    I am so happy to have found you. It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to live in Italy. Many scenarios have crossed my mind and finally at 56 years old I have realized that if I don’t do this now it will be too late and I will live with the regret. A little over a year ago I started teaching English online so I could work remotely. I am beginning my search and working out my plan. I do not want to bounce around too much though, I would like to find a place to call home. Enjoy your journey and thank you for letting us be a part of it.

      Hi Suzanne, We're very glad to have you following along with us. Thanks for your very kind comment, and good for you for taking steps to make your dreams come true. We love Italy, and our plan is to settle there in a few years when we have dual citizenship since some visas are very hard to get. In the meantime, we are excited to be experiencing more of what the world has to offer while we can do it. We will be in the Puglia region in early February (we've never seen that part of Italy yet). - Judy & Kevin

      I am wondering if a self-employed Visa may be a choice for me so maybe you could share something about that if you have not already.

      Hi Suzanne, We have enough knowledge about a self-employed visa for Italy to know that we are not qualified. ☹️ However, we recommend two Facebook groups, which have been pretty helpful for us: Expats in Italy has a ton of people with deep knowledge. Also, Samantha at How to Move to Italy. She has some great info and tips, including free webinars that might be more helpful to you. Good luck and keep us posted! Thanks, Claudia! It's definitely on our wish list. We are bummed that Croatia became a Schengen country in January, so now we have to balance it against everyplace else in Europe. There are a few countries like Albania and Bulgaria we are going to visit before they become Schengen and are harder to visit. It's also why we are in Cyprus now! Thank you for watching and for your very kind feedback. It means so much to us! -Judy

    I’m not sure this will be helpful, and you might have already done your research on Elective Residency Visas. Not sure if you applied for that visa, if it would go against you getting your visa you are currently working on. I don’t know about that, but I thought I’d let you know.. and you may already know so forgive me please, but the Elective residency Visa allows you to rent a home in Italy-not just purchase a home. A lease contract allows you to apply for the elective residency visa. If approved, you wouldn’t have to leave Italy every 90 days. It’s known as a “retirement visa” but you can either rent or purchase a home.
    I’m sure you both know way more about visas than I do. But thought I’d pass it on just in case.
    So happy for y’all. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m looking forward to more videos from you all!
    My husband and I are planning on coming to Italy/Sicily in April to look at some different regions and maybe even some properties for sale. I lived in Sicily for 3 years (in late 90’s) and totally fell in love with Italy! It’s been a long time..but I’m hoping it’s just as wonderful!
    Take care!

      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay, We are very jealous that you lived in Sicily for three years! Not having anything to compare it to, I would say it's still lovely. Sure there likely are changes in every evolving city, but we would 100% go back. We are aware of the rental visa, but unfortunately we still are in a situation where we need to make money, so we cannot avail ourselves of the pensioners visa, which is a bummer (in all respects). Thank you so much for watching and for your comment, which really helps with our channel. We have a couple more visits to Italy in the next six months, so stay tuned! -Judy & Kevin

    This was an interesting video thanks guys. Very brave what you’re doing.
    Regarding booking accommodation that has somewhere decent to use as a workstation, I’ve stumbled across a little trick. On my Airbnb search, I now tick the box requesting a private terrace or balcony. These units are generally really well appointed, and typically more spacious. The extra living area was handy for us because it helps to not be each others faces the entire time😂 We found quite a lot of these at good prices, all throughout Europe.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Dan, we don't restrict our searches to places with them, but we love a good terrace or balcony when we can get one. Not sure if you saw our video from Lecce that we booked because of its rooftop terrace, BUT it was too cold to use. We videotaped from it because by golly we wanted to use it! We had a similar experience in Assisi. Perhaps we should have looked more closely at the weather first! There also are places that technically have a balcony, but it's more for looking out than actually working, and in some cases it's too hot to use one.
      Your tip is good, and it's not a bad idea to do a first round search for places with those features and then remove the filter if those options are poorly rated, too high of prices, or not ideally located. Thanks for the suggestion! -Judy

    Thanx for the quick reply. I really like your informative videos…the IPhone apps, how to pack, vaccines for Egypt. Sometimes we worry about whether people want only to see our travels, but it's reassuring that the additional information we provide also is valuable. We hope that if we wish we knew about this information that others will want to know it as well. Ah, Maine. Yes, cold and snowy! We can so relate! It's good to hear that Globus is providing good tours. We prefer to plan and organize our own itineraries, but for people who don't want to do that, it's good to know that Globus provides excellent service. We appreciate you! -Judy

    We have travelled much of Continental Europe over the past 20 years taking as long as two and a half months. We have restricted our travels to the Schengen Zone because of the difficulties posed with visa's etc. Covid put a temporary stop th this activity but next year we plan to resume our travels with an eight week tour to Slovenia.
    Europe has such a lot to offer with differing cultures and sights, experience more of that before you move on to far flung places

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, we have a ton of European cities/countries we are very eager to explore. The Schengen limitations are encouraging us to broaden our sights (as is the cold weather in much of Europe right now!). Are there non-Schengen countries/cities we should prioritize?

    • @michaelcooke2214
      @michaelcooke2214 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FindingGinaMarie This time of year it is better to keep to the South, so Oslo, Norway is out until the Spring/Summer. This is the only non-Schengen country that we have visited. I am told that the North African coastal countries are worth seeing but I have no experience of any of them. I think that I should make it clear that we travel with a car+caravan so we take our home with us wherever we go, which is why we are restricted to Europe. So far in our travels we have visited18 different countries in Central and Western Europe, some of them like France we visit at least once most years. in 2023 we plan to travel in May and June by ferry from the Uk to Rotterdam across Holland, Germany, and Austria to Slovenia. Returning by way of Italy (Lake Garda is superb) Austria, Germany (Lake Constance/Bodensee) France, Belguim and Holland for the return ferry. If you want any suggestions for sights not to miss for any of these countries I will be glad to help

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, It's very cool that you are traveling by car/caravan. We are a bit squeamish about long travel by car for ourselves, but we can appreciate how much easier it makes when you aren't at the mercy of high Airbnb prices. Just to clarify for our viewers, Norway is in Schengen, even though it's not an EU country, so we are restricted from it when we have to leave the Schengen region. Oslo is a bit too expensive for us this summer, but we are tentatively planning to visit Haugesund. I was surprised at the prices for Amsterdam, but we plan to squeeze in a few days using some free Marriott points. We are planning to visit Cairo, Giza, Luxor, and hopefully Dusseldorf in the next few months. We also have Morocco on our wishlist for potentially later in the year. Stay tuned for our travel plans, which we have been working on tirelessly these last few weeks, and will include a few additional short stays in Italy. - Judy & Kevin

Although we aren't ready to settle down in Italy for several years, we have loved exploring parts of Italy while living as digital nomads. There are so many beautiful places to see. We'll be visiting Orvieta in the spring and introducing our daughter to several places throughout Italy in June. Later in the fall we've got plans to visit Summonte, which is where my grandfather was born and a few other cities before Christmas. Despite our desire for all the far-flung places in the world, Italy still draws our hearts! Thank you so much for tagging along on our travels! -Judy

    Thank you for your post…very helpful. My wife and I are looking to begin our “slow travel” experience in about 1 year from now. We are seasoned travelers (also from the Bay Area) but haven’t really had to deal with the questions, concerns, and experiences that come with extended stays. Our research has led us to many points to consider. The two that stand out for us are 1) how to deal with the Schengen requirements, and (2) how to manage health insurance. I would imagine that in consideration of the first, this will help guide you/us on “where next”. And while healthy, we are 69 and 70 yrs. old and feel a need to have something put in place that won’t cost an arm and leg. We would appreciate your thoughts…..and, of course, we don’t think you are crazy ….stay the course!

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Judy has more information that she'll add, but the Schengen requirements are fairly easy to handle. Here's my short video explaining it: th-cam.com/users/shorts3VhQ-jbMRAs?feature=share.
      We're using this calculator to track our days in Schengen: www.schengen90.app.
      Thank you for your support! We wish the best for your future. As long as you're healthy, age is just a number. - Kevin

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jeff, We are using travel health insurance through Cigna. We get nothing from this recommendation, but we had a great experience working with paul.marra@cigna.com (who we don't know personally). Cigna has an online tool that allows you to play with different variables such as deductibles, co-pays, and how much time you plan to spend in the US (you save a LOT if you only are in the US for 180 days per year). Paul can explain some of this better, but we are happy with the price, which doesn't break the bank for us. One thing to keep inn mind if you're open to it is that receiving healthcare out side of the US will likely be much cheaper than the cost of US treatment. Don't hesitate if you have additional questions.
      Kevin included the calculator we use and an explanation of how the 90/180 days roll, but if you're asking how you use that information, we'll have an upcoming video on that tied to geographical arbitrage. We just planned out the next 5-1/2 months and are eager to share what we're doing. Good luck as you get your ducks in a row in the year ahead. -Judy

      By the way, we have never felt unsafe in Naples or any other part of Italy!! We’ve been to Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, and other areas and not even walking very late at night did we feel unsafe! My love of Italy was ingrained in the 4 years of Italian I took in high school (so long ago that it’s incredible I still remember it!). On our first trip, I was so excited to practice my Italian, and everyone we met wanted to practice their English or Spanish!!!

Parenting is the hardest job on earth, hands down, but an enduring marriage takes work as well. We are so fortunate to have found each other so young so we try hard not to take things for granted. How exciting for you to be heading to Europe-the time will fly by! April is a good time to be there, too. Do you have a destination in mind yet and how long will you be traveling? Thank you for the blessing, it means a lot to us; we'll take every prayer you want to send our way! -Judy

    • @FindingGinaMarie

      We were timid at first in Naples and Palermo, but mostly because of what other people told us. We really thought they both were beautiful places and we've never had a worry in any other Italian city we've visited, either. So it sounds like you are well traveled! I mistakenly thought that perhaps your trip to Europe next April was your first time overseas.
      I'm jealous of your years of language learning. Our progress is coming along, but it is so s-l-o-w. We also were disappointed in Torino when everyone wanted to practice their English when we were trying to practice our Italian. Most often it was waitstaff who I think were too rushed to be patient, but there were a few others who didn't even want to try to communicate with us (we had some business to take care of there). People in the US aren't always patient with foreign tourists, so I don't blame Italy at all. It's just a bigger incentive to become more fluent! -Judy

Thankfully, we both trust our guts, believe that the universe is filled with goodness, and understand that the conventional way society tells people they're "supposed" to live is just one idea and that it's okay to carve your own path. Thank you for watching and for your kind comment! At this point, I don't think we know how to be anything but ourselves, but we will take your words to heart. We want to be as authentic as possible and also build a strong community here where we all can learn from each other! Everyone here has already given us so much great advice, and we are so appreciative! Please let us know good or bad how we are doing or what we can improve-we are open to it all, even when it may be hard to hear! -Judy

    For an Italian from Italy, "pizza and cappuccino" is an unpronounceable combination. Something barbaric, deserving the launching of an anathema. :-)

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Giorgio, so long as it's before 10am or 11am or noon, or whatever time Italy deems not acceptable to drink cappuccino (it varies by who you ask!), I say it's fair game. Sometimes something sweet-even though it's a traditional Italian breakfast-doesn't land well in our stomachs and something slightly more savory is a better fit. The pizzetti are in the same case in the bar as the cornet, and not once did anyone flinch providing them to us. They may have said something behind our backs, but we're okay with that. We truly do try to respect the culture of Italy as much as we possibly can, otherwise! Thank you for watching! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie Clearly joking, I don't freak out about that, especially after I saw many Japanese people drinking cappuccino while eating pasta. Clearly everyone does as they please :-)
      We, we have rules: usually, we don't combine savory with sweet. Unlike the Poles, for example, who eat meat and drink hot jam.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't quite sure about the joking part-Italians take their digestive health VERY seriously! Ironic that you mention the Poles, since we currently are in Krakow and their fixed price menu included a hot jam drink! I guess I don't think of cappuccino as particularly sweet though; the milk tends to curb the bitterness of the espresso, but unless you're adding sugar, I I think of it as savory-not that I personally have a problem combining sweet and savory, mind you! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie In Italy, we add sugar to the cappuccino (normally). So it's sweet.
      And we tend to eat sweet with sweet.
      That's an italian rule (but the rules are made in order to break them 🙂).

    • @FindingGinaMarie

      I definitely need sugar in my espresso! In Italy, they typically know how to pull a good shot, so we haven’t needed to add sugar to cappuccinos in Italy! -Judy
