I love this scene so much because it explains so much about Bree. With nothing left to clean, with nothing left to do, with nothing left to distract her she breaks down. It's a defining point in her character because Bree never deals with her feelings or situations. She just buries them under chores, and baking, and making her world perfect to not have to deal with her life falling apart.

The entire set up of this scene is an outline of Bree's personality and character. She keeps her emotions in check and is polite on the phone even after receiving the most dreadful news...Followed by her continuation of shining the silverware and then straightening the table cloth. Her breakdown is such an eruption of sorrow and the most imperfect thing that could happen in her 'perfect' kitchen. Amazing.

I remember Bree saying that she always cleaned silverware last because it reminded her of beautiful moments with Rex and for this reason, she said it was her favorite part when cleaning the house.
It is but so dramatically ironic that now that Rex passed away as she was cleaning silverware, it might now be the part she likes the less as it will now remember her of Rex's death.

When my twin brother died. everybody was falling apart around me. My parents lost it, my grand parents were a wreck, even uncles and aunts were in pieces, barely holding up. I was just 15 and i kept on living. I went back to school three days after his death, did my chores and his, helped my parents holding up and kept myself constantly busy and stuck to a strict routine in order to prevent myself from thinking about anything but what had to be done on a day to day, minute to minute basis. My parents were amazed at how i held up, and i didn't even feel like i was doing anything special myself. It was all very natural to me and the grief didn't seem to reach me. I remember being scared and angry of a life without him, but not sad.
Then 2 months later my neighbour killed my dog. Then again, not a tear shed and life went on.
6 months after that my neighbour was dead and the police concluded to a suicide. 2 months after his death i left the house, school, the country and the mourning finally begun.
It took ten years to get better, and i never told to a soul what i did during those ten years.

    • @TheIntelligentOne11
      @TheIntelligentOne11 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

yrandyc11 Actually, her "continuing in regiment" is not only because of her tidy and a bit opsesive character. If you watch the entire episode, there's a prologue to this, that puts this scene into a whole new perspective. In that scene, in Rex's hospital room, she and Rex reconcile, and actually portray the love and devotion they really have for one another. And during that, the silverware is mentioned in context that Bree ends her spring cleaning always with the polishing of that same silverware that they got as a wedding gift. And then, Bree explains that she does that because it reminds her of their wedding day, and of the aunt that gave her the silver as a gift with words - The best is yet to come... And as she polishes it, she reminisces and gets strength and certainty from those words. The scene ends with Rex getting scared that he might die because of the operation, and she consoled him with repeting those words to him... That makes this scene all the more tragic, and having that said in mind, it's not only because of her being who she is, it's also a coping mechanism, with which she tries to keep it together by convincing herself that the best is still yet to come.
I wish someone posted both scenes together, that would be even more effective. But this scene is absolutely perfect in every way. The camera angles, the expressions, the emotions, her acting, the music...simply breathtaking

There is a profound and thorough study of the stories in this tv show. One day, my mother watched with me this episode, and she asked to me: 'But why Bree continues to clean the silverware after the news about the death of her husband? She is very strange!'.
I told to my mother that Bree isnt't strange, but there is a story behind this fact. I said that in a previous episode, Bree said that when she cleans the silverware, she thinks about the family, about the sons and about the affections. That's why she continues to cleans after this terrible news.

This scene is so unbelievably powerful... Bree was always the one to keep her composure through everything, even after hearing the news about her husband. When she sees his empty chair it just finally sinks in and she completely let’s go. This has happened to me several times. When my husband passed, I would tear up every time I saw his empty side of the bed... then one day, I was doing laundry and I hadn’t washed his pillowcase since after he passed. As I took it off, i inhaled the scent and it smelled just like him. I collapsed to the bed and I was screaming into the mattress just as Marcia did in the scene... i don’t know why I continue to watch this scene... it hits so close to home but it reminds me so much of memories that I miss.

I cannot understand how Marcia Cross did not get Emmy Awards for her unparalleled performance in this incredible series. As a character, she evolved so much as a human being, reinventing herself from someone who started out as extremely obsessive-compulsive and controlling to a woman who was more free-spirited and vulnerable to others in her life. I just feel like Marcia's character of Bree, more than any of the other main characters in this series, showed the greatest acting ability in portraying a character who changed the most as a person throughout this series. I never get tired of seeing Marcia's brilliance on this show.

I felt so horrible for Bree during this moment, and knowing her background of why she's so meticulous about everything is just as tragic.

Seems just like yesterday. Great performance. She got into her character. There is no loss like that one of a loved one. "All is well, nothing's wrong". That breakdown was so real it hurts.

The storylines for Bree always struck me as particularly pointed... as if Cherry was trying to work through some issues with his own mother...

Niko and how come they didn't show that Orson's character never avowed remorse about Edie's death, especially when she was so nice to him. She was the only person who regularly visited him when he was in jail.

Ohhh Bree,,, ah man, tough scene to watch. Me and my dad watched Desperate Housewives till the end. It's our favorite show... Bree was a very complicated woman but always perfect. She finally breaks down and it's so sad to watch but it's 1 of my fav scenes... 😓

People wondered why she kept cleaning. Two reasons: (1) In a previous episode Rex tells her that he notices things she does around spring cleaning, including polishing the silver. She def looked a lil happy to find that Rex indeed notice what she does in taking care of things. (2) Bree ofcourse has a stone kind of OCD and she is a perfectionist. It also states that when she was 10 her bio mom was killed in a hit and run. She went to clean the blood from the street and felt better when it was done. In this case, she had nothing to do after the silver.....therefore she's left to grief and falls apart.

Reaction to such news is very individual from person to person.
I was really close with my grandma, doctors had trouble extubating her, getting her to breathe on her own after her heart surgery. She passed away in the hospital. When my mother received the call and told us, she herself became hysterical-started to cry immediately. I just felt numb. My mother and sister hugged and cried, I took my phone, spent good amount of time making sure the most important things are in order and then I went for a long walk along the sea. I didn't cry for several hours. It was very deep pain, something I felt for the first time in my life, but at first I think there was just disbelief mixed with anger and the feeling of it all being surreal. Marcia Cross did a great job in this scene.

It's totally amazing how great Marcia acts this scene. I mean the way she starts to do her favourite chore a lot faster when it's too painful to think about the marriage, when she just found out about Rex's death. Even though it's just a TV show, I felt so bad for Bree.

Perhaps, since there was a lot that we didn't see before the events in the show. It would be cool to see a series about younger Bree.
To me, Orson was her equal and it was terrible to see how their relationship ended.
