      I pretty much agree. The context does matter a lot. Sometimes you will need a certain tool to achieve a certain result, a certain look, or style.
      That being said you also have to have the skills to use the tool. So it’s a partnership. An artist and their tools work together to bring ideas and vision to life.

    It’s definitely both! I’m so glad this video went this way instead of, “camera gear doesn’t matter”. It bothers me so much when all these photo/video TH-cam’s say that and then show you the camera they are shooting with and it’s a camera worth more than some peoples homes. Here’s my RED Cinema Camera, but gear doesn’t matter, you can shoot just like I do! Yeah, okay. 😂

    I’ve always told people that you don’t need great equipment to take great photos…. but it absolutely helps. Some of my favorite photos I’ve taken have been with a cheap Canon film body and a kit 50mm, but those were far and few between when compared to the higher end cameras and lenses I’ve acquired since.

    Just a note on the bokeh differences: The Leica was able to achieve better separation from the background and more blurred background because it is a full frame camera, however you didn't take into consideration that you can change the lens on the Fujifilm where you could adopt a lens with with higher F-stop or you could just throw on a longer lens and create even more separation from the background. I agree that the gear matters, the Camera matters in some situations but the lens is the most important part of the kit. You will never get the same results with a kit zoom lens what you can get from eg. an f/1.2 prime. But the end of the day the image what matters and people are able to create stunning images with their phones or with a pinhole camera.

    I think you miss the point of the phrase, does a camera matter? Sure, but does a better camera tell a different story, Does it influence the story you want to tell as a photographer, and would some cameras wouldn’t be able to? I don’t think so, the camera doesn’t matter if your able to get your story/Image across to the public.
    The results might be different, but that doesn’t translate to a good or bad photo, just different. That doesn’t mean that gear doesn’t matter for your creative process, and this is what I agree on, some cameras help you create an image faster, easier or better. Size, image sensor and lenses come to play here, and allows you to tell the story the way you want. Just like writers can tell the same story, some might be more fun to read, but you end up with the same premises.
    To clarify, any camera, even a smartphone can tell a compelling story/ create a good image, if you know how to use them as a photographer.

    Absolutely love this discussion Evan, I'm pretty sure you hit it right on the head with in the first 2 minutes or so in regards to how everything was nuanced.
    And your hoodie test is definitely something that most people should start doing more of when it comes to how often they can take their here on the go. But at the end of the day there is a combination of those two things that is always going to be at play.
    I feel that most people are starting to you adopt that my said instead of just saying " you need to be good and if you're good your equipment doesn't matter"

    What I believe it means is, a photographer can get more out of less than a non-photographer can get with the best gear. Kai and Lok proved this time and time again with their pro photog cheap camera series back on the Digital Rev channel. This is because at the end of the day, we tell the camera what to take the picture of. No camera can compensate for our vision, creativity and all the sweat equity we put into learning this craft.

    Great video, Evan. This topic is extremely popular. I think it's a combination of both - but I put more emphasis on you, the photographer. Without the photographer's creativity the 'tool' is limited. With that, having the gear necessary to get the shot matters. Finding the tool that helps us capture our individual creativity is extremely important. Thanks mate - well done!

    Great job on this subject. It's a hard one to cover and not offend people. A couple of things I would add... A better camera often makes it easier to get the shot (think faster FPS, better in low light, better AF etc). Sure you may be able to get the same shot... but you might have to work it longer and find creative ways get the image. The second one is about enjoyment - sure... I can could get a better image with one camera, BUT if the process is much more enjoyable with a different camera and you find that it helps you get in a creative zone... then that camera becomes the better option. It is our limitations that inspire creativity - take that as you will.

  • @judeemclaughlin7394

    It's putting the right tool into the hands of the right person. A great photographer will have issues taking a great photo with a piece of junk but a lousy photographer will not start producing great images with a better camera.
    Edit:And you can hand a great photographer the best camera they are not familiar with and the photos will not be as good as easily as the one they are familiar with

  • @wyw3237
    @wyw3237 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. Camera matters because it has to suit the photographer’s work flow and creative needs, and motivates him to go out. But bokeh or pixel is not the reason you need a more expensive camera . Alex Webb does not rely on bohek, he would create equal impressive images with a apcs or point and shoot.

  • @azuki2919
    @azuki2919 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I do think its both I honestly think the weight is more on the photographer themselves like a 60/40 deal. And it definitely shines when you give a noob photographer a Canon R5 and give a pro photographer a canon m50. Yes features will be limited but a good photographer will know how to get creative within these limiations as GXAce always loves to say "Limitation breathes creativity" and I think its very true. And depending on what your doing gear really doesn't matter. If your doing personal photography for yourself then gear doesn't really matter as all cameras at the end of the day will take a picture of whatever you point it at. Now if your on the field doing actual work then gear certainly does matter. No one in their right mind would pull up to an wedding with an Iphone pro max and if you do... you better be a hell of a good photographer or be lucky the client isn't expecting much. On the filed thats when you ideally wanna go for those multi digit cameras as they get the job done and have suffiecent quality for the clients needs so in this case gear does matter along with the photographers skill. But when your doing personal photography it really doesnt as you choose your own approach to things

  • @TheSerialHobbyistGirl
    @TheSerialHobbyistGirl 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    None of the photographers who say "gear doesn't matter" are ever using a crappy point and shoot for their public work. It always translates to "gear doesn't matter for YOU, but for ME, well, nothing but the best and most expensive." It's disingenuous and hypocritical.
    Gear absolutely matters.

    I dont fancy myself a sharpness snob and will use CHEAP lenses sometimes with acceptable (for the use) results. But the example shots of the q2 vs the pro3 were noticeably different to me (around and before 6min). The q2 was much sharper on the bridge and watch photo, even at a quick glance. Overall, the main point of the video I heavily agree with.

  • @ditchstick

    Great photos come from great photographers. That’s what I always hear and I think it’s true. But “great photos” are defined differently by individuals. To me, story telling photos always win. And for that, I don’t need an advanced camera

    The best gear is the human brain. The more that is inside that brain the more you tap into gear. Yes gear matters but you don't need the best in the world but you need good gear to get the balling rolling.

  • @michaelhall2709

    The point, though, is that art actually thrives on limitations, and that there are always tradeoffs. A larger sensor will get you more bokeh with greater ease - but then why stop at full frame when medium format is available? Meanwhile, an APSC or micro four thirds camera will keep more of your image in focus at lower f-stops and with better image stabilization, both useful in landscape and wildlife photography. Sorry, no disrespect intended (I’m subscribed because I enjoy the channel), but from where I’m sitting this “Greatest Lie in Photography” header strikes me as overwrought clickbait, as opposed to a reasonable discussion of simply choosing the right tool for the job at hand.

    The immediate visual impact comes from:
    1. Composition (100% dependent on user).
    2. Focal length & quality of lens used (100% dependent on user)
    3. Extent and quality of editing (100% dependent on user).
    No one can look at an image and say “thats captured via a Canon and Canon lens”.
    Dont bluff yourselves.
