  • YOU MAY MEET THE BEST FRIENDS OF YOUR LIFE PLAYING FIGHTING GAMES!
Every year, James has a message he really wants to convey to the players out there, and it's something he would like to speak about at the end of Evo, but as he is no longer closing out Evo, he has been putting his messages here on TH-cam. Listen to what he has to say about the FGC, and how he feels the FGC can be a wonderful place for you to take part in.

You're a crucial part of evo. You're history. Many and many special evo moments are eternalized with your commentary in it. Thank you for that

Hearing bits of this actually made me a little sad to be honest cause growing up I had a group of like 5-7 dudes who I would game with online a lot, some of the funnest times I ever... Now as life has gone on we have more or less all gone our separate ways... The couple I still keep in touch with don't mess with fighting games and I am new to learning them myself, and while I enjoy it. I really only play by myself. And in this type of game it can be a bit of a bummer when there is no one to share with or talk with when you have a breakthrough in a fighting game, I definitely feel like something is missing even if I hadn't realized it before... Man I thought I was past being the introverted dude looking for people to play with lol. Hope you are good James.

Some of the closest people in my life are the ones I met through fighting games. Being completely honest, there's a couple of them I'd probably be dead today without.

In 1996 I met two lifelong friends as a result of shared love of fighting games. The games themselves were always enjoyable, but the friendships were the truly valuable thing I took away since being part of the fgc no longer appeals to me. I don't envy modern players trying to make connections since the games are so accessible now the social aspect can easily be overshadowed if a player is just there for the w/l.

I recently found out my city has casual locals, but they start at 11pm and they only play Tekken. I showed up twice and everyone there seemed so cool and chill. But that time schedule just doesn't work for me, especially for a game I don't play. Super jealous of ppl that have SF locals.

it really is a 'social game'. i was mostly a Gundam Versus player who always go to a specific 'LAN' to play with 3 others who i met online (netcode pls), but one thing lead to another.
that place we always hang out to play Gundam Versus was run by the one and only Xian. i wasnt even aware that he is the sleepy guy behind the cash register.
all of a sudden i made a lot of new friends who plays other fighting games and then some asked me to show up to SEA Major even if i wasn't playing anything competitively (back then it was SSF IV days) and then running into Daigo during the event.
i cant afford to travel to the states at the moment, but i will be going to EVO Singapore when it happens. i screamed when i saw the announcement and got scolded in the morning. hopefully i can finally meet you in person there.

For me it's so ture fighting games build relationship.
I had made my closest friends on a fighting game community. I would not come so far without their support on my worst days.
So I'm really happy to see fighting games get popular again. Gaming is a cuture which connects ppl together.

Didn't get to go to Evo but some of my school friends kidnapped me to hangout during Evo Weekend. Before I went back home we saw the Grand Finals of Granblue and the entire bracket of Strive on Championship Sunday, popping off at the new reveals and watching Strive was great.
Hoping I can get things together to come to an Evo(s) next year and the future.

Speaking of finding random friends at Evo, I'm pretty sure I played friendlies with Tatuma Saturday. I was wandering around the free play area looking for casuals and found this random Japanese guy in training mode on Sol. I saw a few guys watching him practice, and approached him after it was clear the guys standing behind were not interested in playing. He didn't speak a lick of English other than saying "safe jump" at one point when I whiffed a wakeup super, and proceeded to hand my ass to me 10-0, but he was an absolute gentleman and had the biggest smile on his face when I said "arigato gozaimasu" after our games. Imagine my surprise when I saw him walk up during top 6 the next day, where I went "hold on, I think I recognize that guy" D:

My 2nd Evo. This 2nd time attending I could now tell how special it is. My first time in 2023, i was so curious and lost at times lol. When it was over this year I was a bit sad and missed it. All these people that go are fighting game fans like me, passionate. In my daily life I don't meet people that love fighting games. They play it but are not passionate about it. It's amazing to meet at Evo like minded people that share the same interests. Growing up I loved fighting games, they were my main games. Played hours in the arcade in my hometown and when my parents went to Vegas. It use to be packed and played with many people. I didn't really meet any significant friends in those days that I can still meet today but it was a blast. I found out that there were a competitive scene back then with Tomo, Valle, Daigo, etc. but I never knew about it. It probably would have changed my life if I attended those competitions as a teenager. Even though I am older now. Im grateful I can meet amazing people at Evo and compete.

There are only 2 friends in my life that I got to sit down with and really take a crack at learning fighting games. For years I tried to find or build a group of players but there just isn't a scene where I live. Without that connection, I've finally decided it's time to focus on hobbies that I have an accessible community for.
I'm happy to see 3rd Strike, MvC2, and Garou get so much appreciation at this years evo. I can walk away fairly content, I guess. I hope the fgc has a long and happy future ahead, but I don't think I'll be engaging with it for the forseeable future.
Well... maybe if they ever make another Darkstalkers 😅, but it's just not healthy to hold onto things for too long. Life is short.

Ask Nintendo. It’s already known Nintendo vetoed Smash at Evo after being acquired by RTS and Sony.
