  • In this video, I'll be discussing why you don't need any accessories for the Ricoh GR IIIx camera. The GR IIIx is a compact and powerful camera that has gained a loyal following among street photographers, thanks to its excellent image quality, fast autofocus, and versatile lens.
One of the biggest advantages of the GR IIIx is its compact size, which makes it easy to carry around and inconspicuous when shooting in public. Unlike larger cameras, the GR IIIx doesn't require a bulky camera bag or harness, which can make you stand out and draw unwanted attention.
Another advantage of the GR IIIx is its built-in lens, which has a fixed focal length of 28mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. This means that you don't need to invest in additional lenses or filters to achieve a wide range of shooting styles, from street photography to landscape and portrait photography.
The GR IIIx also has a number of built-in features that make it easy to customize your shooting experience, including customizable buttons, a tilting touchscreen display, and a built-in ND filter for shooting in bright sunlight. These features eliminate the need for external accessories that can add extra weight and complexity to your shooting process.
Overall, the Ricoh GR IIIx is a powerful and versatile camera that doesn't require any additional accessories to achieve great results. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a hobbyist, the GR IIIx is a camera that can help you take your photography to the next level.

Tempered glass as an accessory for any camera is #1 on my mind. Peace of mind from seeing or having permanent scratches on the LCD will be given. Especially considering that the Ricoh GR series is designed for pockets and those get filled with all kinds of dirt, like sand particles that can scratch the LCD is a bummer.

I use the GR IIIx daily for professional work. I’m a tour guide who takes photos of my clients outdoors, often in the shade. I have the Godox 350p flash mounted permanently on my camera. It’s perfect, although a little bit bigger than the camera. I carry it on me all day in something like a padded, weather/proof money belt around my waist. Perfect accessories, don’t need anything else!

@@GregCamera I think that's good in theory, but in practice I've hit into 2 big issues:
      1. The GR IIIx battery just doesn't last a full day of shooting for me. I guess I just take too many photos, but the last thing I want is for the camera to die on me at the end of long day during a decisive moment. For that reason, I have a habit of swapping batteries before the main one dies for peace of mind.
      2. I'm only human, and sometimes I forget to plug in my camera. Having multiple batteries means I don't have to miss a day of shooting when I'm on the go.
All that said, having multiple batteries necessitates an external charger since I don't have the time nor the diligence to be swapping out batteries when my GR is plugged in.

Only accessories I’ve purchased is an anti glare screen protector (obvious for scratches, using it in the sun, doesn’t collect fingerprints) and a stick on UV filter I had laying around. I find the battery life abysmal for long street shoots(just bought my used Ricoh GRiii Street Edition) so I bought a second battery (plus the $17 JJC charger) and am thinking to restore settings from what the previous user had as the battery just drains. I like the control with the thumbgrip but it dose tickle the upper thigh a bit in the pocket. Not much else needed if anything. Also shoot the Peak Design wrist strap because I had it...could be slimmer but I'm getting used to it. Definttely a sweet little camera.

I use a GRiii, and I keep the lens adaptor tube permanently attached with a filter on the end to keep dust out of the lens mechanism. It increases the bulk, but I've had such issues with internal dust on fixed-lens cameras that I'll take the hit.

The colored ring is something you buy after the original black ring mysteriously vanishes, which is almost sure to happen sooner or later. And they don't sell replacement rings in black. After I lost the original black ring from my GR II, I used it for a while without a ring, and it worked Just Fine, but it nagged at me. I finally bought a red ring for it, and it somehow improved my feelings toward the camera greatly, despite having no actual function as such.

If you don’t need a second battery you’re not out to shoot enough (case in point, if you don’t even need an SD card you’re definitely not out shooting enough to use a second battery). I’ve had days where I burned through 3 batteries.

This is a bit of a party pooper video 😅 i agree with some of your dislikes (thumb rest, hot shoe ovf, stiff wrist straps) but disagree with others.
    1. Spare battery & charger: when you are visiting a city or the countryside or whatever for a full day, it is not that obvious to charge your camera on the go. You need a cable, a charger, a wall outlet and time. If you stop for a bite or drinks somewhere and the facility gives you access to their wall outlet (does not happen that frequently at all), would you leave the camera charging in plain sight out of your reach (or even out of your view)? Also carrying your own cable and charger is infinitely more cumbersome than carrying a spare Ricoh battery. And who likes worrying all the time about shutting off camera, restricting chimping, avoiding connection to phone, etc, to make that small Ricoh battery last through the day and possibly the evening? I always carry 1 spare battery, sometimes 2, and travel with a mini JJC charger that can charge 3 Ricoh batteries simultaneously: I never have to leave my camera attached to an outlet unattended... Last point on this: the cover of the GRIII's USB-C port is fiddly and flimsy. It begs to tear off at some point. Also, I'd prefer frying a charger rather than the camera if I charge through a faulty cable or wall outlet charger. I only charge through the camera occasionnaly.
    2. Belt bag: I often use the small discreet Ricoh "dad bag" (as you call it) attached on my belt depending on my day's outfit to avoid bathing the GR in pocket lint. When I see how my phone charger port gets clogged with crap, I can only imagine what could reach the GR sensor and/or messn up with the lens extension mechanism. Of course I prefer using shirt, jacket or trouser pockets, but they need to be as lint free as humanly possible. Some fabrics (cotton, wool, etc) just shed fluff forever.
    3. SD Card: very nice to have 2Gb emergency storage on board, but that is not nearly enough to intentionally forego a card.

I get crazy when I eard about dust going into the sensor of this camera and have no way to get it out. 😢
