Wow. I was on a LA class sub in the 90's. Cannot believe how techie the SCP has changed. Where is the helm and planes controls? Touch screens? The BCP is all on that one screen?

Hi, was it a newer so called 688i sub or one of the earlier ones? Could you elaborate on the acronyms. Cheers form Poland!

if you want to interview the crew you should do with the off work shift crews , or use shot question to on duty one

There is no sound until about 42 seconds into the video.

I've heard that people on board the Sub's get the best food in the Navy?

I completely understand, if you are away from home for months on end and in an enclosed box 500 feet down you deserve the best food available.

Do they really need so many monitors? Why not have augmented reality visors and use gesture controls via cameras in the visors. Guess the monitors just show how obsolete technology becomes by the time they are developed into a working product.

John Wang augmented reality visors? its not a video game man

jon g But space is tight and there is a need for a lot of displays plus it's not like you can go onto the bridge for a strategic view of the area around you. You're simply showing how limited you are by comparing the idea to a video game. Besides, one of the largest investor in augmented reality displays has been the US military for the display of manuals while technicians are at work.

yes i know the us military investes in that its a common fact.. its just not practical in a sub. i guess being realistic is being limited in your eyes. the monitors arent big or thick its like a flat screen tv so you are REALLY overblowing the problem.. they dont need to go on the bridge to "see" that is what SONAR is for and the other methods they use to hear whats around them. i dont think you have any idea at all how subs work. please refrain from speaking on what you dont know.

jon g What's not practical on a sub are excess equipment which block access to the hull should repairs be needed to stop flooding. Considering the needs of a submarine, visors would be practical so long as sufficient resolution are available. Besides, aren't a periscope a visor of sorts. I'll bet that my engineering degree gives me a fair idea of how sub's work, perhaps it is you that doesn't know what you are talking about. Note that the US army has stated that it is resolution that is holding back their use of visors but a sub isn't looking for small targets hiding in the bush so their resolution criteria should be lower. Visors are also easily replaced and are already used by the military to access repair manuals, the multiple uses would be a big advantage within the confines of a sub. I would chalk up the use of monitors to the fact that it takes decades for technology to be deployed in the design of a sub.

jon g Perhaps you should look into sonar a bit more. The waterfall displays are not really "seeing". Also look into how charts and plots were used by sub's during battle to help them visualize the situation. Of course, one of the purposes of the UK sub commander courses are to develop the skill of maintaining such visualization mentally by the commander. 3d visors would help present the must likely tactical situation as per computer estimates in a manner similar to a view through a periscope or from a bridge which is why they have a bridge in the sail. The sub's of various European countries are shown to have 2d representations of the tactical situation estimated on monitors, replicating the plots and charts of the two world wars. I always found the glass dry erase chart shown in the various "Journey to the Bottom of the Sea" films interesting as it shows they were trying to represent the visualization methods which were at use at the time.
