro Touch One. I have a 1940s Style Super Speed and have done my own side by side comparison with a MT1 and they felt exactly the same to me or as you said in the video "shades of gray" given how similarly they shave. But, of course, all this stuff is subjective so live and let live. ;-)
I also have both. I started with the MT1 when I seen that Rick guy from PawnStars endorsing it. The blade feel is strange on the MT1 almost like it’s straight out and not clamped down so it puts a slight bend in it for comfort like the SS is. It makes it an uncomfortable shave IMO due to blade feel. I just picked up a 1940’s Superspeed notched and that is so smooth and much more efficient. The MT1 actually had a decent blade exposure from what I remember but to get good shaves I needed a sharper blade like a GSB or feather. I will say I’ve gotten a BBS from both it’s just the blade feel is so much on the SS than on the MT1. The SS is so much better and I paid $20 for each razor. The TTO is so much smoother in the SS
Maybe it is a great razor, Weishi makes some good products from what I hear, but just this culture of rebranding stuff and marking it up just feels almost dishonest in my opinion. When I saw the R1 at the time I was starting, I was an inch from buying it until I realized "You are just selling me a Weishi with your name on it and a higher price tag." Kind of degraded by view on Rockwell a bit, and I know they make good razors like the 2C, 6C, and Model T, but still.
Super Speed every time. The Weishi provides a good, mild shave but the Super Speed is a tad smoother, arguably the smoothest shaving razor ever made. Sorry Rockwell, and Weishi, but that's what happens when you are pitted against an all-time great.
FWIW, I'd say --Meer-Sahl--. The first time I saw a Weishi, my reaction was that Weishi had knocked off the Flair Tip Super Speed from the '50s, rather than any of the other Super Speeds, or other razor. My experience with my Weishi ($10 shipped from the manufacturer) is that it balances well with a sharper blade. (And, FWIW, I heard third hand on another TH-cam video that Weishi is pronounced natively --Way-She--.) Also, if it turns out that my pronunciation of Myrsal is right, can I have a t-shirt? Thanks again for the videos.
I know Myrsol offer larger quantities of aftershaves in plastic bottles, but it would be a very sad day if that iconic glass bottle was discontinued. In an interview, Myrsol founder, the late Don Miquel Ricou Solé, said that he personally designed the bottle in the 1940s, in part to allow barbers to hold the edges (to help preserve the label from staining), plus allowing a firm grip and a distinctive, beautiful design, unlike other brands. His original glass supplier had to close their company and Don Solé was able to pick up the glass molds (before they were destroyed or discarded) and was able to get another Barcelona glass supplier to utilize them, thus keeping part of his brand image. I imagine Don Solé wouldn't be too happy if Myrsol had to discontinue the glass bottle. The interview ('INTERVIEW with Mr. Miquel Ricou Solé, founder of Myrsol'), was posted to several shaving forums in 2013 -- Foroafeitado, The Shaving Room UK, The Shave Nook, Badger & Blade and maybe others.
It looks like Myrsol has changed their iconic bottle to a simpler 180ml glass design (currently available at Gifts&Care in Spain). They might have already been offering slightly larger refills in 200ml plastic bottles. My previous comment was mistaken in saying their 1 litre bottles were plastic. They're glass. Sadly, it doesn't appear that Myrsol products are available in the US in 1 litre quantities.

I like my vintage razors so I'd do the Super Speed any day over a Chinese newmake.

Great showdown. I appreciate how you keep it consistent it the preshave to give a good opinion. Thanks for the intro to the new soap.
You’ve inspired me to switch to traditional shaving. I bought a de Edwin Jagger pink for my wife as a surprise gift 💝

Very nice. Would love to see a showdown with a single ring v. whatever you thought a modern equivalent might be.
good idea :)
I know I'm late but the Rockwell is the same as the baili bd179 and the Vikings blade Chieftain.
yesterday I received my razor you guys revamped,,,fantastic job,,,cant believe its the same razor I sent in,,,thanks for a great job
I bought a khaki falkand island set.! keep up this awesome work !
I agree with you, no matter how it is pronounced, Myrsol is a fine product line. Thanks, Zac

I entirely agree!

I also think you like the shorter handle of the Superspeed better!
Nice video, Matt. I'll have to try the Myrsol. I hadn't even heard of it before now. Thanks
Nice comparison Matt, I started out with the Rockwell but felt it was too mild and constantly cut myself with it. I purchased a more aggressive razor and have better shaves without cuts or irritation.
Nice Soap Line Matt The Classic Superspeed is Great 😀😎😊
Neat to see the new razors are matching the originals.
Not sure how you say it but it's on the bucket list of items to try.
Something like Meer Sol. I found Aqua Velva in Madrid but didn't saw Myrsol. Actually, I didn't look very hard. We were very busy roaming the city.
Great shoot out, Matt. Keep the showdown and archive videos coming, I look forward to watching them.
Matt, I have a question: I have a Gillette 1921 NEW Improved razor that has two corner teeth bent slightly inward. Can the bent teeth be straightened???

Have a great and safe week.
No. They are cast metal and snap off.

Weishe razors are EVERYWHERE! The Van der Hagen was my first try at wet shaving.

The Rockwell Rookie look very much like the Vikings Blade Chieftain razor….at least the handle does.
Matt, why not do a comparison to different travel razors? Thank You always for your videos.

exactly!
Hard to beat those vintage Gillette's.

That particular Gillette Super Speed razor was issued in 1949 .....Gillette sold this razor in 1949 with the red case.
Some already commented on the pronounciation. The meer (with ee as in seen) and then the o is really like in doh, or jock. Not like an ah. I could always ask my Spanish colleague to be sure :)
Is there any difference between the "Rookie" and the R1?
The packaging appears to name it the 'Rockwell R1 Rookie Series Double-Edge Safety Razor'.

What's with the bed head hairdo?
Looks like you had a great shave.
Does it available in India?
Nice T shirt.
this is from baili ,not weishi .. it also same as dorco and the one from razorrock ..,
Nice comparison
Odd, I thought the R1 was made in Canada
It's a rebranded weishi.
What happened to the King R Emporium shave soap?
Waiting on them to come back in stock from PAA

Matt, check out Michael Freedberg's videos for correct pronounciation of Myrsol, with the rolling R's and everything ;)
Thanks for video
Great review
I find that each era of the Super Speed shaves a little different from the previous generation.
Bali made it.. 👍

Great shave Matt.
I would think that it is pronounced as 'Mer-sol'.
There you go, gluffing your hair again.

Keep that bottle, they are going to change it for plastic one...
