This is a wonderful video!! My loop connection just broke and I was looking for any way to not have to buy a new fly line! Thanks for the great tutorial!
Great tutorial! This is precisely the method I use. Several years ago I treated myself to a really nice rig from a company that was once a reseller of really nice gear, but they are more into clothes now. That rig was the first fly line I ever had in over 40 years with the welded loop. I thought it was great until the line sheathing cracked at the hinge point at the end of the double line for the loop. I complained to the company at the store where I bought the rig, only to be told by a very young (“green”?) clerk that my cast was defective. (I’m pretty sure I was casting tight loops before he was born.) I went home, cut the looped end and nail-knotted the but end of a tapered leader to my line as I had done for years. Now, given a choice, I will NOT buy a factory welded loop end line. I prefer the tried and true. Thanks for putting it out there!
I took the plunge and snipped off both welded loops on my brand new Scientific Anglers Redfish Warm fly line this weekend when setting up my new Saltwater outfit. I appreciate the how to videos!
Just getting started with fly fishing on the shores of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. Was practicing my casting and nearly snapped off the manufacturers loop on my fly line. Thank you so much for this. There was a time when my grandpa's best friend was one of my older brother in laws and he taught me that you don't want a big knot at the end of your fly line or coming off the mono before your leader because it would spook the fish. @@Madriveroutfitters interesting, curious as to why that is? I have never fly fished before, but got a "tin can" and a cheap fly rod. Is the initial weld a different line and not the fly line itself? Sorry for lots of questions and I appreciate your response a lot 👍 good short video, nice and to the point
Reo pened Energy should travel through your system in as straight a line as possible for best transfer of energy. Tying a knot in your line is also equivalent to attaching a split shot to it. Really good videos. Simple and to the point. I have a question for you about this video. In a previous video you were showing how to tie a perfection loop in the fly line if it doesn't have a welded loop. So in this video if your loop beaks, why wouldn't you just cut down behind the broken loop and just tie a perfection loop? Are you just showing another option, or a better option? I'm just starting to get into fly fishing, so I'm sure this is dumb question on my end.
Have never shown or recommended tying a perfection loop in the fly line. If you saw that, it wasn't from Mad River Outfitters for sure. Perfection loops are for leaders, not for fly lines. You should never tie a knot in/with your fly line under any circumstances. This is the much better option here. Not a dumb question and thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks for the reply. I was watching one of your videos, but I just misinterpreted what I was seeing. Seeing that there is a loop in the end of the fly line, I just assumed that when that loop breaks, you just tie another loop in the end of your fly line. I assumed wrong. Lol. What do you expect from a lifelong bass fishermen from the South.
@Bradley Smith You're right, there is a lot to learn. Just cut off that loop on your fly line and use a nail knot to connect a piece of monofilament to your fly line. Then just tie a loop in the end of that mono and you're good to go. It took me a couple of practice runs on the knot, but it's not that tough to do. Just do what He did in this video and you will be ready to go.
I fish in lakes that have moss in them and sometimes of the year lots of cotton what could i do because i like to keep my stuff from picking to much of it up
Nail knotting a knotless leader directly to your fly line is the best option. Ditch the loops and keep your knots to a minimum. That's about all you can do.
Please send this question directly to Brian at the shop via e-mail and he will get back to you there. He doesn’t check here but does monitor email every day. Thanks.
For the backing end, I just do the same process with a piece of backing making a wide loop that can pass thru the reel spool then connect the rest of actual backing line loop to loop.
Brian says it is a bit too stiff and you would need to step down in diameter compared to clear. Feel free to call or email him at the shop to discuss further. Thanks.
Hi Brian and Madriveroutfitters, Greetings from Sweden and thanks a million for all amazing content you've been doing over the years. I have a question regarding Maxima clear. Thanks the great video. Can I use Amnesia 20lb to build this and make the perfection loop extension for my 5wt fly line? I'm going to build the leaders your suggest on your "Build Perfect Nymph & Streamer Leaders" and it starts with 20lb Amnesia so I guessing I can? I would like to create the loop so that I can easily switch to the streamer leader that you suggest on that same video.
I'm confused. So if you use smaller leader material for a 4 wt than how do you start a leader with a formula higher than that? Dosent that disobey the law of energy transfer? Also if you do use a heavier say .019 for leader material than how do you properly tie this knot? Maybe I'm overthinking it.
@@Madriveroutfitters when you retie i saw that between the fly line and when u tide the maxima it was a nice roll. Like there's no hinges it smooth and nice roll between the fly and maxima. Happy new year to Mad River and to the staff !!!
A question for all us cheapskates. Could you just use the butt section of an old leader that has the right diameter? Especially if you were on the river and didn’t have anything with you. Could even keep the perfection loop that’s already on the leader if you wanted to.
I’m still looking for the “End of the Line" and the chart of recommended Maxima line diameters for loop tying per this video. I’m I not looking in the right places? I’m good at that.
I bought a beginner rod and reel combo with floating line installed, my question is can I tie a slow sinking line to the same type of leader that’s tied to my floating line? It’s a 6wt Martin,8 feet long. Any help is greatly appreciated.
You CAN attach sinking leaders like these: www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-4654-rio-freshwater-versi-leaders.aspx They would loop right on to the tip of your floating line. Hope that helps and always feel free to contact the shop with further questions.......614-451-0363 or admin@madriveroutfitters.com
What's the difference between the nail knot used here and the nail knot used to attach the fly line to the backup line? I've used a loop created from a piece of mono to pull the tag end through a nail knot while attaching the fly line to the backup. I noticed you didn't used that "loop" for this knot. Is there a major difference, can either method work for both applications? The final results of both knots look awfully similar. Thanks, A novice fly fisher
The final results are very similar. This one is more of a snell to be exact. You would not use that for the backing as you don't want to be pulling 100 + yards of backing through the knot. A standard nail knot works best for that. Feel free to contact the shop if any further questions.
Hi Brian, thanks a lot for your videos, can you tell me an equivalency for Maxima Clear line please ? Because I’m in France and I cannot find it in 20lb and 25lb
Hey Brian and all staff at Mad River Outfitters. So based on the above chart of matching stiffness and diameter of Maxima material with your fly line, does this work too for the starting end butt of "make your own leader"? I mean, I have a 2wt and 4wt fly lines and it cannot start with the same Maxima diameter eg: .015" (15lbs) for 4wt? Please advise. Thank you. - Muz @moose
I found another video on "Buiding Your Own Leader" and the suggested formula starts with Maxima (Chameleon) .022 (30lbs) and .017 (20lbs) for the butt section, then goes to Maxima (Ultragreen) .015 (15lbs) and .010 (8lbs) for the mid section, then continue with the tippet section accordingly. I just need to know what material and diameter to start making own leaders for my 2wt, 3wt and 4wt fly lines.

Quick question, when using this technique, how often do you have to replace the loop? Does it get damaged? I used this technique a while back and I kept replacing the loop after a 1 or 2 fishing trips and I managed to cut the front taper off my fly line over the course of the season.......which makes me think I did something wrong. I have a new fly line and the welded loop is beginning to crack so im wondering what is the correct way to use this technique? how often do I need to change the loop?
Shouldn't have to replace it often or if ever. No reason it should get damaged. Any further questions you can contact Brian directly through the shop and he'll be happy to help.
I believe that tying it straight on the fly line would really hurt the transfer of energy from line to leader. That would be my guess to why it is frowned upon
Hi Brian! Love your videos and had a decent start in fly fishing thanks to them. One question, may I use the butt of an old leader to do this fixing? I can't find where I am mono of the right number to match the fly line! Saludos desde España!
Thanks for checking with us. You'd need to know the diameter and stiffness of the material. Probably best to send Brian a message at the shop and he'll be happy to consult. He doesn't come around these parts often.
Don't see how you could. The blood knot is for attaching mono to mono and not flyline to mono. The loop is a perfection loop or a surgeons loop. No blood knot here.
Why you make this part so short? I think I do it too long maybe. I take underarm length at least usually. I think this transfers the energy better from the thicker part towards the thinner actual leader at the end. Am I totally mistaken here ?
Hi Brian, I'm not a flyfishing angler but love the videos anyway. One question please, wont connecting the leader via loop to loop (after doing what it shows in the video) mean that you're connecting mono to mono, creating a cutting connection as the monos pull against each other when fighting a fish? To clarify, in watching one of your other excellent tutorials, connecting a leader to a flyline via loop to loop connection, you say to go 'line through leader' rather than 'leader through line' as the latter creates a cutting action. I feel this might have the same outcome, am I incorrect?
@@Madriveroutfitters I agree totally that connections need to be done correctly no matter the materials used but that wasn't my point. My query involved the use of the mono to mono connection shown in the video, mono on mono will cut each other as you referenced in your 'connecting a leader to a flyline via loop to loop connection' tutorial. In my type of fishing (Pike fishing) we use it to our advantage when creating a 'weak link' to a weight.
Best would be .013" Maxima Clear which is the 12lb although depending on the line you may have to go down to .012" which is the 10lb. Just make sure you get a good bell curve and that the stiffness of the mono matches up with the fly line.
When on the river and need to apply a new leader this method is great. But if I am home and need to change a leader I take the fly line and dip the last half inch into nail polish removal. This allows for the fly line to be peeled off. You can then take the butt end of a leader and insert it into the fly line mesh. When you insert about an 8th of an inch you then put super glue on the connection. It's the best connection I have found.
Sounds like a very Bad Idea 😖 Super Glue is very brittle and would not last very long. You would be better off to just learn how to tie a few proper knots👍
You can certainly do that, but most folks prefer to utilize the "Loop to Loop" method. Saves having to tie a nail knot each time you want to change a leader. Nail knotting also cuts into the fly line and if you do it too many times, it can cut into the ever important taper. More to come on this though so stay tuned and thanks for watching.

Don’t do it. Do this. Any further questions please contact the shop directly and they will be happy to help.
@@Madriveroutfitters thank you. Have a good day!
Very nice video production ! Am I correct that I'd be winding INSIDE the big loop, and around the wire and fly line ?
That is correct John! Thanks for watching.
I like this loop much better than the factory welded loops.
Thanks for watching.
Oh man, I needed this so much! Thank you!
Very welcome. Please stay tuned.
I've just had another thought...
What about using a snell to whip a furled leader directly to the line? Or would you recommend snelling mono first?
We typically snell them right on. Brian has a few videos on the subject.
What mono do i use for a 10 weight carron spey mid belly?

Is it possible to use MAXIMA ULTRAGREEN 20lb 017” beginner here my loop broke not sure ? Thanks in advance
Please send this question directly to Brian at the shop via e-mail and he will get back to you there. He doesn’t check here but does monitor email every day. Thanks.
Do you also remove the the factory welded loop on sinking lines ?
Yes, we do. Especially on sinking lines.

What size mono would you recommend for a 2wt line?
Please send an e-mail to the shop and Brian should get back to you there. You can also call him as well. Thanks.
And I learn something once again. Thanks!
Appreciate you being here. Stay tuned.
Good stuff, will this technique work when attaching the line to the backing. Put another was will a mono loop work with a backing?
Rick Hudson No, not really good or needed for that end.
For the backing end, I just do the same process with a piece of backing making a wide loop that can pass thru the reel spool then connect the rest of actual backing line loop to loop.
Can this system be used in spinning reel?
Thanks for watching. You’d have to check with the folks at the shop though on that.
Interesting. Would this be useful from smaller weight forward setups; 4 wt or 5 wt?
Absolutely. Works great!
Any problems with using Maxima chameleon instead of clear? I have it in the same diameter. Thanks - great videos!
Brian says it is a bit too stiff and you would need to step down in diameter compared to clear. Feel free to call or email him at the shop to discuss further. Thanks.
Hi Brian and Madriveroutfitters,
Greetings from Sweden and thanks a million for all amazing content you've been doing over the years. I have a question regarding Maxima clear. I have been looking around for it in shops here in Sweden but haven't found it anywhere. Is there any similar line from any other manufacturer that you can recommend for this purpose?
Kind regards Johan
Thanks for watching. Please e-mail Brian directly at the shop and he'll be happy to help. admin@madriveroutfitters.com will get right to him. He doesn't monitor the comments here but does answer all e-mails.
Please send your questions over to Brian at the shop and he’ll get back to you there. Email is fine. Thanks.
Please contact Brian at the shop directly and he'll be happy to help with that. He will clear up the confusion. Thanks.
So why do this over the perfection loop in your other video. Just better transfer of energy when casting?
Please check with Brian directly through the shop and he’ll be happy help.
I enjoy your video's sooo much. And i learned sooo much. So bud u recommend when i get a new fly line to cut the tip off and retie it. Thx
Simon Ghantous This is a superior method if you need a loop.
@@Madriveroutfitters when you retie i saw that between the fly line and when u tide the maxima it was a nice roll. Like there's no hinges it smooth and nice roll between the fly and maxima.
Happy new year to Mad River and to the staff !!!
Simon Ghantous Exactly!!! Happy New Year to you as well.
Thanks for that. Would that knot work to tie the fly line to thew backing as well if there is no loop on my fly line? Thanks!
Yes, it can be used that way but a bit better to just whip a loop. He has a video on that too!
A question for all us cheapskates. Could you just use the butt section of an old leader that has the right diameter? Especially if you were on the river and didn’t have anything with you. Could even keep the perfection loop that’s already on the leader if you wanted to.
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly over to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help. E-mail is fine or you can call him.
Is his set-up better than a loop made with hollow braided mono?
Much……very much.
I’m still looking for the “End of the Line" and the chart of recommended Maxima line diameters for loop tying per this video. I’m I not looking in the right places? I’m good at that.
Contact Brian at the shop and he'll be able to help you out. Thanks.
I bought a beginner rod and reel combo with floating line installed, my question is can I tie a slow sinking line to the same type of leader that’s tied to my floating line? It’s a 6wt Martin,8 feet long. Any help is greatly appreciated.
You CAN attach sinking leaders like these:
www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-4654-rio-freshwater-versi-leaders.aspx
They would loop right on to the tip of your floating line.
Hope that helps and always feel free to contact the shop with further questions.......614-451-0363 or admin@madriveroutfitters.com
Do you have a book on knot tying that goes step to step with pictures. Thanks.

@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks
Can you just nail knot the leader directly to the line? Without looping?
Of course. Avoiding loops is always better but without them most people freak out.
Sean Mee Can obviously be done but very bad for casting as it messes with the taper of the line.
Thanks,
A novice fly fisher
The final results are very similar. This one is more of a snell to be exact. You would not use that for the backing as you don't want to be pulling 100 + yards of backing through the knot. A standard nail knot works best for that. Feel free to contact the shop if any further questions.
Could you add a sink tip to the fly line using this method?
Please send your questions directly to the shop and they will be happy to help. E-mail or give them a call. Thanks.
Hi Brian, thanks a lot for your videos, can you tell me an equivalency for Maxima Clear line please ? Because I’m in France and I cannot find it in 20lb and 25lb
Don't know brands but you'd need a stiff mono in .017" and .020".
Hallo there.
Try fluorocarbon line. It's even stiffer than normal monofilament and in the water it's invisible.
Does using Mono vs Fluoro matter?
Anthony James Coles no but why use fluoro? Not a necessary expense.
just what i had laying around from a salt water trip@@Madriveroutfitters
Could I use 20lb Maxima Ultragreen instead of Clear for a 5wt line? Thanks for all the helpful and entertaining content!
You can but it might change the diameter needed to match the tip of the line.
Contact Brian at the shop with specific questions and he can help.
Do you guys prefer this to a braided loop? Good video.
Absolutely....thus the video. Feel free to contact Brian at the shop if he can help further. Thanks.
I bought a fly line that did not have a loop. Instead I found these small loops made of wire that you insert into the core of the line. Any opinions.
Albert Levy Yes. There is a reason why he showed this method and not that.
THANK YOU, BRO.
Thanks for watching.

@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks! looking forward to it!
@@Madriveroutfitters Ok thanks!
Hi Brian! thanks for your videos great as always! What about tying a perfection loop on a fly line itself?
Thenks for watching. Please don't do that. Possibly the worst thing that you could ever do in the world of fly fishing.
I believe that tying it straight on the fly line would really hurt the transfer of energy from line to leader. That would be my guess to why it is frowned upon
I might try this.
It works well! Even if your loop isn't broken.
Is Maxima Chameleon OK for this in place of the clear?
Yes, just be sure to get the stiffness matched up to the fly line.
Fantastic video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
Is the loop able to handle polyleaders?
Sure.
Very useful , easier to do than using a well known knot tying tool.
Thanks for watching. Very easy to do!
Can you use a blood knot for this?
Don't see how you could. The blood knot is for attaching mono to mono and not flyline to mono. The loop is a perfection loop or a surgeons loop. No blood knot here.
Ok thank you!
For some reason I can't seem to get the knot tight enough. It keeps undoing. A little annoyed I thought the leader I bought had a loop.
Feel free to give the folks at the shop a call and they may be able to help?
Outstanding! Thank you
Thanks for being here and please stay tuned.
Would braided work as well? I am just starting out in fly fishing, so I was just curious!
Rhys Sands Not at all. Must be stiff mono.
Thx Bri
Thanks for watching.
Why you make this part so short? I think I do it too long maybe. I take underarm length at least usually. I think this transfers the energy better from the thicker part towards the thinner actual leader at the end.
Am I totally mistaken here ?
Please contact Brian directly with your questions and he'll be happy to help. E-mail him or call him at the shop.
Loop-to-loop connection must be done correctly no matter what the materials. Feel free to contact the shop directly if they can help further. Thanks.
Hello friend, nice tutorial videos you got, just to ask you, knots like FG knot and palomar are not good for fly fishing?
Send this question over to the shop e-mail at admin@madriveroutfitters.com. Brian or one of the crew will answer you there. Thanks.

Russell Lieser Thanks. Book is not out just yet but soon. Stay tuned.
Can you post the link to the chart on the blog? I can't seem to find it!
What weight line or lines are you trying to rig?
@@Madriveroutfitters 3 weight
Best would be .013" Maxima Clear which is the 12lb although depending on the line you may have to go down to .012" which is the 10lb. Just make sure you get a good bell curve and that the stiffness of the mono matches up with the fly line.
Super instruktag !!!!!!
Muchas gracias!
It's the best connection I have found.
jon stevens But not sustainable for repeated application. Not to mention, not practical for most as onstream protocol. Not recommended.
Sounds like a very Bad Idea 😖
Super Glue is very brittle and would not last very long.
You would be better off to just learn how to tie a few proper knots👍
How do you tie the fly on
Hey Niron, using a clinch knot: th-cam.com/video/8gz_w9IaV1A/w-d-xo.html check it out, we made a tutorial for that too!
Thank you for the video. What is the goop used for sealing the Fly Line after tying the looped line?
Can use Zap-a-gap, goop or aquaseal. Probably a few others out there too.
Didn't seal the tips of my lines. Need to do it right now before I forget.
The snell actually does that pretty well for you but doesn't hurt to be safe! Thanks for watching.
Why tie the perfection loop rather than nail knotting your leader every time?
You can certainly do that, but most folks prefer to utilize the "Loop to Loop" method. Saves having to tie a nail knot each time you want to change a leader. Nail knotting also cuts into the fly line and if you do it too many times, it can cut into the ever important taper. More to come on this though so stay tuned and thanks for watching.
I always called that tie a snell knot.
He does as well....th-cam.com/video/_I0u9URCbNM/w-d-xo.html

I use a toothpick or my hemostats to make a nail knot. Heck pass me a twig of a tree.
