- Welcome to this North Carolina Now special on the USS North Carolina Submarine. In this special you will see what the 21st Century Nuclear Attack Submarine can do during Sea Trials. Then you will meet some of the North Carolina's namesake sailors serving abord the SSN-777. Then we dock here in Wilmington for the final step in preparing to serve our country, Commissioning. So, lets climb aboard and see the USS North Carolina.

As an American these men fill my heart with pride. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and that of your families.
I am a cold war veteran submariner, last of the Polaris Missile Tech's off the Robert E. Lee SSBN 601. My Father was Pharmacist Mate /Corpsmen on the BB-55 during most of the war and landed with the Marines on at least one occasion. His father, my Grandfather was a Ships Carpenter USN 1917.
I am the 3rd generation, L. Badkin to serve our great country in the United States Navy spanning over a 100 years of family support to the nations freedom, amen. Thanks Shipmates!

My dad was from North Carolina. I remember going aboard the battleship North Carolina when I was a kid. I later joined the Navy and served aboard a Sturgeon class fast attack submarine. Now a generation later, SSN-777 carries on the highest traditions of the Navy and service to our country.

Very fitting to have the USS North Carolina named sub when the area off the coast is called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. #s very 2000-5000 sunk ships and the USS North Carolina battleship “Showboat” is a beautiful sight. My grandfather lived close to Wilmington at the coast and he was a ww2 vet. He first took me to the battleship in the early 80s. And I’ve been going since
I particularly liked where a small piece of the old USS North Carolina was 'donated' to the new vessel to continue the service of those veterans into a new era. From what I can make out it was a few deck-boards but what significance! Those deck-boards resounded to sailor's boots during WW2 and now resound to the next generation's boots. I also like the primary order, "Man our ship and bring her to life". I'm a Brit and know little of US maritime traditions but those words seem very poignant and appropriate. Good luck to 777 and all who sail in her.

I served on USS Dolphin, AGSS 555 and after looking at this video I can only say that this boat is a beautiful piece of engineering.
willl 88 there may have been but not this one this one was for research and DEEP diving had window(s) museum in San Diego now
I did a bit of work on the Triple Nickel at Mare Island. She is truly one of a kind. If that boat could talk.......

I was the senior medical officer for COMSUBDEVGRU-1 during 1992-1995 and supervised the medical department for USS DOLPHIN as well as all other CSDG-1 assets. During my career in the submarine force, rode a lot of SSNs and SSBNs as medical oversight. Retired just after the USS VIRGINIA class were launched. Good documentary!

It is a shame Hugh Morton Sr. is not still alive to enjoy this event as he was responsible for getting the USS North Carolina Battleship in its place in Wilmington in 1960 as well as the Azelea Festival. RIP as well as all those sailors who have served on the past three North Carolina named ships.

What a technological difference between my "boat" USS Lafayette SSBN 616 and this sub. I wish I were younger, I'd reup for a tour of duty on this baby.

YES I FUN AROUND too I modified the TV commercial for the Marines..the few the proud, the Marines. TO the few the proud, the Crazy. Which Marines that I have said that too TOTALLY AGREE. Yes I'm a proud airhead.

WHEN i went in i wanted a job that i can TAKE WITH ME to the OUTSIDE(CIVILIAN WORLD). alot of Army jobs you cant do that BUT THE USAF AND NAVY U CAN. besides those 2 services the COAST GUARD which is now a USA MILITARY SERVICE may be a possibility. military training is like a GOLD TICKET a WILLY WONKA. they LOVE TO SEE that ,better odds on getting hired too. Beautiful presentation.
Angles and dangles are primarily for making sure everything is stowed for sea. As was observed in this video, the mess decks are where things usually go flying.

We called him "Caligula-han".... Dark times with that guy
Over the 3 years of his command...literally 90% of the crew left the Navy when their enlistment was up...the other 10% transferred to a new command.
2 officers had to leave for mental stress....
What a serious waste of great talent...I worked with some of the most excellent professionals in my life.... And we all left...ughh!
It's good to see the Admirals are doing a way better job on selecting COs for the Silent Service...

I like the number, a lucky ship coming from my favorite east coast state!
I don’t think I’d want to be stuck on a submarine however compared to the old subs in WW2 these modern machines are complete luxury with all the onboard facilities. Plus submariners are a different breed to their Navy counterparts. It definitely takes a special kind of individual to work on these amazing ships.

I served aboard two US Navy Knox Class Frigates during the Cold War as a Sonar Technician. These surface vessels were designed to detect and track Soviet submarines (Anti-Submarine Warfare) that may threaten the Fleet or mainland cities in the US and those of it's allies. Modern US subs have always been much stealthier (and harder to detect) than the Russian subs. We 'accidentally' found a contact with our towed array sonar (TASS) on an exercise in the Atlantic. The C.O. and Weapons Division Officer looked at the data, then confiscated our recorded frequency chart. We were told not to discuss the 'incident', and that we never heard or saw anything. I believe we may have detected one of our own. To this day, I know that one of the most dangerous jobs in the Navy is being on the crew of a submarine. They deserve our respect and gratitude. To all Sailors out there who died performing their duties, Fair Winds and Following Seas.

I always wanted to do this when I was a kid
I was shocked to hear it said that this boat was as quiet at flank speed as we used to be a 5 knots. At five knots a 688 is practically a hole in the water. If they are that quiet, I pity anyone who ever tries to take them on. Just the advantage of being able to maneuver at speed to get into good firing position is huge. I'll bet they are rewriting the book on tactical maneuvering with these.
That what I said when I heard that. Wow shucks to be them. So scary if the world only had a clue. They wouldn't be so mouthy.

Pretty awesome, just amazing how These massive technological know-hows and abilities of mankind can come and go without actually making use of it's full potentials, which must be devastating to our existence, just better to have them and never come to situations where it's full capabilities will be deployed. These are guarantors of peace.

Facts presented that are amazing. A non intrusive periscope that allows for the bridge to be located in a larger roomier combat center bridge. Vertically launched missiles are external to the pressurized hull where the crew resides. The Commanding officer holds the rank of captain which has more experience to in command.

I WAS ON A 588 CLASS AND WENT ON SEA TRIALS , 18 MONTH MAJOR OVERHAUL. WE TOOK ALL THE SHIPYARD FOREMAN WITH US, INCENTIVE TO ENSURE THAT THE WORK WAS DONE RIGHT. ON A SUB, EVERYONE TENDS TO DIE TOGETHER IF YOU HAVE A MAJOR CATASTROPHE. THE BOAT I WAS ON WAS NUCLEAR AND ONLY 246 FT LONG. MY FIRST RACK WAS NEXT TO A TORPEDO. MY SECOND RACK WAS SO NARROW I HAD TO CRAWL HALF WAY OUT TO TURN OVER. THEY GIVE YOU A YEAR TO EARN YOUR DOLPHINS.
588s were the old Skipjack class, weren't they? Pretty tight quarters in those compared to the 688s which we hardly spacious. Despite that, I would take a fast attack over a boomer any day. Despite my friends who served on the big Tridents bragging about how roomy they are, I would have been bored to death.

If the crews of current nuclear subs were to see the movie Das Boot they would realize they were serving on a cruise ship in comparison.
I often go tour the USS Silversides - a WW II Gato class submarine, and compare that to the Los Angeles class subs I knew in the 1980s and that difference is huge. I'm betting these are even nicer. If you are ever around Muskegon, Michigan a stop at the Silversides Museum is worth the time.
Whats that saying about only a diesel submarineer can tell you how nice a nuclear submarine is?
Most of us have seen it. It is the most realistic movie about life on a submarine. Now for the mental state of bubbleheads watch Down Periscope. You might think it is a comedy but I can say that the sense of humor (sick) is true.
As far as space, the early nuke subs were not much bigger than the diesel boats. We thought the Ohio class boats were floating Hiltons. They still are.
Now they have "pilots"? Wow. I stood many hours of watch as throttleman.

An executive officer who’s been on 2 previous submarines calls them ships? And the next sailor they interviewed, are us sailors not taught that they’re boats not ships, a very important fact for submariners from what I’ve heard
Technically speaking, subs ARE ships nowadays due to their size.
The first submarines were called boats because they were small enough to be hoisted aboard a larger vessel.
We still refer to them as boats today as an acknowledgement of heritage. (Tradition).
My dad served this same sub, told me the larger ones were ships. 🤷♂️

So today a submarine is a ship and a aircraft carrier is a boat. Things have chenged since I was in. 1985-89 USS Constellation CV-64
Carriers and battle wagons are still ships, and subs are still boats.
